EXIT FACILITIES: DOORS AND WINDOWS
Inspectors never fail to check the required emergency-egress window from a sleeping room. At least one window in each bedroom must be of
sufficient size to permit the occupants to escape a fire and also to allow a fully outfitted firefighter to
enter.
WINDOW CODES
Minimum width of opening: 20 in.
Minimum height of opening: 24 in.
Minimum net clear opening: 5.7 sq. ft. (5.0 sq. ft. for ground floor).
Maximum sill height above floor: 44 in.
MEASUREMENT REQUIREMENTS
Each dwelling unit, as a residence is referred to in the codes, must have a minimum of one door
that is at least 36” wide and 6’ 8” tall. Any hallway adjacent to that door must also be a
minimum of 36”.
DOORS
All the other door sizes may be determined by the architect.
Codes do not mandate that the front doors will be 36” wide; only that one exit door needs to have this dimension
