However, some thought that the

experience had not actually been

successful, the IHF and the Organising

Committee of the Rio Olympic Games

have confirmed that they have opted

for a blue field as a hockey play surface

for 2016. Moreover, this will be exactly

the same coating that was used during

the 2012 Olympics in London. This

will be installed in the Olympic Hockey

Centre, based in Deodoro, in northern

Rio de Janeiro. Three years ago, the

transition to a blue field was a first. It

provided a high level of contrast, with the

yellow ball and white lines, for players,

umpires, spectators, photographers, and

television channels.

Kelly Fairweather, the CEO of the

International Hockey Federation, explains

this continuity in simple terms: “The blue field used during the London Games has enabled the sport to receive tremendous interest on the part of most media, as well as be one of the most broadcasted sports during the Olympics. Besides that, we are convinced that this adds to the spectator’s experience not only around the field but also via television and internet. “

What else? Artificial turf was

introduced for the first time at the 1976

Montreal Olympics. Up to the Games in

London, the playing surface had always

been green as a testament to the sport’s

roots on turf.

Story of the dayBelgium Through the Fans’ EyesPeople from all cultures gather in Brasschaat to celebrate hockey and support their favorite players. Some of them live a couple hours from here but others have to travel far to get to Belgium. Australian fans and parents of Hockeyroos player Anna Flanagan flew 22 hours to cheer on their daughter. New Zealand fans took a 24-hour plane ride to see the Black Sticks in action. But what do these foreign fans know about Belgium?Are they taking this opportunity to explore the country of Belgium? Anna Flanagan’s parents took some time to walk around Antwerp. New Zealand fans also took time to visit ‘t Stad (Antwerp) when they were not watching hockey. Oranje fans went to get some fresh air on the coast instead. To the question, “What do you know about Belgium?” Japanese observers, fan in hand, answered, “Flanders, Rubens, and diamonds.” The Flanagans pointed out that Belgium has some excellent beer and that Belgians are very sociable. Holland’s fans see Belgians as friendly people and Belgium as a country with two identities because they speak two languages.

How about Belgian food and beers? Almost all of the fans have tried the Belgian fries. Many of them said they like the taste of Belgian beers. One New Zealander commented that the Duvel is a bit too strong.

Fans interviewed did not know the Red Lions and Red Panthers very well. Indeed, few of them were able to name some of the Belgian players. A Japanese fan said, “I attended a match last year, Japan vs Belgium, I don’t remember their names but I can tell you they played very well.” The Hockey World League is the perfect opportunity to discover these players!

The modern history of hockey began in England with the founding of Blackheath,

the world’s first club, in 1851. However, it was the British army that really allowed

the sport to develop within numerous colonies (India, Pakistan, Australia, etc.) and

offer it a world scope. But the history of British hockey, which has taken many

shifts and turns in the last century, really began at the 1908 Olympic Games where

England took the Gold medal back to London, ahead of Ireland and Scotland. It

would only be on Saturday 31 July 1948, however, that the GB team would first

face Switzerland (0-0). Team GB is a team that groups English, Scottish, Northern

Irish, and Welsh players under

the same flag at each Olympic

meet. Today, the group looks

to be more solid than ever and

ready to succeed under the

Lion’s flag, finally looking to

achieve a podium place at the

Rio Games.

Toujours en bleu…

Alors que certains pensaient que

l’expérience n’avait pas réellement

été concluante, la FIH et le Comité

d’Organisation des Jeux de Rio ont

confirmé qu’ils avaient opté pour un

terrain bleu comme surface de jeu pour

le hockey, pour 2016. Il s’agira, d’ailleurs,

exactement du même revêtement que

celui utilisé, en 2012, à Londres. Celui-ci

sera installé dans le Olympic Hockey

Centre, installé à Deodoro, dans Nord

de Rio de Janeiro. Il y a trois ans, le

passage à un terrain bleu était une

première. Il permettait d’offrir un

niveau élevé de contraste avec la balle

jaune et les lignes blanches, pour les

joueurs, les arbitres, les spectateurs, les

photographes et les chaînes de télévision.

Kelly Fairweather, le CEO de la Fédération

Internationale de hockey, a d’ailleurs très

simplement explique cette continuité :

« Le terrain bleu utilisé lors des Jeux de Londres a permis à la discipline d’obtenir un immense intérêt de la part de la plupart des médias mais aussi d’être l’une des plus diffusées durant les JO. À côté de cela, nous sommes persuadés que cela offre un plus à l’expérience des spectateurs autour du terrain mais aussi via la télévision et l’internet. »

What else? Le gazon artificiel a été

introduit, pour la toute première fois,

lors des JO de Montréal, en 1976. Et,

jusqu’aux Jeux de Londres, la surface

de jeu avait toujours été de couleur verte

pour rappeler les racines du sport et le

gazon.

Story of the dayLa Belgique à travers les yeux des supporters Des personnes d’horizons et de cultures différents se retrouvent à Brasschaat pour célébrer le hockey et encourager leurs joueurs favoris. Alors que certains vivent à quelques heures de voiture d’ici, d’autres parcourent un (très) long chemin. Ainsi, des fans australiens - et pas n’importe lesquels ! - ont volé 22 heures pour venir encourager leur fille, Anna Flanagan. Quant aux supporters néo-zélandais, ils ont passé 24 heures dans l’avion pour venir voir les Kiwis en action.

Que connaissent au fait les supporters étrangers de la Belgique ? Ils profitent de leur séjour pour visiter le pays ? Les parents d’Anna Flanagan ont pris le temps de se promener dans la ville d’Anvers. Les fans néo-zélandais ont également visité ‘t Stad, alors que des fans oranje sont allés prendre un peu d’air frais à la côte. À la question « que connaissez-vous de la Belgique ? », des fans japonais, un éventail à la main, répondent : « la Flandre, Rubens et les diamants ». Les Flanagan pointent le fait que la Belgique a d’excellentes bières et que les Belges sont très amicaux. Des supporters néerlandais voient les Belges comme des personnes « sympathiques » et la Belgique comme un pays avec deux langues, deux identités.

Qu’en est-il de la cuisine belge et de nos bières ? Tous, ou presque, ont goûté les « Belgian Fries ». Beaucoup disent aimer les bières belges. « La Duvel est cependant un peu trop forte, » nous indique un Néo-Zélandais.

Les supporters interviewés ne connaissent pas encore bien nos Red Lions et nos Red Panthers. En effet, peu sont capables de citer des noms de joueu(r)s(es) évoluant dans nos équipes nationales. « J’ai assisté l’an passé à un match du Japon face à la Belgique. Je ne me souviens pas des noms, mais je peux vous dire qu’ils avaient un très bon niveau », nous révèle un supporter nippon. La Hockey World League est l’occasion rêvée de les découvrir !

L’histoire moderne du hockey débute, en Angleterre, avec la fondation de Blackheath, le premier club au monde, en 1851. Mais c’est ensuite l’armée britannique qui permettra réellement à la discipline de se développer au sein de ses nombreuses colonies (Inde, Pakistan, Australie,…) et lui offrira un rayonnement mondial. L’histoire du hockey britannique, qui a connu de nombreuses péripéties, depuis plus d’un siècle, débute néanmoins réellement lors des Jeux de 1908 lorsque l’Angleterre remporte, à Londres, la médaille d’or devant l’Irlande et l’Ecosse. Mais il faut attendre le samedi 31 juillet 1948 pour assister à la première rencontre de la Team GB face à la Suisse (0-0). Une équipe, qui regroupe donc, sous la même bannière, lors de chaque rendez-vous olympique, les joueurs anglais, écossais, nord-irlandais et gallois. Aujourd’hui, le groupe semble plus soudé que jamais pour réussir de nouveaux exploits sous la bannière du Lion et renouer, enfin, avec le podium lors des Jeux de Rio.

• Hier, les joueurs australiens ont rendu hommage à leurs compatriotes qui ont combattu lors de la première Guerre Mondiale. Après s’être rendus au Polygon Wood et avoir visité le cimetière Tyne Cot, les deux légendes des Kookaburras, Jamie Dwyer et Blake Govers, ont déposé une couronne de fleurs devant la Porte de Menin à Ypres.

• Le hockey est un sport rapide. Les joueurs, les arbitres et la balle piquent constamment des sprints vers les quatre coins du terrain, comme pour voir qui est le plus rapide. Mais qui court réellement après qui ? A vous de vérifier !

• Le gardien belge, Jeremy Gucassoff, jouera sa 100e cap aujourd’hui.

• Jan Jambon, Ministre de l’Intérieur et bourgmestre empêché de Brasschaat, est venu encourager les Red Panthers hier. La commune peut être remerciée pour sa coopération et tout ce qu’elle a fait pour faciliter l’organisation de l’événement !

Hoewel de test volgens sommigen

niet echt overtuigend was, hebben de

FIH en het organisatiecomité van de

Olympische Spelen in Rio bevestigd dat de

hockeywedstrijden in 2016 op een blauw

veld zullen plaatsvinden. Dit is trouwens

exact dezelfde bekleding die gebruikt

werd in Londen in 2012. Het veld wordt

aangelegd in het Olympic Hockey Centre

in Deodoro, in het noorden van Rio de

Janeiro. De overstap naar een blauw veld

kwam er drie jaar geleden. Dit creëert

een groter contrast met de gele bal en de

witte lijnen, zowel voor de spelers en de

scheidsrechters als voor de toeschouwers,

de fotografen en de televisiezenders.

Kelly Fairweather, CEO van de

Internationale Hockeyfederatie, heeft

deze keuze trouwens heel eenvoudig

verwoord: “Dankzij het blauwe veld op de Spelen in Londen kon de sport op enorm veel belangstelling rekenen van tal van media en was hockey ook een van de meest uitgezonden sporten tijdens de OS. Daarnaast zijn we ervan overtuigd dat dit de kijkervaring van de toeschouwers zal verbeteren, zowel rond het veld als op televisie en via het internet.”

What else? Tijdens de OS in Montréal

in 1976 wordt voor het eerst op kunstgras

gespeeld. En tot de Spelen in Londen is

het veld altijd groen, als verwijzing naar de

oorsprong van de sport en naar het gras.

Personen met verschillende achtergronden en culturen vinden elkaar in Brasschaat om het hockey te vieren en hun favoriete spelers aan te moedigen. Sommigen wonen slechts enkele uurtjes rijden van Brasschaat, anderen moeten dan weer een lange weg afleggen. Zo hebben Australische fans 22 uur gevlogen om te supporteren voor hun dochter Anna Flanagan. Nieuw-Zeelandse supporters hebben zelfs 24 uur doorgebracht in het vliegtuig om de Kiwi’s in actie te zien.

Wat weten de buitenlandse supporters over België? Profiteren ze van hun komst om het land te ontdekken? De ouders van Anna Flanagan hebben al de tijd genomen om Antwerpen te bezoeken. Ook de Nieuw-Zeelandse fans hebben ’t Stad al verkend. Nederlandse fans zagen hun kans dan weer schoon om de koelte op te zoeken aan de Belgische kust.Op de vraag wat ze van België kennen, antwoorden Japanse fans, met een waaier in de hand: ‘Vlaanderen, Rubens en diamanten’. Ook de Flanagans halen diamanten aan, maar ‘België heeft ook uitstekende bieren en de mensen zijn hier heel vriendelijk’. Nederlandse supporters zien de Belgen als ‘sympathieke mensen’ en ze bekijken België als een tweetalig land met twee identiteiten.Hoe zit het met de Belgische keuken en onze bieren? Bijna allen hebben ze de ‘Belgian fries’ geproefd. Velen houden ook van de Belgische bieren. ‘Maar Duvel is toch wel zwaar’, merkt een Nieuw-Zeelandse fan op.

De supporters met wie we spraken, kennen onze Red Lions en Red Panthers niet goed. Bijna niemand was in staat om de naam van een speler van onze nationale ploegen te noemen. ‘Ik heb een wedstrijd tussen Japan en België bijgewoond’, vertelt een Japanse supporter. ‘Hun namen herinner ik me niet meer, maar ik kan u wel vertellen dat ze op hoog niveau speelden’. De Hockey World League is dus de perfecte gelegenheid om onze spelers te ontdekken!

De geschiedenis van het moderne hockey begon in Engeland met de oprichting van Blackheath in 1851, de eerste hockeyclub ter wereld. Vervolgens werd het spel verder ontwikkeld door het Britse leger in de verschillende Engelse kolonies (India, Pakistan, Australië ...). Pas vanaf dat moment kreeg de sport wereldwijd aanzien. Toch ging het succesverhaal van het Britse hockey, dat meer dan een eeuw lang heel wat moeilijkheden kende, pas écht van start tijdens de Olympische Spelen van 1908. Toen won Engeland in Londen een gouden medaille ten koste van Ierland en Schotland. Daarna was het wachten tot zaterdag 31 juli 1948 voor de eerste wedstrijd tussen Team GB en Zwitserland (0-0). Tijdens elke editie van de Olympische Spelen brengt dat team de beste Engelse, Schotse, Noord-Ierse en Welshe spelers samen. Vandaag lijkt de groep hechter dan ooit en willen de spelers uiteraard nieuwe topprestaties neerzetten door opnieuw het podium te beklimmen tijdens de Olympische Spelen in Rio.

• Gisteren betuigde het Australische mannenteam eer aan hun landgenoten die streden in de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Nadat ze Polygon Wood en Tyne Cot Cemetery bezochten, legden Kookaburras Jamie Dwyer en Blake Govers kransen neer aan de Menenpoort in Ieper.

• Hockey is een snelle sport. Spelers, scheidsrechters en de bal trekken constant sprintjes naar alle uithoeken van het terrein. Het lijkt erop dat ze willen laten zien wie de snelste is. Maar wie loopt eigenlijk achter wie? Aan u om het uit te vissen!

• Belgisch doelman Jeremy Gucassoff zal vandaag zijn 100ste cap spelen.

• Minister van Binnenlandse Zaken en burgemeester (in titel) van Brasschaat Jan Jambon kwam gisteren onze Red Panthers aanmoedigen. We willen de gemeente Brasschaat bedanken voor de medewerking en het vergemakkelijken van de organisatie van dit evenement.
