How could we let this happen to

our kids?

Page 2: Hunger

World hunger! Is there a way to end this struggle?

The leading cause of world hunger is poverty.

Because of this poverty it is hard for families in other

countries to be able to supply themselves and their

children with the food and nutrition that they need to

survive.

Did You Know?

Approximately 1.2 billion people suffer

from hunger.

Of the 9 million people that die every year

from hunger 5 million are children.

40 to 50 percent of food in the United

Kingdom is wasted when it could be given

to hungry Families.

A Fight against Hungry

World Hunger, Millions of people suffer from this

epidemic everyday! 925 million people are hungry in

the world today; of that number 16,000 children die a

day. That happens to be one child every Five seconds.

There is no reason for young children to die at such a

high rate, Most of the children don’t even live to see the

age of five because of lack of food and nutrition.

“A hungry man is not a free man.”- Adlai E. Stevenson

How much do you know about world hunger??

Did you know??

Every year 15

million children die

of hunger

For the price of one

missile, a school full

of hungry children

could eat lunch

every day for 5 years

Throughout the

1990's more than

100 million children

will die from illness

and starvation.

Those 100 million

deaths could be

prevented for the

price of ten Stealth

bombers, or what the

world spends on its

military in two days!

One in twelve people

worldwide is

malnourished,

including 160

million children

under the age of 5.

United Nations Food

and Agriculture

Every 3.6 seconds

someone dies of

hunger

About 183 million

children weigh less

than they should for

their age

One out of every

eight children under

the age of twelve in

the U.S. goes to bed

hungry every night.

Quotes:

"We know that a peaceful world cannot long exist,

one-third rich and two-thirds hungry.” Jimmy Carter

“There are genuinely sufficient resources in the

world to ensure that no one, nowhere, at no time,

should go hungry.” Ed Asner

Is hunger mostly prevalent in Afghanistan?

History:

Did you know?

History:

The modern state of Afghanistan was

founded by Ahmad Shah Durrani in

1747.

Excavations of prehistoric sites by

Louis Dupree and others suggest that

humans were living in what is now

Afghanistan at least 50,000 years ago,

and that farming communities of the

area were among the earliest in the

world.

Urban civilization may have begun as

early as 3000 BC

2nd

largest country to

have the child mortality

rate.

30 per cent of under five

year olds are affected by

diarrhea

More than half the

population living below

the poverty line

Today in the world there are

925 million hungry people in

the world. Twenty-five times

more people die in Afghanistan

due to hunger than

violence.(United Nations

Security Council.) They are

currently receiving the most

support in the military that

food and nutrition is not a

factor being addressed.

300,000 kids under the age of

five die every year due to

malnutrition.

Fatima

This is Fatima. She is 11

years old and in the third

grade. She loves school

enjoys her teacher. When

you talk to her she is very

shy and looks downward

when spoken to. Looking at

her you would never know

the constant struggle and

hunger in her eyes.

The continuous fight for

food and has gotten so bad

that Fatima’s father has

gotten her engaged to a

man for $300,000 Afghanis,

which is equivalent to

$6,300 US dollars. Her

mother, Sausan, just

recently had her seventh

child. Sausan says they

have no money and can’t

afford to feed all her

children, so selling Fatima

was the only way to help

her family. The only help

this family is getting are

some meals for the kids

from the World Vision for

Education Program.

Fatima’s dream is to be a

doctor. If her situation

doesn’t change she may

never get to see this

dream.

Soultions:

-The WFP are currently

collecting money from

countries all around the

world.

What should government be doing?

Understand hunger: to end something

you first must understand it and come to

a conclusion on how you got in that

predicament. To end hunger in America

everyone must understand exactly what

the problem is and understand what

ending hunger actually means and what

it does not.

Invest in public education: the

government needs to do more to

publicly display hunger as a problem.

Media campaign: the government could

gain a better understanding of hunger in

smaller communities to help increase the

awareness and the importance of

preventing hunger.

How do you prevent hunger for Americans?

Hunger is defined as the uneasy or painful sensation caused by the lack of

food. 1 in 6 Americans struggle with hunger, as well as children. Some

people are skipping meals and/or cutting back on the quantity of food

they obtain from stores. Overtime that could lead to malnutrition. There

are a lot of factors that contribute to hunger: the steadily rising cost of

living expenses, poverty, unemployment and really low wages, and access

to affordable food that’s nutritious. Not enough nutrition puts children at

a very high risk for sickness and weak immune systems. The immature

immune system of young children makes them defenseless to nutritional

dispossession. Which means, the ability to grow, learn, and fight

infections is harmfully affected.

Current situation:

No one deserves to be hungry. When you talk about hunger in America

you’re referring to the capability of people keeping plenty of food in their

household. More than 49 million Americans experience food insecurity;

they don’t know when or where they’ll get their next meal from. That

number includes almost 17 million children. The children fall behind

academically, physically, psychologically and within society, and

cognitively.

Case Study:

It’s Clay Holtzman third day of living

off $7 a day for all his food. The last

two nights he has went to bed still

hungry and with really bad headaches.

He has a week long budget of $35 and

he’s already spent $19.68. He’s been

receiving advice from people

following him on twitter suggesting

that he gets past the $7 a day mindset

and start shopping at a reliable grocery

store for the inexpensive items.
