Common Module – Representation in Texts Students will study a range of texts that represent the idea of ‘Power’. They will learn to identify and explain language, visual and film techniques and their effects on audiences. Students will learn about the effects of physical, mental and collective power and how it reflects the way we survive and exist. Core Text The Matrix – Film

Art of Writing Students will learn about how short stories are constructed and the elements of narrative structure. Students will learn how to identify and explain the complex language used to create characters, suspense, plot and meaning is made and evaluate various narratives and their effect on audiences.

Comparative Study: High Culture and Popular Culture Students will learn about the concept of culture within our world and how it is represented in a variety of texts. They will learn about transformation, appropriation and context in a variety of texts. Students will learn how texts are adaptable and can be transformed for different contexts.

Close Study of Shakespeare – Romeo and Juliet Students will learn the many ways Romeo and Juliet have affected audiences over time. They will learn how character is developed and the cultural context of Shakespeare’s time. Students will engage with the language of Shakespeare and develop their own thesis as to who is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.

Body Awareness Students learn a class work and perform in groups of three. The performance must demonstrate considerations of safe dance practice, body and movement skills and performance quality. Students will learn about safe dance practice and how to maintain a healthy body for dance through the appreciation components, including somatotypes, dietary and nutritional requirements, stretching, environmental factors, muscles and the causes, prevention and treatment of injury.

Pioneers of Modern Dance Students learn and perform a traditional ballet class, including barre, centre and progression work. Students will perform this as a class, working through each exercise throughout the term. Their final assessment will be a traditional class, performing each routine or sequence several times, demonstrating safe dance practice, body and movement skills, balletic technique and performance quality.

Composing with Intent As a solo or duo, students create and compose a dance work. This work must following the correct creative choreography development. It must be developed from inspiration and stimuli, have an intent, a motif and use meaningful manipulation of the elements of dance; space, time and dynamics. Students hand in a process diary that explains their compositional process. This is marked as a part of their assessment.

Dance Film Students explore dance film in class, and create their own work on film in small groups of 3-4 people. Students will explore movement including motif and sequencing. Students will also explore camera angles and shots, with editing techniques and choice of accompaniment to convey their intent. Each student will be assigned a role within their group, either composing, performing, or filming, with everyone developing the final product through editing.
