Hybrid and plug-in electric vehicles use electricity as their primary fuel or toimprove the eciency of conventional vehicle designs. This new generationof vehicles, often called electric drive vehicles, can be divided into three categories:hybrid electric

vehicles (HEs!, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles ("HEs!, and all-electricvehicles(Es!. HEs are powered by an internal combustion engine or otherpropulsion sourcethat runs on conventional or alternative fuel and an electric motor that usesenergy storedin a battery. The e#tra power provided by the electric motor allows for asmaller engine, resulting in better fuel economy without sacri$cing performance. HEscombine thebene$ts of high fuel economy and low emissions with the power and range of

conventional vehicles. "HEs are powered by conventional fuels and byelectricalenergy stored in a battery. %sing electricity from the grid to charge thebattery some ofthe time costs less and reduces petroleum consumption compared withconventionalvehicles. "HEs can also reduce emissions, depending on the electricitysource. Es usea battery to store the electrical energy that powers the motor. E batteriesare charged byplugging the vehicle into an electric power source.

&n this "ro'ect a universal "ower &nterface for all the above discussed type ofvehicles. asically, the proposed converter interfaces the energy storagedevice of thevehicle with the motor drive and the e#ternal charger, in case of "HEs. Theproposedconverter is capable of operating in all directions in buc) or boost modeswith a noninverted output voltage (positive output voltage with respect to the input!andbidirectional power *ow. &n e#tension to the wor) the proposed "ower&nterface is +ed to

a witched eluctance otor /rive and the performance is analy0ed.
