ANTHRACNOSE

A severe stem and crown disease that causes defoliation

Multiple races can be present in late season and occurs most of-ten under warm, moist conditions.

Race 1, 2, 3 and 4 have already been identified with current variety ratings to Race 1.

Causes yield losses of up to 25%.

On susceptible plants, stems have large, sunken, oval– to diamond-shaped lesions. Large lesions are straw col-ored with brown borders.

Lesions can enlarge and join together to gridle and kill one to several stems on a plant. Girdled stems may wilt suddenly and exhibit a “shepherd's hook”.

Dead stems are often scattered in the field with straw-colored to pearly white dead shoots. Infected crowns turn blue-black, pro-duce fewer stems per plant, and the plant eventually dies.

A different race of this disease has been iden-tified in the Midwest, Race 5, that overcomes standard variety resistances. Foliar fungicide can help to control this disease.

HVX MegaTron was developed to be highly resistant to this new race of Anthracnose.

APHANOMYCES ROOT ROT Infects roots; causes stunting, reduced nodulation and poor root development in seedlings.

Commonly found in soils that are saturated, poorly drained, compacted or have limited water dispersal.

Visual symptoms gray, wa-ter-soaked roots, yellowed cotyledons, stunted growth, and limited yields.

Race 1 is widely identified in the Midwest, East and areas of the Pacific Northwest.

Race 2 has been identified in more isolated areas of the United States.

Race 3 is a more severe pathogen found in the same regions as race 2 that varieties with HR to race 2 are susceptible to.

Varieties with HR to Race 1, 2, and 3 allow plants to establish a healthier root in wet soils. When soil dries out the root is better able to recover and ex-tract nutrients.
