HUNDY MUNDYSCOTTISH BORDERS

HUNDY MUNDYnatural burial wood
Hundy Mundy Wood is a peaceful,
natural place; somewhere special to
take in the fine views that stretch
across the Scottish Borders and
spend time listening to the birdsong
in the surrounding woodland. It’s a
place of escape, awayaway from it all.

In the peace of wild things
The wood is part of the Mellerstain Estate and is rich in wildlife, history and heritage.
Hundy Mundy is in fact the name of the gothic folly that stands in a gap in the mature Scot’s pine and beech trees.
Our ‘natural lawn mowers’ will continue to graze the grass areas of the woodland to preserve the pastoral landscape.

Memorial stonesWe offer memorial rights to allow small, locally sourced memorial stones to be laid flat to the ground on the graves.
The ideal is a naturally-shaped river or field stone with your own design cut by hand by a local craftsman. To do so, please complete a memorial application form.
Hundy Mundy Wood will remain as a natural environment, the way you see it now; no benches, vases of flowers or mememtos which would change its special qualities.
Who you’ll meet thereOur custodians Mary and her husband, Colin, look after the burial ground and live nearby. Colin is also our gravedigger.
Mary would be happy to meet you there, to walk with you and talk about what works well. She will also be there on the day of the funeral to give any assistance.
...very peaceful, and appropriate as myhusband loved trees and the countryside. Colin and Mary could not have been kinder.

How it works
Natural burial is the most ecological funeral option, a thoughtful legacy for future generations. Being fully sustainable the woodland will remain as it is now, a landscape feature within real, farmed countryside.
Practicalities - We recommend stout footwear as the ground is uneven. A foldable chair is a good idea for those who find it difficult to stand. And remember, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong sort of clothes...
In advance• Visit the burial ground and spend
some time there getting to know it and deciding whether it’s right for you.
• Download the forms from our website, or phone us and we’ll send you an information pack.
• Pre-purcase at today’s rate. Spread costs over 10 or 20 months if you wish.
When planning a funeral• Complete an interment form to let us
know your plans for the day so that we can help you achieve your wishes.
• Make the arrangements yourself or your funeral director can do this for you.
• Book the date and time with us Burials can take place 10am-3pm and weekends are also available.
Finding the spot
When you visit you can use the location plan and measurements we send you to find the position of the grave, or we can flag the spot for you. We also provide GPS coordinates and a QR code so that you can use your smartphone to point you in the right direction.

More time and space
The wood is tranquil and private. An unhurried and gentle place to get away from it all.
Bring the dog, which has often been a constant companion and offers comfort at difficult times.
Afterwards Hundy Mundy is a place of escape; somewhere quiet to take one step at a time, close to wildlife, with your memories, throughout the seasons.
FlowersIn natural surroundings flower arrangements should not include any wire, plastics or oasis.
Perhaps include produce from the veg patch or a hand-tied bouquet from florists who source locally.
You may like to scatter single stems or petals into the grave as a tribute.
Make the day your own
The wood gives you the freedom to be yourselves completely. Whether planning a simple interment with few in attendance or a larger funeral event we will offer inspiration, support and guidance, so you can organise the day exactly as you’d like it.
“A day to remember despite the sad circumstances”
““
Your choice will help preserve the historic landscape for future generations and will contribute to the lifecycle of the earth; it will also have helped to make the experience of loss far gentler, more uniting and manageable for your family and loved ones.
