More than 5000 hectares destroyed. A day’s worth of flights cancelled from Newcastle Airport. Huge traffic delays and days of stress
and worry for firefighters and residents. And now we learn it was deliberately
started.Police also arrested a 14-year-old boy
after he started a grass fire at Rutherford on Sunday that thankfully was extinguished before getting out of control. As if our fire control services did not have enough to do.

My five-year-old daughter knows the difference between
right and wrong
W hen will they learn. The announcement from police that the Heatherbrae inferno was
deliberately lit is both infuriating and disappointing.
Police and fire authorities could not possibly do more to get the message out about the dangers of lighting fires and the substantial increases in penalties in recent years.
At the time of writing this column, police had arrested, but not charged an 11-year-old boy on suspicion of deliberately lighting the fire that destroyed more than 5,000 hectares at Heatherbrae and also a second blaze at Raymond Terrace.
This followed a 14-year-old boy being charged and refused bail after lighting a grass fire at Rutherford on Sunday.
There is always the argument that they are just kids and are not fully aware of the severity of their actions.
I would counter this by saying my five-year-old daughter knows the difference between right and wrong and that heading out into the bush with a lighter or box of matches is not going to end well for anyone.
Unfortunately, apart from relying
on the public’s common sense, there isn’t a great deal that can be done if somebody is determined to start a fire.
As mentioned earlier, the criminal penalties have been stiffened to the point where even the most keen arsonist would have to reconsider whether it is worth spending numerous years in jail for the thrill of seeing how much damage you can cause.
Continuing education in schools of the dangers and penalties will hopefully have some effect.

have been in touch to advise of a
free counselling service for anyone affected by the bushfires.
People can be affected by community emergencies in various ways – the anxiety of imminent danger; dealing with uncertainty; stress on relationships; the experience of loss; and supporting others, particularly children, through the crisis. The fatigue and worry of constant vigilance and concern for neighbours and family can take its toll. In times of crisis it’s important for people to remember to take care of themselves too.

Rachael Parker knows adversity better than most.In the past 20 years, the Lemon Tree Passage mum of two has
suffered from a stroke and been involved in three car accidents, leaving her as what is known as an ‘incomplete paraplegic’ and wheelchair bound.
Adding to Ms Parker’s woes is her financial situation, where some weeks she can barely afford food, and her dire need for a new wheelchair, as her current chair is being held together by cable ties.
“We’re not winning too many battles at the moment,” Ms Parker said. “It takes its toll, but you just keep going.” It’s not all bad news for Ms Parker though, with six-year-old assistance dog, Quinnie Mae, soon to take her final test so she is allowed public access, which means she can accompany Ms Parker in the same way a guide dog would. However, Ms Parker cannot afford to take Quinnie Mae for her test.
“It’s important to get this public access because without it, Rachael can’t even go to the shops,” the Director of Training for Assistance Dogs NSW, going by the moniker of Fudge, said.
Assistance Dogs NSW will be holding a picnic day this Saturday from 10:30am to 1pm at 81 Dog Hole Road, Stockrington. Money will be raised on the day to buy Ms Parker a new wheelchair. Please call 0402 496 639 if you are able to donate raffle items.

TANYA WILKSKOFM breakfast host / Email: [email protected] / Twitter @TanyaWilks / Facebook: David & Tanya KOFM1029
From the moment they emerged smack bang in the middle of the softball season when I was 11 years old, my breasts and I have
endured a rather rocky relationship. I was not the kind of girly-girl who’d
been wishin’ and a-hopin’ the boob fairy would leave a set under my pillow.
No, I was more the Tomboy type who dreaded this day and no wonder - I had the worst short stop season ever! Understandable given how incredibly difficult it becomes to catch a softball when your arms are permanently folded over to cover your chest.
Fast forward a number of years and B1 and B2 were now my new breast friends. Almost overnight, I found I actually kind of liked they way they looked in a bikini and so, apparently, did other people.
More years fly by and in that time they have embarrassed me greatly with the odd wardrobe malfunction, the most memorable being the day the right one popped out to say ‘howdy’ to the priest who was baptising my son.
But on the other hand, they have nourished my child, caught crumbs before they land in my lap and, with a bit of help, been a spectacular accessory to the odd outfit ...God bless the inventor of the Wonderbra.
The point is, my breasts, like yours, your mother’s, your daughter’s or your sister’s serve many-a-purpose and contribute much to our lives and to the
lives of our children and partners. They have their funny moments, their sexy times, their too big, too small, and just right times and all we have to do, apart from wear a correctly fitted bra to prevent them swinging around our knees, is to check them regularly.
October will be forever shaded pink in our calendars and right around the Hunter there have been some spectacular High Teas, fashion parades, bike rides, walks and runs with many more to come, highlighting the ongoing
research, treatment and awareness of breast cancer.
Like you, I have been touched by breast cancer. Whether its battling the disease, being claimed by the disease, conquering the disease or simply being there for the women in our lives going through it, we all have a story to tell.
The objective of breast cancer awareness month is to ensure every one of those stories has a happy ending which is why we need to continue to support the research into finding a cure.
In the meantime, be vigilant and keep checking yourself.
I am doing my little bit on Monday October 28 - Pink Ribbon Day with a Pink Lunch.
It’s completely free for our KOFM listeners and I’d love you to join me, so head to our website; kofm.com.au and tell me your story so I can invite you to the do.
In the meantime, a message for our younger readers coming through the ranks... always remember, mammogramming your boobs is far more important than instagramming them.
The Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day helps raises funds in support of the many thousands of women affected by breast and gynaecological cancers. The Cancer Council aims to minimise the threat of women’s cancers through successful prevention, best treatment, support and world-class cancer research.
There are lots of ways you can get involved with Pink Ribbon Day.

Linuwel School and Millers Forest Public School have been included in the latest phase of the rollout of the flashing lights across the state, which will see more than 100 extra schools with flashing school zone lights before the start of the 2014 school year.
Member for Maitland, Robyn Parker said installing flashing lights outside the schools would go far to improve the safety of students.
“School zone flashing lights alert drivers [that] they are entering a 40km/h school zone and to slow down, reducing the risk of a crash or the severity of a crash if it occurs.”
“Children can be unpredictable and do not always act safely around traffic.
“Put simply, flashing lights make the roads around our schools safer.”
The NSW school zone flashing lights program aims to have a set of flashing lights outside every school in the state by December 2015.
Flashing lights will be installed on Martins Wharf Road at Millers Forest and on Morpeth Road at East Maitland.

Fitzgibbon: Retainingagriculture
Hunter MP, Joel Fitzgibbon, has retained his agricultural portfolio and his seat on Labor’s frontbench, after being named
Shadow Minister for Agriculture.Newly-elected Labor leader, Bill
Shorten, announced the new shadow ministry on Friday.
Mr Fitzgibbon said he was happy to keep the portfolio.
“I am delighted Bill Shorten has provided me with the opportunity to continue in the agriculture portfolio,” he said in a statement. “During my time as Minister I was fortunate to establish very good working relationships with the key stakeholders and enjoyed the work and challenges immensely.”
Mr Fitzgibbon said he looked forward to continuing to address emerging global food security issues and the opportunity Australia has to meet growing global food demand in Asia, a phenomenon he calls the “dining boom.”
Mr Fitzgibbon has held the agriculture portfolio since July this year, when he served in Kevin Rudd’s ministry following the ousting of Julia Gillard.
Mr Fitzgibbon has been the Member for Hunter since 1996.
Mr Shorten’s opponent the Labor leadership, Anthony Albanese will remain as the spokesperson for infrastructure and transport.

A playgroup for children newly-diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is gathering momentum at the
Aspect Hunter School at Thornton.Supported and funded by the Greater
Charitable Foundation to the tune of $330,000 over three years, the playgroup began in March this year and is an extension to the Early Intervention Readiness Program (EIRP) which aims to strengthen your family’s ability to facilitate a smooth transition for children into early intervention services.
The program begins with an initial consultation, followed by a series of visits based on a family’s needs. Greater Charitable Foundation CEO Anne Long visited the school last week keen to lend a hand to playgroup staff.
“This is just great. It’s wonderful to see the kids enjoying themselves,” Ms Long said. “The targeted number of families has already been exceeded so the playgroup was designed as a place where families could come together to be assessed in groups sooner, before accessing individual services.
“To witness and be able to help the dedicated Autism Spectrum staff to support families through a daunting and difficult time is very rewarding,” she said.
Aspect Hunter School principal Liz Murray said one of the aim of the
program and the school in general was to prepare children to be able to attend mainstream schools.
As well as providing funding the Greater Charitable Foundation organises for Greater staff to volunteer in the work
of its charity partners. A total of 140 staff have volunteered more than 65 hours of support across nine partners. The Greater has also turned its Hamilton head office blue during this year’s and last year’s Autism Awareness months.
The Greater Charitable Foundation was is funded by the profits from the Greater Building Society and has already allocated $3 million to nine partners. It is currently assessing applications for another $1 million in funding for 2014.

Recently I have been undertaking daily foot patrols of the Maitland Mall and the Rutherford Shopping centre
precinct. These patrols have been in response to reports of anti-social behaviour, but also an endeavour to become more acquainted with the shopkeepers and public.
One of the issues that has come to the fore is the behaviour of bicycle riders in public. No doubt the vast majority of riders do the right thing, but there is an element who can do with a bit of education. An example was a 20-year-old man who I spoke to at Rutherford. This man was riding
contrary to notices stating no bikes allowed, he had no helmet and was weaving in and out of pedestrians. When I stopped the rider I was horrified to find that his bike was not fitted with any brakes, so if an elderly person had stepped into his path there was no stopping. Under the current Road Rules 2008 a rider of a bicycle on roads and road-related areas must wear an approved bicycle helmet securely fitted and fastened on their head. This applies to all cyclists, regardless of age, including children on bicycles with training wheels and any child being carried as a passenger on a bike or in a bicycle trailer.

A s we head into the warmer months, I’m sure we are all looking forward to jumping in our backyard pools (or our
neighbour’s!). Before doing that, though, I would
like to impress upon people the importance of adhering to the state’s new swimming pool legislation.
Under changes to the Swimming Pool Act 1992, pool owners are responsible for registering their spas and pools on the NSW state wide register. Registration is free, and can be completed in just a few minutes online at swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au or by completing a registration form at Council’s Customer Service
Centre. Pool owners are responsible for making sure their pools and spas are surrounded by a complying child resistant pool safety barrier (fence).
The deadline for pool registration is October 29 2013. The changes also mean that from 29 April 2014 all pool owners must obtain a swimming pool compliance certificate before they can sell or lease their home. The legislation also required Council to develop a Pool Inspection Program to make sure community members have registered their pools and are following the new rules. The draft is open for public comment available on maitlandyoursay.com.au or at the Council Administration Building.

3New Year’s: Alcohol ban not unanimous amongst council
A decision to ban alcohol at New Year’s Eve celebrations on the riverbank from 9:30pm has divided Maitland’s
councillors. The area is normally an alcohol-free
zone, however this will be suspended from 3pm on December 31, and reinstated after the 9pm family fireworks.
Last year the consumption of alcohol was permitted in the area for the extent of the evening’s celebrations.
Despite only two arrests amongst a 10,000 strong crowd, and a good report card from police at last year’s festivities, the cutback is being blamed on the misbehavior of underage drinkers.
“It seems to be quite a heavy-handed
response for the actions of 20 or so youths,” Councillor Loretta Baker said. “If that lot had been weeded out earlier we may not have had to respond like this.”
Councillor Philip Penfold agreed, adding that it was ‘ridiculous’ that alcohol would be permitted while children were around, but not after.
“We unanimously supported it last year, and I don’t see what the reason is to change it.
“I struggle to understand why we’re doing what we’re doing.”
Nonetheless, Council resolved to uphold the officer’s recommendation to reinstate the alcohol-free zone after 9:30, led in the motion by Councillor Peter Garnham.
“We’re showing good faith in allowing it to go that far without ruining it,” he said.
The proposal will now go on public exhibition for 28 days.

Lorn development: Closing loophole over wording
Maitland City Council is moving forward with the process to close the loophole in Maitland
Local Environment Plan which saw a controversial development be approved for Lorn.
On July 9 a development was approved for six dual occupancy homes to be constructed between Sharkeys Lane and Glenarvon Road which exploited this loophole. The land is zoned RU1 Primary Production, which does not allow dwellings to be constructed, however a flaw in the wording of the MLEP made a distinction between ‘dwelling’ and
‘dual occupancy’, inferring that dual occupancies can be considered by Council.
As the development application met all guidelines, Council said that they had no choice but to approve.
“We’re bound by the conditions of the new LEP, and we could be opening ourselves up to a lawsuit if we don’t support it,” Councillor Philip Penfold said at the time.
Council will now submit a planning proposal to the Department of Planning and Infrastructure for the Director-General to make arrangements to amend the LEP. The changes should take effect by May 2014.

3The Karate Councillor: Penfold’spassion helping men in time of need
Hitting, kicking, knee and elbow strikes are not actions you would normally associate
with helping people out, but this weekend that is exactly what they’ll do.
Maitland Town Hall will play host to the Hunter Valley Martial Arts Spectacular, which will see demonstrations of karate, jujitsu, tae kwon do, tai chi as well as
full contact sparring and board breaking in aid of the Hunter Valley Men’s Crisis Support.
Founded in 2011 by Councillor Philip Penfold, Hunter Valley Men’s Crisis Support aims to help out single men, as well as any children, in their time of need, by providing short-term housing, food, peer support and referral to professional services.
“It is important that fathers and other men in our community are also provided for in their greatest time of need,” Councillor Penfold said.
Cr Penfold’s involvement extends further, being a karate black belt himself who trained and taught for over 20 years at Hunter Valley Karate.
Although he has hung up his karategi when elected in 2008, the Karate Councillor will be compering the event.
Entry to the event is free, although a gold coin donation will be sought. Proceeds from raffles, auctions and the canteen will be donated. The Spectacular kicks off at 6:30 on Saturday October 26.

FROM THE VINEYARDSby TOM LOVELOCK
Tom Lovelock is assistant winemaker at Bimbadgen Winery
W ines such as Chardonnay, Shiraz or Sauvignon Blanc are instantly recognisable by name in almost any
household in Australia. They are varieties that can evoke memories of spicy oak or juicy plummy fruit that you can just about taste again if you take a moment.
However we may forget that once upon a time, these international superstar grape varieties were just a handful of vines in a much larger sea of genetic diversity. Somewhere along the line, our viticultural forefathers noticed that some of these vines happened to make a bottle (or barrel or earthen jar) of wine that was just that much more delicious than the rest. Cuttings of these vines would have been taken, propagated and spread amongst farmers.
Jump forward a couple of thousand years, and the first grapevine material began arriving in Australia. In some parts of the country the vines thrived and vineyards were established – the vineyards that gave birth to the Australian wine industry. These vines were, for the most part, varieties that we see on every bottle shop shelf, and after
a couple of hundred years some of them were producing Australia’s iconic wines: Penfold’s Grange and Henshke’s Hill of Grace (both made from Shiraz), Leeuwin Estate’s Art Series Chardonnay, and the Vat 1 Semillon from Tyrell’s.
So with such proven track records, surely every winegrower in the nation would be planting these varieties? But it’s not the case! Unsatisfied treading the beaten path, audacious winegrowers throughout Australia are re-pioneering the winemaking game, looking to lesser-known wine villages around the world and transplanting their ‘outlandish’ red and white grapes in our soils. The Hunter Valley is home to some of these wine pioneers, and we are starting to see ‘new’ names such as Vermentino, Fiano, Tempranillo and Sangiovese pop up in cellar doors.
These ‘alternative’ varieties often have bizarre spellings and tongue-twisting pronunciations, which can make them a little confronting to order in a restaurant or bar. Those who dare to try these emerging varieties may well find an exciting, sometimes unusual, and novel experience in a glass.
Don’t be afraid to tempt yourtastebuds with new varieties
STAYING HEALTHYby Elisha Stein
Elisha is a Registered Nurse and Midwife, with years of experience working in emergency departments, general wards, maternity and in the community.
It’s funny how smokers say it’s their choice to smoke and no one should be able to tell them what to do. Have they ever stopped and thought about
why they actually started smoking? There is an old quote that goes
something like: “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done, because they think they want to do it”.
Sounds to me like the cigarette companies have some pretty good leaders. And they are very good at finding followers.
It turns out smoking is even more deadly than previously thought. A study of 200,000 Australians shows the habit cuts 10 years off the average smoker’s life and is directly linked to two thirds of deaths in current smokers.
The four-year analysis of health records in the Sax Institute’s “45 and Up Study” shows even moderate smoking is a major killer.
“We all know that smoking is bad for your health. But until now we haven’t had direct large-scale evidence from Australia about just how bad it is,” says study leader Professor Emily Banks,
the scientific director of the “45 and Up Study”. The study, supported by the National Heart Foundation in collaboration with Cancer Council NSW, shows risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked per day.
The risk of death is doubled even among those smoking an average of 10 cigarettes a day, says study co-author Associate Professor Freddy Sitas from Cancer Council NSW.
Smoking is the largest single preventable cause of death in Australia and kills 15,000 people a year, says the Heart Foundation’s Dr Rob Grenfell, who worked on the study.
“There’s no safe level of smoking and there’s no such thing as social smoking. The link between smoking and lung cancer is clear.”
90 per cent of lung cancer cases are due to smoking. If no-one smoked, lung cancer would be a rare diagnosis – only 0.5 per cent of people who’ve never touched a cigarette develop lung cancer.
One in 10 moderate smokers and almost one in five heavy smokers (more than 15 cigarettes a day) will die of lung cancer.
Smoking even more deadlythan we thought

Your work will have taken onan investigative turn this weekso now is the time to catch up
on all the office gossip and suss out what is going on in the world of office politics. Get yourself around the water cooler ASAP!The full moon on the 18th is likely tomake you rather anxious especially ifyou feel a sense of betrayal from others, but be wary of over reacting until youhave all the facts at your disposal. Don’t go off too early!
One of your children willexperience a fresh start so itmay be a good time to organise
a date night or spend some quality time with that certain someone. Your friends may cause some issues for you by interfering in your personal affairs, because of the full moon coming up. It may cause some embarrassment for you but it will be only short term and forgotten after a week or two. Be sure to make yourpartner feel loved and supported.
One of your off spring may begoing through a rough timeand will need some extra
guidance; perhaps they need to be taught how to be a little more assertive with another child who is bullying them. The full moon on the 18th warns you to be careful of off ending those in authority. There’s also a strong feeling that someone will try to undermine you at work so watch your back. Always be on alert!
The full moon on the 18th willbe one of those days that youwish you had stayed in bed;
there will be road blocks all around you and a female relative or associate may make you boil with anger at her inconsiderate behaviour. Focus on your work life this month and be aware of your finances. This week is the ideal time for a talk with a loved one or business partner. It’s time to stop bottling things up andshare your thoughts and worries.
It’s full moon time andtherefore your emotionalresponses are going to be
intensified. If strong feelings arise, use them to clear the air rather than muddy the waters. Once you know where you stand, you can then act decisively and move forward in the direction that you have mapped out for yourself. Complications or delays are likely regarding any long distance journeys or communications so have a backup plan.
It’s high time you had a goodtalk to bring hidden resentments and frustrations
into the open. There is nothing wrong with being open and honest. Avoid travel onthe full moon on the 18th as delays of alltypes are likely. If you have a longdistance trip planned you’d be bestadvised to check with the airline to becertain that there has been no suddenchanges. Also be certain to keep an eyeon your car’s petrol gauge.
This week be very careful when standing up for what you believe in. You may put
yourself out for others, only to find that they are unappreciative of your sacrifices. Is it really worth feeling down aboutthough? The full moon on the 18th is likely to see you feeling somewhatvulnerable and you need to be careful of fatigue and depression. Just keep an eye on yourself, you need to look after yourself.
You will need to make extratime for rest as your workschedule will be bulging at the
seams. Don’t be too proud to talk over aproblem with a close friend or relative. The full moon on the 18th indicates thatyou may be feeling somewhat under theweather and the possibilities range frombruising a bone or a joint, to comingdown with a cold. Make sure you lookafter yourself as the last thing you needis to be out of action!
If you’ve been contemplatingapplying for a promotion orestablishing a new business
now is the ideal time to set the wheels in motion! A friend is likely to come to your rescue this week, bringing the solution to a tricky problem which has been plaguingyou for some time. The full moon on the18th indicates that a problem with achild or younger staff member is aboutto come to a head and you will need totake some decisive action.
This is the ideal time to plan atrip for later in the year and amale friend will come up with
some great ideas. If you’ve been prone toanxiety about your job security, you’relikely to hear some good news that willbe put your mind to rest. The full moonon the 18th indicates that there may bea problem at home or with a propertythat needs your immediate attention, perhaps something electrical. Openyour eyes and be alert!
There may be some good newsabout a joint financial matterthat puts both you and your
partner in a happy and contented frame of mind. Now is the ideal time to sign contracts and agreements or to make business deals. The full moon on the 18thindicates that a computer, car or mobilephone is likely to malfunction just asyou need it most! Maybe having a sparehandy wouldn’t be a bad ideaparticularly if it’s vital to you.
Mars is in your partnershiphouse indicating that you andyour lover will be putting
a great deal of extra energy into your relationship; this may range from taking up a sporting hobby together to some other kind of shared interest. Business partnerships will also benefit from this planetary aspect. The full moon on the 18th indicates that you need to be preparedfor unexpected expenses!

T he biggest changes we have seen in our 21 years of business is the large reduction in health food stores in the Hunter Valley.
When we opened the store in 1992 there were six health stores in Maitland alone, now there is just us with the next closest in Cessnock and Singleton.
This is very disheartening as you would think that as people become more aware of their health and the effects pharmaceutical medication can have, the public would be turning more and more to natural preventive medicine. Sadly the financial climate has taken its toll on the natural heath industry with many stores and wholesalers closing. The smaller stores just cannot compete with the large chemist warehouses and online discount stores.
As we witnessed store after store closing we realised we needed to change the way we think and offer new unique products and services. We decided to increase our existing range of natural crystals and giftware. Salt lamps are the gift to give this year. They are a unique, affordable gift for someone you don’t know what to get and they are beneficial to your health and breathing.
On our 21st birthday, 1st of November, we will celebrate in style with representatives from some of our favourite companies coming to promote their products and give away free samples,
These include Kosmea rosehip cosmetics and Herbs of Gold vitamins.
We have lots of new health snacks for you to sample and free iridology from our very own iridologist. We will also be officially launching our new website www.healthessentialsmaitland.com.au
There will be lots of birthday discounts and sales and of course it wouldn’t be a birthday without cake, balloons and face painting. Go in the draw to win a gift hamper full of natural goodies and you can win another hamper by liking us on Facebook.

Epithets like cinematic, expansive and epic are often bandied about by PR boffins and musical hyperbolists when describing the
sounds of the latest indie darlings. However, these words could not be more
apt when describing ‘Moving Pieces of the Sea’ – the sophomore album from Sydney-based musical adventurists The Crooked Fiddle Band.
With an inherent knack for dynamics, the band effortlessly traverse much musical territory on the album – with hints of prog, folk, world music and punk popping their heads up in the band’s highly original sound.
Drummer Joe Gould told TE that there was a palpable sense of relief now that the album was out and doing its thing.
“There was quite a long build up to this one as we recorded it back in February so it was great to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.
After writing the majority of the album in the Blue Mountains, Norway and Finland, the band headed to Chicago’s Electric Audio studios to record with legendary producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies, The Jesus Lizard) who helmed the band’s debut effort ‘Overgrown Tales’.
Gould said aside from his formidable credentials, Albini was the perfect choice for the band.
Stephen BiSSet
“He is quite a slight man and compared to his reputation, he is a very warm guy with a really sharp sense of humour,” Gould said.
“Also, his whole philosophy about making records is about making the band happy – which isn’t always the case with high profile producers, and he really knows how to make the songs breathe.
“While he is known for the heavy stuff
with his bands Big Black and Shellac, he is brilliant at creating light and shade which is what we were really going after.”
The album is also filled with fantastical imagery that is closely connected to nature and water and Gould said the choice of writing locales helped immensely.
“Yeah, we have always been influenced by nature when writing and when we were in Norway, we were in this little Hobbity
cottage with grass growing on the roof and while in Finland we were right near the fjords so we were always coming back to the water imagery and the big landscapes.”
You can catch the Crooked Fiddle Band in action when they kick off their ‘Moving Pieces of the Sea’ tour at the Small Ballroom, 139 Maitland Road, Mayfield on Friday, October 25 alongside Main Guy and the Other Guys.

Newcastle all-round entertainer Phil McKnight’s energetic solo show is an engaging affair that spans the genres of country, pop
and folk. The singer and songwriter’s powerful
vocals and dynamic guitar provide fantastic interpretations of music by artists such as The Beatles, Paul Kelly, The Violent Femmes, Steve Earle, Pearl
Jam, Dragon, Elton John and The Pogues. McKnight is a highly experienced
entertainer who has performed for more than thirty years in venues across Australia and overseas. You’ll be surprised by the huge sound that McKnight manages to get out of a guitar, harmonica, stompbox and one powerful voice box.
Catch Phil McKnight when he plays at the Family Hotel on Friday, October 25.

ctober 23, 2013Junior sport: Triathlete our latest champ
Newcastle’s Aaron Royle has become the city’s latest sporting champion by winning the ITU world under-23 triathlon grand
final in Auckland.Royle, a 22-year-old from Maryland,
outsprinted Spain’s Fernando Alarza and Great Britain’s Thomas Bishop in a thrilling finish to win the gold medal by just three seconds.
Royle posted a winning time of 1 hour 57.17 minutes.
The No.4 seed grabbed the lead with a sensational swim leg of 17.26 mins.
He completed the bike leg in 1.06:33 and the run in 31.39.
After his great success, Aaron said ”I’m over the moon. I hadn’t raced for about four weeks, but my training indicates I’m fitter than I’ve ever been and that translated into a good race.”
Royle said he was weighing up whether to compete at the Nepean Triathlon on October 28 but was ready for a month-long hiatus, during which time his most strenuous exercise would be a daily game of golf.
“For me personally, I think the only way I can keep going so long and training so hard is to have about four to six weeks off in October and November,” he said.
“We start training again around November 28 and our first major race isn’t until April, so we have plenty of time to get back into shape. The break helps you come back refreshed.”

thumbs up to east Maitland
East Maitland Bowling Club has staged the NSW Championships in the past week and this wonderful Hunter District Club has done a
magnificent job in hosting these prestigious Championships. Our best performers for the Hunter District were our Fours Champions, Ken Wells, Rohan Dennis, Michael Smith and Corey Parker as well as our Triples Champions Haydn Bojkowski, Wayne Lambourne and Eric Ryan who both reached the Quarter Final stage of these events. Congratulations to both of these teams on such a great effort.
During these NSW Championships the State Selectors announced the City and Country teams for the upcoming annual match in November. The Hunter District managed to have 2 players selected for NSW Country in Simon Mitchell and Michael Cronin. Congratulations to these 2 Bowlers on this honor and I’m sure with your previous experience at the elite level, you will both do our District proud. The most surprising omission in my eyes was the decision by the selectors to not be able to find a spot for Nathan Dawson. When you look at Nathan’s record this year in winning the Hunter District Singles and Pairs Championships, The Zone Champion of Club Champion Singles, Skippering Kurri to the Zone No 1 Pennant Flag as well as being
Runner-up in the Hunter District Triples and Fours Championships it is amazing that Nathan Dawson was not selected. This can only be described as a disappointing omission not only for Nathan but the Hunter District as well.
With the 2014 Pennant season fast approaching all clubs are reminded that your Nominations are due in with District Secretary Michelle by November 22nd. We encourage all Bowlers to get in and enjoy Pennants and have the honor of representing your club. This is the best way to experience playing at other clubs and meeting new people and forging life long friendships.
Hunter Bowlers are advised of the Special Management Meeting called to discuss and then put forward our opinion of the proposed Area Changes for our Bowling Zones. This meeting will be held at Maitland Park Bowling Club on November 11th at 6pm. Delegates from all Hunter Clubs are asked to attend as well as any interested Bowling members who wish to put forward their case. Under the current proposal The Hunter District as we know it will be decimated, this is not acceptable. Please make the time to attend and give your clubs opinion.
That’s all for this week, take care and enjoy your bowls.

Newcastle Jets coach Gary van Egmond is calling for greater effort and execution from his side after a 0-0 draw with Perth Glory at Hunter
Stadium on Sunday. The Jets remain the only team yet to score a
goal after two rounds of the A-League, much to the frustration of van Egmond.
“We created a number of opportunities and we didn’t take them unfortunately,” van Egmond said. “That is encouraging, but still I thought the football was poor, the way in which we played. “Too many times we didn’t look for the right solution. People looked nervous. Not just us, but also them. “It looked to me like a game both teams didn’t want to lose rather than a team wanting to win. “It was a warm day, but you have to have that stronger mentality. I’m not going to say all the players were in that boat, but there were a few in there that I thought didn’t put their hand up and have a real dig”.
This week, the Jets are off across the Tasman to play the Wellington Phoenix in Napier on Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix are also seeking their first win of the season after a 2-1 loss at home to the Brisbane Roar and a 1-1 draw with the Western Sydney Warriors in Parramatta on Sunday.
Sunday’s match gets underway at 3pm.
