INTRODUCTION

Since the introduction of the Infotec 4850MF and 4105MF in 2000 and then the IS2090 and IS2105 in 2003, they have been established as one of the major players in the high volume sector. In order to increase our Total Document Volume (TDV) and MIF, the IS2090 and 2105 models were specifically developed to meet the needs of the production environment in the Central Reprographics Department (CRD) and Print for Pay (PFP) sector, as well as the needs of any organisation with high volume requirements, such as: schools, colleges, training depts etc. In March this year the IS2090 and IS2105 were seamlessly upgraded to the IS2090e and IS2105e providing even greater Durability, Reliability and Quality. In order to maintain our excellent position in this market and provide a more versatile solution within the production environment, several new finishing options have been introduced:-

Plockmatic SR90+ Booklet finisher, trimmer and the new Book Folder. GBC Stream Punch

These 3 options provide professional on-line finishing for documents which would once have been performed manually or outsourced at great expense.

Using these finishing solutions, organisations can not only produce more professional looking documents, but have total control over their production facility, cutting costs and saving time.

Z-FOLDING UNIT This Z-folding unit is the same for both the IS2090 and IS2105 as well as the IS2151, IS2160 and IS2175. With the Z-folding unit, we can provide customers with the benefit of reducing their outsourcing costs. The Z-folding unit enhances the strong and versatile finishing capability of these machines.

The relationship between the size of the front page and that of subsequent pages determines whether the subsequent pages can be Z-folded. One should select the folding position according to the print direction. If the size of the paper is the same as that of the front page, the paper can be Z-folded only if the front page can be Z-folded. As shown below, paper is delivered face down, with the feeding-edge is folded.

SR90+ BOOKLET FINISHER & TRIMMER

In order to increase the versatility of the SR90 booklet finisher, a new model, the SR90+ has been introduced. The difference between this and the SR90 is that the SR90+ can now handle up to 25 sheets per booklet – i.e. up to 100 pages in a document (most competitors only offer up to 15 sheets) A new Trimmer – the TR90+ has also been introduced in order to handle the extra capacity. With precision folding, very accurate stapling and the optional trimmer to neaten the edges, the SR90 is suitable for the most demanding professional CRD/PFP user. The SR90 can run at the full engine speed of the IS2090/105, although this depends on the sizes of the booklets. An optional colour cover interposer is also available for adding extra, colour-printed covers after the fusing process.

BF90+ BOOK FOLDER This amazing new option is called “Book folder”. The Book folder has a new-patented technology offered by Plockmatic, giving the booklet the appearance of a perfect bound book. This also gives you the option to have text printed on the spine (only when it has been pre-printed on the cover).

The Book Folder offers an alternative for customers who want glue binding, providing a more durable finish.

This is part of Ricoh’s concept to offer more complete and better on-line finishing than other competitive machines in this segment. It is no doubt a revolution in the industry that will give you the edge over the competition and increase the sales. The Book folder binding has a huge price advantage - Copy shops charge over £1 for a perfect bound booklet. The Book folder would allow them

to reduce that substantially / to increase their margin, and attract more customers / alternatively earn more.

- No special covers or other materials needed.

Communication with SR90 - The Book folder will receive set size information from the SR90 to optimise the pressure on

the booklet. The Book folder is better for the environment - No odours from glue and no hot areas to get burned on.

- No usage of glue.

- Glue bound books have to be treated separately by the paper mills when being recycled. Not so with stapled booklets.

User interface - All necessary settings that the operator wants to do on the Book folder will be performed

from the user interface on the SR90 Booklet maker.

- The same distinct fault codes and a diagnostic system that are used in the SR90 Booklet maker will be used for the Book folder.

The Interface on the SR90+ allows you to switch the Book folder on and Off and then select the number of sheets within the booklet to ensure the best finish.

The Difference between Booklet Finishers and Booklet Makers There is a difference between the products on the market which are supplied as ‘Booklet Finishers’ and those described as ‘Booklet Makers’, such as the SR90+. As opposed to the Booklet Finisher, usually suitable for the more general office application, the Booklet Maker is dedicated only to booklet production and provides:

• Exact folding and stapling – which is consistently positioned from the first to the last booklet produced.

• User adjustable settings if required

• Suitability to carry out both very short and very long production runs

• Ability to handle up to 25 sheets per booklet – i.e. up to 100 pages (most competitors only offer up to 15 sheets)

• On line trimming to remove the uneven edge caused by the ‘creep’ effect when booklets contain several pages – up to 10 mm can be trimmed off the front edge.

• The ability to use the Booklet Maker off-line by manual feeding allowing full colour booklets to be made

The SR90 and SR90+ have a number of improvements over their predecessor – the SR85:

• Higher pressure folding for a sharper result

• Improved stapling system for a flatter look and higher durability of staple heads

• More integration with the IS2090/105, so that settings can be made more easily eg A4 and A3 sizes can be selected from the main machine for automatic paper size adjustment

• A new anti-jam feature which means that all pages are expelled from the mainframe in the event of the SR90 stopping

• A new user interface for inputting operator settings, pre-programming up to 10 jobs and diagnosing faults via a system of codes.

GBC STREAMPUNCH The GBC StreamPunch is an online finishing solution for the IS2090 / IS2105 and in the future the IS2160 / IS2175. The GBC StreamPunch provides online hole punching using one of 6 interchangeable die sets, allowing for different binding methods to be used based on various market standard punch patterns.

The GBC StreamPunch is installed between the copier mainframe and the finisher unit. Paper punching is only possible on A4 size portrait mode (Long Edge Feed).

Key Benefits and Selling Points Reduction of labour cost The main advantage for the customer lies in the reduction of labour costs. This will result in a quick Return on Investment

Shorter Turnaround Time Because all production steps are kept in-house, a shorter turnaround time will be achieved.

Elimination of Pre-punched Paper Another cost saving lies in the fact that the StreamPunch eliminates the need for pre-punched paper. Limitations of pre-punched paper include:

Pre-punched paper types can only be purchased from limited suppliers (e.g. Xerox) and is therefore significantly more expensive. e.g. 21 hole pre-punched paper is almost 2.5 times more expensive than regular paper.

Only limited types of pre-punched paper are available. For many binding styles, no pre-punched is available at all.

Due to it’s the manufacturing process, pre-punched paper releases more paper dust. The increase in paper dust in the machine will increase the chance of machine malfunction.

Added value for PFP and CRD Services Punched Booklets lay flat. Wire bind, plastic comb bind and coil bind documents are designed to lay flat, making them very desirable for presentations and course materials. This provides newly added value to the PFP or CRD services.

Marketing Approach With the IS2090 / 2105 we can expand our target market upward, to now include the low volume DocuTech territory.

In addition to online Booklet making and 4 hole punching with standard stapling options, the Pay for Print and CRD market are requesting the capability to create documents that can be punched and then secured by various types of binding materials such as wire bind, plastic spines and spirals. These types of binds are widely used in the market because they provide the ability to produce a product that lies completely flat and allows more of the printed document to be utilized.

The GBC StreamPunch will differentiate IS2090 / 2105 from other competitor products in segment 5, which will result in a stronger product offering for PFP and CRD customers.

Compared to the Xerox Docutech Gluebinding system, the StreamPunch offers a cost effective and more flexible solution for creating booklets. This will enable you as dealers to develop a strong proposition in vertical markets like education, manufacturing.

Target User Classification As mentioned, the finishing system is targeted at CRD/PFP environment. In such environment, off-line hole punching is one of most labour-intensive jobs and CRD/PFP managers have a strong wish to have it automated. In such environments the numbers of HV copier devices are usually limited and so they cannot afford to assign one as a dedicated booklet-making copier.

Die sets

The interchangeable Die sets are options to the GBC StreamPunch. Die-sets must be ordered separately. The StreamPunch does not include any Die- sets. When no Die set is installed, the unit will still be able to run in bypass mode. Beside the installation of 1 die-set, the StreamPunch provides convenient storage area for three extra Die Sets located above the sheet bypass. Currently there are 6 different Die sets available. Each Die set corresponds with a certain punching style. Custom Die sets could be developed by GBC upon request, but this would be chargeable.

Binding equipment are tools or machines to bind the document together in a booklet. The binding process is performed offline

Twin loop wire is the traditionally dominant binding style in the print finishing trade. Plastic comb binding is also a major binding style, being the main style used in the office. Thermal binding is relatively strong in Germany, Holland & Switzerland, but is declining whilst comb & wire are maintaining their volumes.

Other binding styles are considerably smaller and are more ‘user’ specific. Velobinding is a dominant style with the legal profession. Coil is still a small part of the business but has significant USPs over wire and plastic comb - not crushable, long lasting. Coil is rapidly becoming a widely accepted binding style.

IbiClick is a polypropylene, re-openable binding style that has not yet been launched in the FM sector. It is now increasing significantly in volumes in the office channel, although the maximum sheet capacity is currently 95 sheets

Binding Trends in Europe. Benelux, as Germany and Switzerland, has a good thermal binding tradition, especially ‘bespoke’ (pre-printed), but it is still not as big as wire & comb.

Germany has also strong thermal binding history but wire is very strong. There is also a high penetration of strip binding.

UK is a strong wire and plastic comb market; dominated by GBC, with James Burn also a significant player, but in wire only. Thermal covers are less popular except in bespoke thermal covers France as other countries, is strong in comb and wire.

The Scandinavian markets are small but with a high penetration of printers and binding equipment Swiss market is small, but with high relative potential. Thermal is also quite strong Italy is a strong wire binding market with a strong national manufacturer, Rilecart. Spain has uniquely a 5:1 pitch metal coil market. This style being dominant in this country. This market, is traditionally a manual market and relatively small.

PC Control of the StreamPunch

There will be no driver support using any connectivity options The StreamPunch is manually activated.

Communication with copier There is no direct communication with the copier mainframe.

Paper orientation

The image rotation function of the 2090 and 2105 printers must be used to have the document punched on the proper side when it is placed in the feed tray in its normal face up position. This can be set and saved in this configuration.

Other paper sizes then A4 portrait

The punch unit only punches A4 portrait. Feeding of other paper sizes will result in paper jams in the StreamPunch and copier. The StreamPunch will not switch automatically back into bypass mode. The StreamPunch is not able to detect the paper size.

Mainframe connection The StreamPunch is installed between the copier mainframe and the finisher (SR840 or SR841). Installation must be carried out by an engineer.
