I can remember my grandfather teaching me lessons of integrity—say what you mean and mean what you say. Perhaps, however, the age of social networking has warped our notions integrity. How easy is it for us to reply “maybe” to all those Facebook events? We never really commit, but never completely blow the event off. Even further, how many times have we text or tweeted something that we were not bold enough to say in person?
In times like these where integrity and personal accountability are so much in question do we sprinkle back in some--dare I say it--traditional values. The best lesson I can remember learning is from my “tell it how it is” grandmother who says, “Don’t say it once if you can say it twice.” Perhaps I could change it a little to, “Don’t text or tweet it once, if you won’t say it twice.” Steps off soapbox.
Nothing further at this time,

#theSmag: Where are you from?Alsace: I am from Portsmouth, VA. I got to TX on vacation (lol). Now, it’s almost 7 years later. I’ve created a life here and haven’t gone back to live in VA since.
#theSmag: What style would you classify your music?Alsace: I would classify my music as hip-hop, experimental, crunk, dirty south, east coast, fun, lyrical, jazz, etc. I’m eclectic and I’m always trying to who I am through music while being an entertainment source to those who listen and watch.
#theSmag: Who would you say are your artistic inspirations?Alsace: My inspirations start with my Grandmother Gracie who would listen to Mahalia Jackson on cassette. Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, etc. My father and mother were big fans of 70s music so I love Al Green, Patti Labelle, Marvin Gaye, Tony Terry, Barry White, O’ Jays, Parliment. They say I have an old soul. Hip-hop-wise, I’m inspired by Kurtis Blow, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot, NAS, JAY-Z, and there are just so many I could name we would be here all day.
#theSmag: What do you feel is the tone of local hip-hop?Alsace: The tone of local hip hop in Dallas is forever changing, just when I thought there was no hope for the lyricists I stumbled upon the underground scene which has been here all the time, under my nose. Its a positive change and I believe its making way for both sides, the lyrical and the dance, which is awesome.
#theSmag: What is your take on the local hip-hop scene?Alsace: I love the scene, of course with everything in life you will never be completely satisified. But there are some excellent artists including myself that are really making a difference not just chasing dollars.
#theSmag: What do you feel your music adds to the local hip-hop scene?Alsace: My music lets you know that once again you do not have to conform to the norm to gain respect and deliver a message.
#theSmag: What do you do that is different?Alsace: I am sticking to my guns and staying true to me. Still relying on my background and realizing that music can change some-one’s attitude, their persception, and can change their life if you can be relatable and innovative.
#theSmag: Who are you listening to now?Alsace: Mostly underground stuff, but right now Marsha Marsha Marsha, Saigon, ADD+, Vicious Cycle, Que P da Prodigy, 7thirty, Rapsody, Ledisi, and but of course ME.
SEPTEMBER 2011 // #THESMAG 29JULY/AUGUST 2011 // #THESMAG 29
#theSmag: What is your inspiration for this project?Alsace: When I search for beats I’m usually everywhere. But
this title gave me direction of what I should be looking for. You will hear me rock out like a rockstar, and be soulful with
different melodies and harmonies and give a message or speak of love. Then my symphony will tell a tale of how
the different genres some how can be hip-hop etc.
#theSmag: When will you be in the studio?Alsace: Just left the studio with Diva Sol,
Huntertheone, Colby Savage, Slim of ADD+, and my homie Beezy. And will be back soon to clown
again and make some more inspiring music.
#theSmag: When can we expect this project to drop?Alsace: Coming to you
September 2011.

FULL FORCE TEESGraphic T’s are here in full force as staple for anyone’s wardbrode. Dressed up with some searsucker shorts and a blazer, or dressed down with some nice jeans and eye catching sneakers, graphic t’s are much more than a garment--they’re a statement.

PLANKING?Not quite, but his socks are cute. Check how one of our readers, Derek Moore, is rock-ing his season appro-priate pop of color at his ankles.
Color can be injected anywhere to take a regular outfit to the next level. Think of the possibilities: from socks, to belts, to watches. Any place is fair game.
WEAR COLORED BOTTOMS...because it’s cool.

No white after Labor Day. This faux pas is a habitualistic action, which we’ve passed down
through generations. Its look at as one of the ten commandments of fashion, even though
there are only a select few who actually follow it. “No white” is the big sister who fucked up
in school, but takes you to all the college parties with her, and as notorious as she may be,
her brother holds that same faux pas, just in a lesser know way.
No black after Memorial Day. How many have heard this rule and those who fol-
low are a near extinct group. Just like white, wear black during its supposed off season, is
becoming normal, even in trend. Memorial Day has passed and the sun is coming out full
force, so how is it possible to make such an attempt at grabbing black pieces
from your closet and not turning yourself into a walking micro-
wave. It’s actually not hard at all—or not as hard
as you may have thought.

No white after Labor Day. This faux pas is a habitualistic action, which we’ve passed down
through generations. Its look at as one of the ten commandments of fashion, even though
there are only a select few who actually follow it. “No white” is the big sister who fucked up

No black after Memorial Day. How many have heard this rule and those who fol-

Black is
such a classic look, and the 90’s brought for the idea
that when wearing black, you are dramatic and making
a statement, but you can wear black and be as fun and
playful as the summer. The man idea is to blend pieces
of black into your wardrobe, not to leave the house look-
ing like an Italian widow. I have a couple of black pieces
that I bough specifically for the summer. These pieces
are very light in weight and breathable, which brings me
to the first tip: Pick light, airy piece that can breathe.
Try adding your black into summer wardrobe with some destroyed denim
jeans or some easy shoes.

Voile is very chic and edgy fabric that is extremely
light and will allow you to breeze through the day like
the sun’s not even out. A nice voile skirt can be pair
with a loose top or a tank top for a quick on-the-run
outfit or for an evening look you can pair a dress with
a golden statement necklace or bracelet for a cool
night out. Lace is the queen of attention drawing and
when paired with the color black, you’re just asking
to be in the limelight while possessing sex appeal and
class. Lace top, tights, or lace jacket during the day
(Not all three together, of course) and a lace cock-
tail dress during the night. You can’t talk about light
and airy materials without Mother Chiffon. She and
her sheer breeze catching attributes make matching
with black easy and very fashionable. A black chiffon
blouse pair with a nice earthy chiffon floral print skirt
can give you that anti-summer bad girl appeal. You
can just as easily go with a leotard pair with a chiffon
skirt for an international look.
The second tip: Mix unusual and
graphic accessories and clothing with
your black. When someone has one a,
let’s say, all black outfit (Heaven forbid)
the initial idea is to add a pop of color. Well, that rou-
tine won’t be addressed here. Im not saying that you
shouldn’t because as many time as its been done, it
still a pretty and stylish way to work an outfit. Instead,
we’ll be tackling what you can mix in. For clothing,
if you want to be slightly conservative, you can wear
white for that timeless combo. A pair of white pants
and black lace top or a lean, subtle color top, possibly
cream or champagne colored; pair with black sheer
leggings can be the answer. Khaki is also an option
which I personally love.
A black top with a khaki skirt is a very summer look
along with high-waist khaki shorts and a black top.
Snake printed pieces mix well for an exotic take as
well. Accessorizing black pieces with natural pieces
are a strong look. Chunky wooden bracelets and bags
with wooden adornments give a sophisticated look.
Light colored woods work perfectly during the day,
and for evening looks dark and red colored woods are
the equivalent. Leather accessories give edge to an
otherwise basic outfit. Leather belts, bracelet, neck-
laces, and headbands can be paired with any outfit to
give just that touch of bad.
Lastly: Avoid long sleeves and super dark shades. I
think this is a very important idea to push at this
point. Long sleeves and high collars should be
condemned along with the person wearing. These
looks are all about wear black while maximizing
breathability and the latter work against it. Make
sure your tops are no sleeve or short. Mid sleeve is
workable as well. High collars should be avoided,
while low cut collars are lauded. Another important
tip to address is that if you want to wear things such as
jeans , or tees for a more laid back look , the shade of
these can make a world of differ-
ence in heat
intake. Lighter acidwash or grey stone-
wash jeans and shirts are surprisingly
cool in the summer. Ripped and de-
stroyed clothing are sort of a “cheat
code” for black in the summer as
the catch breezes and direct cool
air to “vital” spots.
This summer is all about be-
ing fun, and with these tips
and ideas, you can and a
little drama to your fun and
creative a bold and daring
personality.∎
