Instructor, Kansas State University – graduate level courses

PLAN803: Community Research Methods (Fall 2010-17) – provides regional and community planning students with basic research design and data collection skills applicable to planning. PLAN721: Infrastructure Planning and Finance (Spring 2011 & 2012) – focuses on major topics related to infrastructure planning and financing: the relationship between growth management and infrastructure, the process for determining infrastructure needs, an overview of major infrastructure systems, a discussion of capital budgeting, and a summary of financing techniques for infrastructure projects. PLAN720: Infrastructure and Plan Implementation (Fall 2012-17) [co-taught with John Keller 2012 and 2013] - an examination of infrastructure systems, the transportation process, land-use, and development standards; consideration of policy options and strategies; review of financing options and regulatory requirements associated with the various infrastructure elements. The course also reviews social and other issues that affect and are affected by infrastructure related decisions. In addition, I have supervised independent studies for individuals and groups.


Instructor, Kansas State University – undergraduate level courses PLAN010-A: Planning Field Trip (Spring 2012-14; 2016 & 2017) – the RCP component of the LARCP Spring Trip. Lorn Clement leads the LA portion. On this trip, we visit project sites and professional offices relevant to the students’ studies. PLAN415: World Cities (Spring 2013-17) – This course is about cities and how and why they are important. It is for students from a variety of disciplines, introducing them to some of the major urban areas in the world, how and why they developed, what makes them unique, and what it might be like to live there. This course gives students a way of thinking about cities in a global context that highlights both their differences and their similarities. Through lectures, text, and other multi-media formats, students explore some of the main opportunities and challenges facing the inhabitants of large cities in today’s world. PLAN699-B: Collective Decisions (Spring 2012-14; 2017) – provides an introduction to planning as a collective decision-making tool; examines how planners work within a decision-making environment to move from planning concepts to implementing plans. PLAN699: Planning in POP Culture (Spring Intersession 2011-13; Winter Intersession 2014-17) [co-taught with LaBarbara James Wigfall 2011-17, including Kathrine Nesse 2013-16] - an exploratory educational adventure of regional and community planning issues through the cultural media of song, literature, visual art, and film. CDPLN715: Principles & Strategies of Community Change (Fall 2014 & 2016) – this course analyzes principles and practices of community change and development, beginning with definitions of community and the contribution of community capitals to community well-being. CDPLN710: Community Analysis (Spring 2014 & 2016) – this course provides basic research and evaluation design skills applicable to the practice, including the link between theory, research, and policy; conceptualization and operationalization of the research problem; study designs; ethics; sampling; data sources and collection techniques; and the logic of data analysis. CDPLN635: Community Leadership & Capacity Building (Fall 2017) – secondary instructor [primary instructor Stephanie Rolley]; this course provides students the opportunity to explore current thinking about leadership and the impact of leadership and communities. Also, students look at how community leadership programs can help enhance their role of leadership in the communities they serve.

Instructor, Florida State University – graduate level courses URP5316: Land-Use Planning (Spring 2010) – provides an opportunity for students to examine and understand existing land use planning methods and formats, develop their land use planning skills, and gain experience by developing a land use plan for a small hypothetical city.

URP5312: Comprehensive Planning and Growth Management (Fall 2009) – introduces the problems and needs of growth management and comprehensive planning in U.S. cities, covering public and private perspectives on development and growth management, state and national institutions involved in development, and planning approaches available for meeting the growth management problem.


URP5540: Economic Development (Fall 2009) – critically analyzes the strategy and tools for developing employment and investment in American state and local economies. Covers programs targeted to depressed urban communities and neighborhoods, unskilled and displaced workers, downtown and neighborhood commercial areas, small businesses, and specific sectors (e.g. high technology). The course also discusses the major trends in the location of business (including the development of the Sunbelt and the increased international competition with American industry) that affect the planning of state and local economies. URP5201: Research Design (Spring 2010) – focuses on the social research and evaluation methods used in planning, including: the linkage between theory, research, and policy; conceptualization and operationalization of the research problem; study designs; ethics; sampling; data sources and collection techniques; the logic of data analysis; and micro-computer use. INR5935: International Affairs Colloquium (Spring 2010) – topical seminar addressing issues in international affairs. URP5716: Transportation and Land Use (Spring 2009)* – examines the critical relationship between the transportation system and the built environment. Topics include urban and economic theories of transportation-land use interaction, the concept of accessibility, the effects of land use decisions on transportation, the effects of transportation decisions on land use, parking policy, measures of transportation system performance, and the concept of transit-oriented development. *For this course I was the permanent substitute for most of the semester (February to May 2009),

course developed and initiated by Jeffery Brown. Instructor, Florida State University – undergraduate level courses

URP3000: Introduction to Planning and Urban Development (Fall 2004-06; Spring 2005 & 2006; Summer 2005-08) – an introductory course on planning and urban development, providing an overview of planning history, processes, tools, and theories. URP4022: Collective Decision-Making (Fall 2007; Summer 2009 & 2010) – provides an introduction to planning as a collective decision-making tool and examines how planners work within a decision-making environment to move from planning concepts to implementing plans. URP4618: Planning for Developing Countries (Spring 2007 & 2008) – provides overview of development planning, what has been tried, what has been learned, and what the current challenges are; highlights the role of planners and planning institutions in the process.
