At the start of the season, nervous feelings buzzed through the air. There were high expectations with new players and different personalities. Preseason separated varsity from JV players and the season started to roll. In Berwick, at our Jamboree, our playing styles started to mesh. As the season progressed, Phoenix players evolved into a force. Cole, our outside midfielder, gained confidence in his crosses, Kiefer was unstoppable in the midfield, and our defense was “too nasty” for words to describe. Our team has become a family. From the time that the bus broke down and stranded us in Woodstock to our tears shed in the Teak Room…we are a family…a family of brothers. I cannot possibly recognize all of the talent and effort in only a few words, but I can tell you that our family can never be separated. Put your shin guards on and strap on your boots boys, because it’s time to win a New England Championship! —Ethan Morrow

The Boys Varsity Soccer Team hit the field under sunny skies on their home campus to play the semifinal match against Lexington Christian Academy.! It was a battle from the first kick of the match. !Both teams had numerous chances to score.! Hyde defensive playersWondo Shaw ’13,!Andrew Davis ’15,!Nabil Eshraghian ’13, and Post Grad!Sam Mann!did a stellar job of helping Keeper!Billy Martinez ’13!preserve the shut out.!! Hyde mid-fielders!Kiefer Cundy ’15, Eduardo Gadsden ’13,Cole Faulkner ’15!and!Wes Miller ’15!did a good job of maintaining possession of the ball and finding ways to move it forward to strikers!!Wilson MacMillan ’14!and captain!Ethan Morrow ’13.! The tension was palpable in the final minutes of the game as the clock ticked down.

With less than a minute remaining, the team worked the ball up the left flank where it went out of bounds deep in the offensive end.! With the clock ticking down toward overtime,!Kiefer Cundy ’15!whipped a huge throw-in into the box and!Wilson MacMillan ’14!found the back of the net with 12 seconds left on the clock.! With the win, the team advanced to the finals at Middlesex School in Concord Massachusetts on Sunday.

The Championship match was played against MacDuffie School on a natural grass pitch under clear and sunny conditions. !!The atmosphere was brimming with excitement as there were four championship (class A, B, C, D) and two all-star matches being played in the same day.! The best of the best in prep school soccer from across New England were gathered to determine this season’s champions.

The match started with a quick goal from Captain!Wondo Shaw ’13!off a!Kiefer Cundy ’15!corner kick.! From that point on, the Hyde lads dominated the possession game, but struggled to find the back of the net.! Center mid-fieldersEduardo Gadsden ’13!and!Kiefer Cundy ’15!did a great job of keeping

the ball in our attacking third of the field, but their keeper made some fantastic saves and kept the score to 1-0 at the half.

MacDuffie came out strong in the second half and had a couple of break-away chances, but defenders Sam!Mann ’14,!Wondo Shaw ’13,!Andrew Davis ’15!and!Nabil Eshraghian ’13!managed the back and thwarted their attacks.! However, in the 76th!minute, a MacDuffie player went down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick.! Keeper!Billy Martinez ’13!made a terrific save on the PK, but unfortunately, it was poked in by the opposition off the rebound to even the score.! The game remained tied at the end of regulation.

The Hyde boys refocused during the break before overtime and once again took the field with determination and poise.! They created numerous opportunities to score, but the first overtime expired in a knot.! Hyde’s defensive unit weathered a couple advances early in the second overtime period, but managed to move the ball up the field to Captain!Ethan Morrow ’13!who was streaking toward goal.!!Morrow!laid the ball off to wide open!Wilson MacMillan ’14!who converted the golden goal to cement the championship win.

Coach Randy Smith said of the team, “These boys had what will be a very memorable season.! They faced many challenges on their run to the title. !In the end, it was their commitment to playing as a team that created the synergy and strength of character, which allowed them to fulfill their championship potential.! They are a special bunch, and coach Plourde and I are very proud of their collective grit, tenacity and sportsmanship this fall.! They represented themselves and our school with class.! It was a fitting end to a wonderful season.”

After thorough domination of the MAISAD (Maine independent school league) meet followed by a 2nd-place finish among 24 teams at the New Englands — missing 1st place honors by a single point – the Hyde-Bath cross-country team wasn’t ready to stop running. So, they organized the Flight of the Phoenix: Bath to Woodstock Relay, a 208-mile odyssey involving guys, gals, and a few grown-ups. Beginning in the dark in Bath on Friday (11/16) at 5 AM, each runner committed to four 5-mile legs. 29 hours and 48 minutes later – 7 hours ahead of their goal — they ar-rived on the Woodstock campus. They also raised over $3000 for Bath’s Good Shepherd Food Bank. The runners concluded their run by hang-ing a medal around The Wolf (bronze sculpture) on the Woodstock cam-pus, placing a note issuing a challenge to their sister school for next year in the mouth of the Wolf. Stay tuned. —Malcolm Gauld

While most of the students headed off by car, bus, plane and foot to begin their Thanksgiving break, a group of students stayed on campus to take part in two exciting events. Before daybreak on Friday morning, the Flight of the Phoenix team took off for the Hyde-Woodstock campus. Running through the day and the night and part of the next day, they arrived at our sister school 29 hours and 48 minutes later, seven hours ahead of schedule. The team did fantastic with no major injuries and high spirits the entire way. They were helped out along the route by several Hyde-Bath families who offered a place to

rest, good food to eat and even at times a police escort! The relay raised $4,067 for the Good Shepherd Food Bank, which equates to Hyde-Bath being responsible for a third of the Bath Food Mobile Trucks for the entire year. The entire campus is incredibly proud of the hard work the team put in and the tremendous success of the fundraiser.

Indoor Track 105

Page 59: Hyde Bath Sports 2013

For a small team of only 10 girls, I believe that we have accomplished what teams with 50 plus could not even handle. With an accumulated 150 miles run by the distance crew, hundreds of laps circling the gym by the sprinters and weights crew, and the innumerable curl ups we have done as a team, we have beat those larger teams in both endurance and spirit. We have made breakthroughs this season. With Ferina and Heaven having both placed first in their heats of the dreaded 400, Julia and I traveling to Bates college for the state meet, Avery and Erika tackling the evil 3200, Wang Xi getting PR after PR in the mile, Jenny annihilating the 800m, Tina making her debut in the 200m, and Olivia showing that shot-put who's boss, we showed the opposing track teams how smaller teams get stuff done. I could not have asked for a better and more inspirational team. Athletes aside, I must say that all of this wouldn't have been possible without the countless "Set, Ho!" commands from Mr. Grant, and the calm and collected pep talks of Ms. Muchimuti. Together, you have taught us how to push ourselves, because as Mr. !grant might say, "It's all between the ears." Thank you to the team and coaches for such an amazing season. —Maddy Preece

To be honest, I didn’t think that this years indoor track team would be as successful as it was. I have seen tremendous improvement across the board from all athletes in every event. Although we had rough spots throughout the season, we battled through and came out strong. I have learned that an elite team is derived from commitment, enthusiasm, mental toughness, and overall good attitudes. When the time comes to out perform the next competitor, it’s all between the ears. We were able to overcome the fear of a square track, the fear of a dirt track, and the fear of being outnumbered; most of the time, significantly outnumbered. Some shout-outs go to Andrew Davis for his competitiveness and true grit toward other athletes battling him out at the end. And although he was injured in the later part of the season, he inspired us all to battle the “fluff between the ears”. Alexi for always jumping higher, landing harder, and running faster than ever before. Zach, for coming onto the road and constantly pushing me and the distance crew to run faster and longer. Great performance for a first year distance runner. Ethan, for always having a positive attitude and helping others learn handoffs or the high jump. Bailey, for joining the team midseason and putting in his best. Thank you Ms. Muchimuti, for all your always welcome core workouts and sometimes much needed leadership. And finally, to Mr. Grant who has demonstrated commitment and inspiration to every athlete he coaches. And everyone else who I didn’t mention. Thank you coaches and team for being an outstanding group of hard working individuals.
