Dear Tuscarora Families, The winter holidays are almost upon us. We have truly built a wonderful school community that supports student learning and success. Parent attendance on our November conference day demonstrates the home/school partnership that has been created and featured here at Tuscarora. For that, I share a heartfelt, Thank you!”. Students received first quarter report cards last month. We encourage parents to contact the classroom teacher and/or school counselor with your questions or concerns. We also encourage parents to contact the school if access to PHOENIX is still needed. Our after school remediation program, SLED, will begin soon for this school year. It meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:15-6pm in our library. Teachers are available to assist students and an activity bus is available for student transportation. I will notify you when SLED begins. This fall and winter has seen outstanding accomplishments by our students! Our GirlsCross Country team has won its fourth state championship in five years. The drama department just completed a rousing rendition of the play, Putnam County 25th annual Spelling Bee”, and we are looking forward to our choral, band, and orchestra, concerts this month. We also welcome our winter sport events and we extend an invitation to you to come out and support our students as they compete. Check our calendar for the dates of these activities. DECA is currently having their annual Angel Treedrive, which can be found in the main foyer of the school. Our teachers are taking part in helping our Head Start classroom students have a Happy Holiday through sponsoring stu- dents in that classroom. You are always invited to help our students by sending canned food items to Tuscarora for the shelves of the Loudoun Food Coalition, sponsored by our FCCLA. Please email, call or stop in at any time to discuss any concerns that you have. Thank you in advance for your support. Dear Tuscarora Families,

The winter holidays are almost upon us. We have truly built a wonderful school community that supports student

learning and success. Parent attendance on our November conference day demonstrates the home/school partnership

that has been created and featured here at Tuscarora. For that, I share a heartfelt, “Thank you!”.

Students received first quarter report cards last month. We encourage parents to contact the classroom teacher and/or

school counselor with your questions or concerns. We also encourage parents to contact the school if access to

PHOENIX is still needed. Our after school remediation program, SLED, will begin soon for this school year. It meets

every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:15-6pm in our library. Teachers are available to assist students and an activity bus

is available for student transportation. I will notify you when SLED begins.

This fall and winter has seen outstanding accomplishments by our students! Our Girls’ Cross Country team has won its

fourth state championship in five years. The drama department just completed a rousing rendition of the play,

“Putnam County 25th annual Spelling Bee”, and we are looking forward to our choral, band, and orchestra, concerts

this month. We also welcome our winter sport events and we extend an invitation to you to come out and support our

students as they compete. Check our calendar for the dates of these activities.

DECA is currently having their annual “Angel Tree” drive, which can be found in the main foyer of the school. Our

teachers are taking part in helping our Head Start classroom students have a Happy Holiday through sponsoring stu-

dents in that classroom. You are always invited to help our students by sending canned food items to Tuscarora for the

shelves of the Loudoun Food Coalition, sponsored by our FCCLA.

Please email, call or stop in at any time to discuss any concerns that you have. Thank you in advance for your support.

January 9th

2019

The AET (Academy of Engineering and Technology) and MATA (Monroe Advanced Technology Academy) will be hosting Tuscarora HS for the Shadowing experience. This year students will get a tour of both programs, AET and MATA. This

trip is open to all current 9-11th graders. Please stop by the Career Center for permission forms and flyers. All permis-

sion forms are due by Thursday December 20th.

PSAT RESULTS

From December 10-,12 2018, students who provided their email address on their PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet will receive an email reminder from College Board explaining where and how to view their scores. Students can set up a free College Board account at any time.

Students who took the October PSAT/NMSQT need to create and connect their College Board and Khan Academy ac-counts. That way, when they get their PSAT/NMSQT scores on December 13, they can log in to Khan Academy and get a personalized SAT practice plan.

The EL Department introduced it’s Newcomer EL students to Thanksgiving in the United States. Background information was introduced to the student’s along with the cultural as-pects of the celebration. As a culmination of the Thanksgiving unit the students met in the cafeteria where they worked in groups to make pumpkin pies from scratch!! The multi-content unit was incorporated to enlighten the students of all the different content areas used in everyday life.

Virtual Loudoun EL Teacher Traci Scanlon Crowe met with Tuscarora EL Teachers to intro-duce them to the various ways available to assist the EL student’s in graduating on time. Teachers will be recommending students to speak with Mrs. Scanlon Crowe to discuss expec-tations and to determine if the student is a candidate for Virtual Loudoun.

As you can see the EL Department has been extremely busy providing positive opportunities for our EL students to succeed and grow within and outside of the Tuscarora family! We look forward to working with other departments to promote our students even further.

Happy Winter, Huskies! As cold weather sets in, stock up on reading materials for those long winter nights! Check out our display of new books in the library. Be sure to return your overdue books and clear your record first, then come by the library before the winter break and check out some new titles! All students who clear their record of overdues before the break will receive a sweet treat! Library Activities November was Picture Book Month! Did you know that picture books are not just for kids? Pic-ture Book Month is an international literacy initiative that has been celebrating the print picture book during the month of November since 2009. THS library shared picture books and connected them with curriculum-centered maker kits. A favor-ite was a paired reading of Twenty-One Elephants and Still Standing by April Jones Prince and/or Twenty-One Elephants by Phil Bidner. Each tells the story of the “testing” of the safety and sound-ness of the Brooklyn Bridge after it was built by marching 21 of P.T. Barnum’s elephants across it. Students were invited to read the stories and challenged to build their own structures using Keva Blocks. Some of their structures are pictured below!

1Book 1Community Author Event is December 15 at THS!!!

Sponsored by the Loudoun County Public Library, 1book 1community is a countywide reading pro-gram that promotes community dialogue and understanding through the shared experience of read-ing and discussing the same book. This year’s 1Book 1Community title is All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. Check out the display in the library and make sure to come to Tuscarora to meet the authors on Saturday, Wednesday, December 15 at 2pm. Pick up your free copy of the book in the school library or any public library branch and join in on the discussion. Genrefication Do you like mysteries? Are you a fan of fantasy? If so, you know that finding the right book on the library shelves can sometimes be difficult, since our organization system goes by authors’ names and not by genre. To facilitate browsing, we have instituted a color-coded system that will help you identify books by their genre. Look for the chart with the colored dots and find the corresponding color on the spines of the books of your favorite genre! Happy browsing! Circulation statistics Our library is well used by our students! In October we checked out 491 items to our students and processed many inter-library loans from other schools. Way to read, Huskies!
