NCCC Convention in Omaha July 2016

Salute to Veterans There is no doubt about it. Members of the Cornhusker Corvette Club love a parade. That was evidenced by over 50 members in 36 cars who showed up on this unusually warm November morning.

Bellevue was the perfect place for a veteran’s parade because of the SAC air base nearby and the airmen in attendance. With unseasonably warm temperatures, many convertible tops were down and flags were displayed on the cars.

The parade route went through the heart of Downtown Bellevue. There was the usual group of parade entrants, but more American flags than we had seen since the 4th of July.

The men and women from Offutt reminded us that the veterans – past and present, continue to be a part of our country’s legacy.

The most rewarding part was the appreciation for the veterans.

After the parade, we gathered at Summer Kitchen for a delicious meal and their famous pastry and muffins.

It was a wonderful way to get together and enjoy good friends and food.

Small Town Treasures (Church Tour)

El Bee’s restaurant was the meeting place for an afternoon adventure to some special churches in southern Nebraska and northern Kansas. These are no ordinary churches, but works of art and architectural marvel. The weather was perfect for a trip to small town Americana at its best.

The route took us straight down Highway 50 through Tecumseh, and to our first stop in the small village of Steinauer. The history of this village is fascinating. Warnings to avoid "bloody Kansas" prompted the Steinauer brothers, Anton, Nicholas, and Joseph, to settle here in Pawnee County. They arrived in September 1856, only two years after the creation of Nebraska Territory. Famine and depression had forced them to leave their native Switzerland in 1852.

Although the brothers were among the first to claim land in this area, other immigrants of Swiss, German, Austrian and Bohemian descent soon settled nearby. Nebraska City became their chief social

and trading center. Indians, including the Oto, hunted and trapped in the region.

Turkey Creek and Linden were early popular designations for the site which became Steinauer post office in 1874. After the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railway reached Steinauer in 1887, the village grew steadily and incorporation followed in March 1893. With railroad development, St. Joseph, Missouri became the chief urban market for the agricultural products of Steinauer and the surrounding area.

By 1910, the village's peak population of 248 had been achieved. Over the years, the pronunciation of the name evolved to "Steener" though the original spelling has been retained. Today, Steinauer is a quiet community which remains rooted in the history and traditions of its pioneer settlers. The church in this small town is a haven for the entire surrounding area, and is truly a treasure.

The church is large enough to hold the entire village, and the structure is magnificent. Most of the church has been restored and is a work of art.

The highlight for many people was the restrooms, after too much coffee.

Next, it was on to the town of Table Rock. This is a quaint little town, which is showing the signs of declining population and store closings. The town has dropped from well over 800 to a current population of about 265. In spite of that, we found it to be a welcoming and fascinating place to visit. We were welcomed by Sharla Cerra, our guide from the Table Rock Historical Society. We started our tour at St. John’s Catholic Church. This small church is a land mark which does not hold regular services. From the outside, it looked like any other tiny town church.

The history of this little gem is really fascinating. Built in 1877, it is one of the oldest wooden churches in Nebraska. In 1952, the church was in need of updating, and a displaced Russian immigrant arrived in Table Rock and offered to paint a mural on the inside. He started on the mural and continued to paint for over 4 weeks straight. The result was stunning, and has been preserved by the Table Rock Historical Society. The last service was held there in 1968.

From there, it was off to the Old Opera House Museum. This place was full of antiques and artifacts (not including CCC members)..

Across Main Street was the Printing Museum, housing many old presses and typesetting machines.

After that, Sharla and her friends gave us an unexpected treat - a visit to their old time soda fountain.

Just north of Seneca, Kansas we found our last and most impressive treasure. The architecture looked like it was straight out of Eastern Europe. The day ended with a wonderful dinner with great friends.

Crusin’ to Brownville By Rod Penner

What could be better than a beautiful Sunday drive in early October? How about a long cruise to

beautiful Brownville, Nebraska? Founded in Nebraska Territory in 1854, Brownville offers visitors a variety of enlightening, engaging and enjoyable experiences in a remarkably beautiful and historic Village along the Mighty Missouri River. Brownville, a Preserve America Community and a United States National Register of Historic Places District is the perfect place to spend an unforgettable day or weekend.

It turned out to be a great day to visit the shops in this quaint little town and enjoy the delicious food at the Lyceum Café, which is the best restaurant in town (it is the only restaurant in town) followed by a stop at the Whiskey Creek Winery. A fun time was had by all!

The Fall Color Run 2015 - La Crosse, Wisconsin By Carolyn Edmundson

The 35th running of the “Fall Color Run” in La Crosse, WI, began for us by meeting up with Corvettes at Mallards on the St. Croix, in Bayport, MN, just outside Minneapolis. We had opportunity to meet and visit with several members from the host club, Suburban Corvettes of Minnesota. After checking in and having lunch the caravan of 62 Corvettes left the Bayport area in caravan and headed to La Crosse, WI. The weather was a bit overcast when we started but cleared as we traveled the route. In La

Crosse, we met up with other members from CCC. Together, we attended the Friday Night Hospitality function that had a Halloween theme, including costumes by some attendees, a great band with dancing, and of course good food. One of our couples joined in the costume fun.

Saturday morning arrived bright and sunny as the Corvettes gathered in Rowe Park, in Onalaska, WI. There were 197 Corvettes that gathered for the cruise. We had a police escort out of town to facilitate a smooth start to the cruise. It was a pretty drive with a generous sprinkling of color and scenery throughout the day. The weather was perfect for such an event. The morning drive was 83.6 miles and the afternoon cruise was about 69 miles. I wish I had all of the statistics on classes of cars and colors but can give you the highlights. There were 9 cars from CCC in the cruise. Many Midwestern states were represented in the cruise as well. Eighty two of the cars were red – the most popular color. The C5 class had the most cars – 87 of all classes.

The banquet on Saturday night had a fall Dinner theme. A silent auction and raffle were held to benefit their charity, the Spina Bifida Foundation. Kathy Brisbois was able to make an announcement about the 2016 National Convention, sharing events to look forward to and inviting all to attend. The Sunday morning brunch concluded the planned activities.

It was a fun event to attend and an opportunity to meet other Corvette enthusiasts and share stories and fellowship. It would be a great activity to attend again hopefully with even more CCC members joining in.

Summer Festival Remembrance By Allen H. Sohl

Summer Festival always seems to bring out a few of the senior Club members that played a key role in building CCC in years gone by. At Summer Festival 2015, I crossed paths with two of the “giants” from the 1990s: Dick Smith, and Brad Yerger.

Dick Smith is one of the few Huskers (maybe the only Husker) to have been a professional drag racer in a prior life. He was Service Manager at Jim Earp Chrysler-Plymouth when Palmer and I met him back in 1990. Dick and his wife, Sharon, consistently drove their ’69 Corvette to victory in Class IID at the Nebraska Motorplex drag strip near Scribner, NE. (And throughout the West and Southwest Regions for that matter.) Dick is no longer racing, but he and Ron Bockerman still build Corvette racing engines in Springfield, NE. Dick’s companion in the photo is his 9-year old

grandson, Alex. Alex is a Taekwando world champion!

Brad Yerger and his wife, Gloria, tore up the tracks in her dark blue 1966 widebody Stingray coupe. The car was beautifully prepared and maintained, and always attracted attention. After each autocross, Brad would strip off the protective body tape, wash the car, and enter it in the concours! Brad and Gloria ran hard for 17 years, but in 1993 the Stingray was demolished at the drag strip in Eddyville, IA in a spectacular accident in which Brad narrowly escaped serious injury. Brad played a major role in Cornhusker’s support for

the 1993 NCCC Convention in Topeka, KS. I still remember the stunning laser show that he designed and presented at the banquet. Brad has worked at US West (now CenturyLink) for 45 years. Gloria has retired after 30 years service. Today Brad and Gloria enjoy traveling in their C5 Z06 and visiting their children and grandchildren.

CCC Christmas Tree Decorating Contest

Kathy Brisbois

Decorate a tree (not more than two feet tall) and bring it to the December Club Meeting.

We will have a People’s Choice ballot for everyone attending the meeting. At the end of the meeting we will announce the winner.

I have contacted the Nebraska Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. They would be happy to receive a donation of trees for their residents. This is an opportunity to make the season a little brighter for someone that is not able to be at home for the holidays.

There are no rules except for the height of the trees. So use all that creative genius I know you all possess. Pick a theme for your tree and show it off at the December Meeting.

I can’t wait to see what you all dream up!

Here is the creative design from horse lovers, Gene and Kathy Gau at the “Lucky Duck Garage”.

Does this give you ideas?

Message from the President

2015 is rapidly coming to close. This is my favorite time of the year. Several of the events planned are fun to be a part of. Toys for Tots are

on the top of the list. I get to go toy shopping! There are amazing toys out there. Then there’s the Charity candy wrap program. CCC’ers are like Santa’s little helpers getting this project wrapped up.

About the time you read this, election of Officers will have taken place. Congratulations to those elected and a very special THANK YOU to those who served on the board for 2015.

It’s never over till it over, but Joe and Teresa Eller are in great shape to win the Overall National Points Championship. Great job guys! Gene and Kathy Gau as well as Gina Ogle will be receiving top honors too. What an accomplishment!

Have a great Holiday Season and Save the Wave, Jerry

Message from Your Governor

General Meeting Minutes October 15, 2015

Bel Air Banquet Room

Jerry Koraleski, President, welcomed everyone and led the club members in the Pledge of Allegiance. President Koraleski mentioned that Chet Leedom and Francie June, two members from South Sioux City, were in attendance and that they had arrived in a brand new ride! And I mean, brand new! It was good to see long-time member, Jerry Nabholz, (joined the club in 1992), with us for our meeting.

One of our newest members, Chris Tooker, is on fire sponsoring a number of members into CCC and NCCC. Several of the following people are sponsored by Chris: John and Patrice Tooker, Lonnie Glasshoff, Daniel Roan, Larry Longwell and Curtis Krumwied. One of Chris’s workout buddies, Todd Seamore, visited our club meeting to see what CCC is all about. The Sergeant of Arms didn’t have to throw anyone out of the meeting, so hopefully Todd was impressed and will be joining soon.

Jerry mentioned there were two records broken (one being 1E National record) at the Dave Hawk’s Memorial Drags by two of our new friends from Colorado!

Carolyn Horst accepted job of selling 50/50 tickets to support our Club Charity, the Nebraska Kidney Foundation. Thank you, Carolyn.

Kathy Gau read off the members who have birthdays this month and were attending our

meeting. A drawing for the birthday prize is held later in the meeting.

Jerry also recognized Terry Murkins from H&H Chevrolet being with us as a guest tonight.

Jan Gunderson, Secretary, received a motion to accept the September General meeting minutes as published in the newsletter from Sandy Swift and seconded by Kathy Brisbois.

Jan also announced that an absentee ballot for voting next month may be obtained by writing or emailing her.

As we all know, the Cornhusker Corvette Club is made of talented and purposeful people. As Secretary of the club, Jan was pleased to acknowledge that Johnny Lynn Williams, a CCC member since 2002, was the recipient of “Friend of Education” award on September 17. Johnny Lynn, a former Franklin Elementary School teacher in Council Bluffs was chosen for this award because of her significant contribution toward supporting environmental education in Pottawattamie County. As a side note, Johnny Lynn has provided recycling opportunities at all of the CCC low-speed auto-cross events.

Marie Manz, Membership Director was unable attend, but provided a report through Palmer Sohl. Although President Koraleski recognized the new members earlier in the meeting, Palmer had some interesting information about these folks. John and Patrice are the parents of Chris and live in Littleton, CO. Larry Long well is from Loveland, CO and set a drag record or two at the Dave Hawk’s Memorial Drag Race. I

Page 23: HUSKER NEWS N VIEWS · 2017. 2. 23. · El Bee’s restaurant was the meeting place for an afternoon adventure to some special churches in southern Nebraska and northern Kansas. These

23

believe that Larry Longwell has already acquired a nickname of “Silver Bullet”. And there was some information passed on by P.L. Pilger to the effect that Daniel Roan took out a car from a trailer that wasn’t complete yet, and used it to set a drag record at Kearney too. Let it be known that the Kearney drag was his first drag strip race that he had driven. Chris stood and talked about how he thinks that there will be more cars there next year from Corvette Connection out of Colorado once they hear what a top notch facility and event CCC holds at Kearney. We raised and clapped for these people.

.

Tim Ogle, Vice President and Webmaster, no report. Speaking of nicknames, Ray Kennedy stood and announced that Tim Ogle will now be known as “Tim the Timer”. Tim was humbled by the gesture and title that Ray bestowed upon him.

Tom Horeis, Treasurer, informed our club that we will support five families at Christmas time through the Kidney Foundation. Donations will be taken tonight and at the November meeting for these families.

Tom talked about the club’s revenues and expenses for the past month. Although Summer Festival was nearly a wash, Tom indicated that the high speed event was poorly attended. His thoughts on the reason were that the Warm-up for Convention that was held in August hurt the attendance over Labor Day weekend. The Dave Hawk’s Memorial Drags and low-speed auto cross fell short by $700 to $1,000 this year as well.

Tom has also set up the menu with Casio’s for the Toys for Tots dinner that will be held on

December 19. The prices for the meals range from $22 - $33.00 including tax, tip, tea and coffee (on the table). He quickly read off the 7 choices as follows: 11oz NY Steak, Filet, Prime Rib, Salmon, Haddock, Broiled Chicken Breast and Chicken Parmesan.

Governor, Jon Manz, Governor, no report.

Don Angeroth, Competition Director, caught our attention by announcing that there would be “Icekana’s on Lake Manawa on December 15. What a comedian! Actually, he said that he would expect that the 2016 schedule would be about the same as this year’s.

Pat Swift, Public Relations Director, “sprinted” to the front with his new knee (and his old knee too) and thanked all the people who had shown kindness through visits, food, calls and cards during his recovery. Pat didn’t have a report, but Tom Horeis recognized Pat for doing

Page 24: HUSKER NEWS N VIEWS · 2017. 2. 23. · El Bee’s restaurant was the meeting place for an afternoon adventure to some special churches in southern Nebraska and northern Kansas. These

24

such a good job this year in the position of Public Relations Director.

Jayne Sainz, and Kathy Cashell Co-Social Director, reported on the following socials:

Hay Rack Ride at Shady Lane, Chairman, Dave Ferguson

Bellevue Veterans’ Parade, Chairman, J.B. Benedict

Trip to Fairfield to see Opera House & Winery (and yes, Kathy Koraleski, there will be wine)

Kidney Foundation Candy (Sugar Free) Wrapping party at Clancy’s West

Brownsville Trip was a success

Bill Cashell, Editor, didn’t have a report except he was very glad that Kathy Koraleski will get her glass of wine on the trip to Fairfield. He gave kudos to Jan for the poem he published in the newsletter this month that was meant

to commemorate Veteran’s Day next month. Bill also asked that new members stay for a quick picture for the newsletter.

Tim Ogle, Webmaster, no report.

JB Benedict, Points Chairman- was absent. Jerry reported that CCC is 26,000 points ahead of the #2 club in NCCC, but JB asked for a correction to these minutes stating that CCC is in first place in NCCC with 27,000, about 16,000 points ahead of second place.

George Horst, Member at Large-no report

Perry Dawes, Member at Large-.no report

Jerry Koraleski reminded members that the Members at Large are to handle any issues, problems or complaints.

Gene Gau 2016 Convention Chairman; who was wearing a pair of dark glasses and a new

“Lion” shirt furnished by Jayne Sainz from her recent trip to Cayman Island, informed the club that each Chairman and Co-Chairman and

those who assist these people will get a Blue convention shirt, trimmed in Red and White, free.

Have you seen the recent picture of Gene Gau’s feet that’s floating around? All the outstanding plans and what CCC is going to provide for a great time in the Omaha area has knocked his socks off and the 2016 Convention is going to Knock Your Socks Off Too! To remember the greatest 2016 NCCC Convention, Gene’s had some dash plaques made and he indicated that

Page 25: HUSKER NEWS N VIEWS · 2017. 2. 23. · El Bee’s restaurant was the meeting place for an afternoon adventure to some special churches in southern Nebraska and northern Kansas. These

25

the lovely picture of his feet will appear on the placemats. (That ought to trim down the food costs!) BUT, there is one lady who absolutely thinks the “feet” are appalling so “she wins”! says Gene. Gene is going to tone it down with the feet. (Thank you, Sandy Swift!) Seems as though there’s been some fun planning this event!

Kevin Reit, Chairman of Door Prizes for the Convention came to the front and said he had a few donations and would invite anyone who had a

resource for prizes to gather them and bring them to him at the General Meetings. Any $30,000, $40,000 or $50,000 prizes would be welcomed—that Kevin Reit has always been such a joker. But, seriously, if your company would like to contribute, or if any individuals would like to contribute, that would really be great.

Ervin Gunderson, Summer Festival Chairman, No report.

Old Business- Kathy Brisbois came to the front to talk about the Christmas tree contest that will be held at the December meeting. The

trees must be 2 feet or less and those members who attend will be the judges. Most craft shops have their trees out now. The neat

thing about these trees is that they will be donated to the Nebraska Skilled Center at 72nd & Center in Omaha after we’ve had our fun with them.

Monica Baxter reported that the Mary Our Queen Car show was a success with 25 cars from our club. She had hoped for 10 cars!

Ray Kennedy won “Kid’s Choice”, and Jodi and

Sam DePetro won the” Adult Choice”. Congratulations!

Sharon Renshaw also hoped that 10 cars would turn out for the “Backpack Program at Yutan” car show to make $300, but, as this secretary predicted there were more cars than she

thought would show --39 cars. With other donations included from the club, CCC was able to give this program $625.00!

Page 26: HUSKER NEWS N VIEWS · 2017. 2. 23. · El Bee’s restaurant was the meeting place for an afternoon adventure to some special churches in southern Nebraska and northern Kansas. These

26

How’s that for CCC coming through for these kids? That is the CCC way! Sharon read a very nice Thank you note from Craig Witty who heads this charity.

Terry Murkins from H&H Chevrolet said that the Lincoln All Corvette show had 250 Vettes enter the event a few weeks ago which was a record. Coverage of that show will be published in the H&H Chevrolet newsletter that goes out to 3,600 Corvette owners. Terry also mentioned having several special Corvettes for sale.

Bill Anderson led a discussion on the availability of the 2015 Snell Helmets, and President Koraleski directed Bill to address this situation with the Competition Director.

New Business- It should be noted that Chris Tooker’s reaction time at the Kearney drags was .0001!

At this time of the meeting, President Koraleski, announced that nominations for the Board of Directors for 2016 would begin. Those nominated and accepting are:

President Jerry Koraleski Vice President Kathy Brisbois Ray Kennedy Secretary Jannette Gunderson Treasurer Tom Horeis Governor Jon Manz Membership Director Marie Manz Competition Director Don Angeroth Public Relations Pat Swift

Social Director By Committee headed by Jayne Sainz and Kathy Cashell

Newsletter Bill Cashell Summer Festival Chair Dave Ferguson Members at Large #1 Perry Dawes Teresa Eller Members at Large #2 Bob Edmundson Chris Tooker Voting will take place at next month’s General Meeting according to the Club’s By-laws. Bill (P.L.) Pilger was drawn as the birthday winner and was given first choice of the gifts from the table. FYI: P.L. has been a member of CCC since 1979! Sandy Swift was not only the winner of the debate between her and Gene, but she was holding the winning ticket (red #4365310) for the 50/50 pot which was $116.

Motion to close was made by Randy Williams and seconded by David (Spinner) James.

Respectfully Submitted,

Jannette Gunderson
