From the President
I am pleased to report that Hyde Park Country Club continues to run very efficiently and maintains its culture as one of the top family clubs in the city. We are all excited and prepared as we kick-off the summer months. Change is something we all contend with all the time. Sometimes it is necessary and inevitable. As a parent of a college freshman, that was a time of change and new beginnings for us. Other times, change strengthens what we had when we began, such as meeting new friends or doing volunteer work. At Hyde Park Country Club, the Board tries to incorporate changes that will inspire the members of the Club to use their Club more and the majority of our membership will benefit from. That said, Hyde Park is rooted in tradition now for over 100 years. Change for the sake of change is not necessary. We understand that this tradition is the life blood of the Club and what makes us what we are today!
As we enter into the summer, I ask that you consider a few personal changes. We have a new tennis pro, so maybe you ask for a Mother's Day present and take a lesson with Eric. There is a new paddle ball designed just for summer, so maybe you take a paddle serving lesson from Heather. Maybe you've saved your grandmother’s recipe for shrimp scampi and you ask Chef Ralph to whip up a batch. Or maybe you demo the new Taylor Made irons in the pro shop from Larry called Rocket Balls, yes Rocket Balls! As the new fitness equipment arrives, ask Paul for some golf exercises. He has just completed a class that focused on golf fitness.
Finally, you may have noticed some changes around the Club. With the talented direction of Doug Grewie, we have spruced up the decor of the interior of the Club significantly. We are striving to always improve and keep our members happy and proud of their Club! Embrace the new changes and try something new too!
From the General Manager
Dear Member,
Updates to your Club are not always present to the eye, but nonetheless are essential to the efficient operation and
quality service you have come to expect.
The following are improvements which have occurred or will occur in the near future, some of which are visible
while others are not yet still provide a benefit in some fashion: repair to the wall along # 6 green, purchase of new
greens mowers and topdresser for the golf course, resurfacing of the bowling lanes, replacement of main pool plumb-
ing system, new pool heater, improvements to the Clubhouse interior, fitness room expansion, practice green fence replacement, new range
mats, new range ball washer, new range ball picker and new A/C for the Pro Shop.
Annual, monthly, weekly and daily improvements by Rick Spivey and his staff continue as well, as they hurriedly prepare for the
anticipated summer season: snack Bar opening, porch opening, caddy room and caddy area, ice machines, water fountains, pool, pool patio
and pool restrooms opening. All requiring a great deal of attention, time and in some cases repairs and replacements. Rick and his staff do
a tremendous job, thanks!
If you missed the Junior Round-Up, there may still be time to sign up for golf, tennis, swimming and diving. . . but hurry as the camps and
clinics fill up quickly. The Swim and Dive Coaches are looking to repeat the fun season experienced last season and appreciate your assis-
tance with encouraging participation amongst all children!
A friendly reminder with golf and other activities commencing at the Club to please inform your guests that the use of cell phones at the bar
and in all dining areas of the Club are not permitted, and to please remove hats while at the bar or in the dining rooms or on the porch.
Thank you.
Regards,
Eric O'Bryan
The golf course has officially opened and is in great shape. With
spring’s early arrival, Pat O’Brien and his crew completed aerifica-
tion at the end of March this year. With great weather from Mother
Nature, top dressing from the grounds crew and a little fertilizer for
good measure, the greens are healed 100% and ready for the 2012
golf season.
Caddie Master Pat Stricker is back for his 14th season at Hyde Park,
and he has been busy since early March training a new class of
caddies. With his returning caddies and new trainees, our program
should be as strong as ever. Pat is being assisted this year by
members Joe Worrall and Don Richter who will again head the
Evans Scholar Program. We would like to encourage you to try a
caddie if you have never done so. Walking our golf course with a
caddie is truly a pleasure that every golfer should experience.
The Junior Sports Round-Up took place on Sunday, April 22nd , and
parents were able to register their children for golf, swimming and
tennis for the coming 2012 season. Registration for junior golf
clinics and camps (ages 7 and up) is still available by calling the
golf shop.
On Sunday, April 7th, we hosted a Saturday @ The Masters Pro-Am
golf event in conjunction with the final round of this year’s Masters

their player in the final round of The Masters. Our Hyde Park
member was paired with that player combining his net score with the
final round score of his partner to determine their team total score.

Suggested Golf Reading From the HPGCC Golf Librarian’s Corner
Wow! What a thrilling Masters Tournament. Great par saves, birdies galore, a few eagles and only the fourth double eagle in the history of
the Masters; this one by Louie Oosthuizen, on #2. From Eugenio Sarenceni’s 1935 “shot heard ‘round the world,” on #15, to Bubba
Watson’s “shot turned ‘round the trees”, to win this years Masters, on the second hole of a playoff. From Phil Mickelson’s “leap for joy”,
after winning his first major in 2004, to Bubba’s “tears of joy”, on #10 green, after winning his first major. From no left-handers winning
since the beginning of the tournament, to 5 lefties winning in the last 10 years.
Ironically, the first southpaw to win The Masters was Mike Weir, who also won in a playoff, on the 10 th hole. By the way, did you know
that PGA tour pros Heath Slocum and Boo Weekley were just a couple of years ahead of Bubba at Milton High School in Bagdad, Florida?
Can you imagine two guys named Bubba and Boo on the same golf team?
Do you want to learn more about this tournament of tournaments? In the past, I recommended the Augusta National Edition of The Making
of the Masters: Clifford Roberts, Augusta National and Golf’s Most Prestigious Tournament. Also recommended was The Masters; Golf,
Money and Power in Augusta, Georgia, by Curt Simpson.
If you want to learn even more about the history and the “lore” of the greatest golf tournament in the world, I would recommend two other
books. One is titled Masters Memories, by Cal Brown. Mr. Brown has a lengthy association with the history of Augusta National through
his relationship with Frank Christian, Jr. Frank was the long-time official photographer of the tournament. This book contains several
wonderful short “stories” that will enlighten you as to what goes on, not only behind the scenes, but also between the ropes.
The other book I came across is The Masters, by Tom Flaherty. While this book was written 50 years ago, the photographs and the year by
year description of the main story of each year, from 1934 through 1960, make this a must read for anyone who wants to dig a little deeper
into the intriguing history of this grand, annual event.
Oh well, we only have to wait eleven more months until the next Masters.
From the Chef
With the new season being here, I would like to thank the membership for their
patience with me getting to know the membership and getting better informed on the
pulse of the membership for what they are looking for in dining options. As you can imagine, there are many
ideas from the membership, I hope with the menu ideas that are coming out in the new menu that it represents
the desires. Not all ideas could be accommodated, but there will be changes thru the season to insure that all
requests can be accommodated.
Starting in May, we will be offering two for $25.00 dining features, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays It will include choice of
salad, entrée and shared dessert. The menu will change daily and be presented in the daily dining features and will be posted on the web-site
for the members to view. Also, we will be adding a chef-attended station to the Sunday brunch along with the omelet station. This offering
will change every Sunday. The Saturday dining feature will also change weekly, and will be themed on a country or region of dining
offerings.
I would like to thank the members who keep giving me great ideas for the items that they would like to see, and for their support during this
transition time for me. I look forward to a great summer season, and please feel free to continue to get in touch with me in ways that I can
be helpful to you and the club.

Around the Grounds
Dear Member:
The practice facility is now open on the grass tee primarily on Friday,
Saturday and Sunday for the majority of May. Tuesday through
Thursday all practicing will occur on the new driving range mats,
including the use of drivers. (Unless bag stands are set up on the
turf).
I have been asked a few questions on the proper etiquette on divot
removal patterns on the grass tee. Below are a few pictures of divot
patterns that are exhibited at HP. Ideally, there are two divot patterns
that allow for increased recuperation and the most efficient use of
turf. They are: “scattered” and “lineal” divot patterns. The lineal
divot pattern is a series of divots connected in lineal fashion with a
minimum of 2-3” of turf between each strip. This is the most ideal
pattern allowing for a faster recovery time and the most efficient use
of the hitting area. The creeping bentgrass left between the divots
will grow horizontally, decreasing the amount of time for recovery.
The scattered pattern is random, similar to the
lineal pattern discussed above, it also has a
minimum of 2-3” between each divot. Although
the scattered pattern allows for a faster recovery
time it is a less efficient use of space in the
hitting area.
The third pattern is the concentrated divot pattern. This divot pattern
does not allow for efficient recovery because there is no turf left in
this large patch. All the recovery must be through the germination of
seed, which can take 7-20 days depending on the weather conditions
and the amount of traffic on the tees. This technique should be
avoided.
For any questions please email us at [email protected] or

Retail wine sales continue to do very well here at the club as more and more members are taking advantage of some very eye-catching prices that we have been offering. Convenience, fair pricing, good recommendations, and exciting selections really make purchasing wine here at your club a fun experience. Wine tastings also get members excited. In April, we started a series of monthly wine tastings. Every month I will select one day so we can have a club wine tasting offering some unique, boutique wines that most people don’t see and taste every day. April 13th we tasted some interesting wines that were distributed by Tramonte
and Sons -a small family-owned company out of Lebanon, Ohio. This month, we have a wine tasting on Wednesday, May 30th beginning at 6:30 in the Old Main Bar featuring some nice Italian selections from Regional Importers. Joe Zappasodi will be here to host this event. The cost is only $15.99 per person. You may have noticed an advertisement in this newsletter about the Statton Lummis and “The Riddler.” Again, this is a limited production wine that is hand crafted by winemaker Statton Lummis. We are going to have a contest to test your palate on this wine. If you can guess the seven varietals and the predominate blend in this wine, you will win a signed bottle of “The Riddler” from the wine maker Statton Lummis. You will also receive a personal phone call from Statton Lummis. The Riddler and Civello, a white blend, will be our featured wines by the glass in May. Make sure to order a glass or two of “The Riddler” in May. Send your answers to me here at the club [email protected] or call me here in the office at extension #116. I will forward your answers to Statton Lummis. We will have a special wine tasting on Tuesday night, June 12th. Henry Vasquez, Regional Sales Manager from Row Eleven Wine Company, will be here at your club to introduce you to all of Statton Lummis wines. During the tasting, the two winners will be announced from the contest. This will be a fun event, and the cost is only $15.99 per person. Beer dinner! You have asked about having a beer dinner here at the club, and we have one scheduled for Thursday, June 28th at 6:30 beginning in the Old Main Bar with dinner in the Ballroom. The beers will be from the Great Lakes Brewing Company. The cost per person should run around $49.99 per person. More details will be available in early May.
The Riddler wants to Know
How Good is your Palate???
Can you name the seven different varietals?
in this wine????????
Think about it. Taste the wine! Can you figure it out???
If you can guess the seven varietals in this wine,
including the predominate varietal,
you will win a bottle of
Stratton Lummis “The Riddler”
Signed by Wine Maker Stratton Lummis.
Mr. Lummis will also give you a
personal call from the Napa Valley Winery.
The Riddler will be available by the glass in the
Ross Room and Club Room during the month
of May.

and I will forward them to Stratton Lummis.
The top two winners will be announced at the
Stratton Lummis Wine Tasting in the Old Main Bar
on Tuesday, June 12th at 6:30 p.m.
Wine Tasting cost $15.99 per person. Guests welcome.

Nine Holers News April 2012
The Nine Holers and the Eighteen Holers got together on April 5, 2012 for collaboration and cocktails. By treating their members to a first big-girl beverage (served by Les in the Terrace Room), the tone was set for a season of camaraderie at the Club. The competition would come later.
Linda Spadaccini, Chair of the Nine Holers, welcomed newcomers and returning golfers and laid out plans for the golf season. The Nine Hole golf group would continue to be THE league for all interested lady golfers of all skill levels. After the brief meet-ing, members followed the favorite tradition of the group by eating after meeting! The Opening Meeting was held on April 18. Twenty-two attended. Sign-ups were encouraged and the $45 dues/member was collected. Treasurer Paula Watters announced that she would be ending her long, faithful tenure as Nine Holers Moneybags, working this season with Jean Macejko, before passing the checkbook off to Jean for good. The Nine Holers thank Paula for her years of service. Bobby Bromley, after years of being The Gift Committee, will also retire her shopping cart. Someone else will shop in Bobby’s footsteps! Thanks to Bobby for her great taste and shopping smarts. The esteemed HPG&CC Golf Professionals attended the meeting to offer their continuing support of this golf group. Larry, Jeff and Marshall teach us, encourage us and advise us. They are tops in their profession and tops in our book. Linda described the new Open Play Division which is available to any golfers who choose not to compete in a weekly event. Come to play for fun only or competition and remember to sign up in the appropriate place in the locker room book. Sign up for lunch where we rehash our great and/or ridiculous shots. Carla Matteucci invited participation in Interclub golf, played on Fridays at one of the 13 participating golf clubs. There are sign-up sheets for that also in the locker room. After the meeting, because it was a beautiful spring day, many stayed to play golf, which is what it’s all about. Opening Day on April 25 began cool and damp but warmed up after a few holes. The course was in great shape and all 27 golfers were enthusiastic about the new season. The event was a Scramble with prizes for three teams. In first place with a 38 were Nancy Shepardson, Jean Macejko and Carla Matteucci. Second place was won by Gretchen Hensel, Judy Evans and Kathy Coogan with a 40. The third place team (42) was won in a tie breaker by Carolyn Bledsoe, Bobbi Bromley and Ellie Ir-win. Before lunch, Connie Brooks reluctantly passed the chairperson’s tiara to Linda and Linda graciously accepted it, though she wondered if she shouldn’t also have a scepter. (A golf club will have to suffice.) Liz Baker hosted the luncheon of berry chick-en salad and chocolate mousse cake. At each place setting was a pair golf balls purchased at the Florida PGA show. Four lucky winners took home the orchid centerpieces. From the sounds of the conversation and laughter, the 2012 golf season is off to a good start. Join us if you haven’t signed up. Respectfully submitted, Kathy Coogan

FITNESS 101
by Paul Bodenbach
Improving your health and fitness doesn’t need to feel like going to the dentist or eating vegetables
when we were kids. However, for many people it seems that way because of how it was introduced
to them when they were younger. Many may remember they were made to feel badly because they
couldn’t accomplish certain physical activities. Most can relate being harassed by coaches and
instructors for not doing pushups, squats or sit-ups perfectly. It was bad enough not being able to do
it as well as those around you, but you also had to endure the mental duress as well. It definitely
wasn’t any fun.
Well, I’m here to tell you those people were wrong on many different levels. For our purposes, let’s
stick with accomplishing the physical activities. Everyone needs to understand that controlled
movement of any kind is beneficial. It doesn’t have to be done perfectly through a set range of
motion, with a set amount of weight, repetitions, speed or duration. All of those factors are variable
and you are in charge of those factors to your own liking.
Let’s look at something as simple as walking. A walk after the evening meal is great to assist the
digestive process and enhance your metabolism. It’s also a great way to spend quality time with a
family member or friend. Begin with an easy pace for a duration you chose. Then, you may want to
increase the duration or the intensity by walking faster. What if you mixed in some longer strides to
part of your walk? You chose the length, the longer you stride the more it looks like lunges. Maybe
you take a route that has stairs you could walk up and down. When you feel like it, try walking up
more than one stair at a time. Try walking up sideways or backwards to emphasize different muscles.
You can do the same thing with other activities as well. Remember, you are in charge and nobody is
giving you grief for not doing the activity perfectly. Think about the ways you use to challenge
yourself as a kid doing goofy things. You did those things to have fun. So use your imagination and
have some fun moving!
