Eatons Carter brand Model60554 hydrant pit valve is afamily of valves that includeslanyard, air or dual air/lanyard

operated pilot valves, with thelatter available with a defuelingoption.

The latest Model 60554hydrant pit valves meet allthe requirements of the 3rdedition of API/IP bulletin 1584,including the new breakawayand strength requirements.

The basic hydrant pit valveconsists of three basic parts, lower valve assembly, uppervalve assembly (or API outletadapter) and either the

standard pilot valve or oneof three patented pilot valveactuators (Model 64230,Model 64231 and Model64280), available as optionX. The lower valve assemblycontains an isolation valvewhich will allow the removaland servicing of the uppervalve assembly and the pilotvalve assembly while the pitvalve is still installed. (Seeservice manual SM60554for proper instructions). Theupper portion of all versions

of Model 60554 are nowfurnished with a replaceablepart that contains the interfacewith the hydrant coupler. Thisminimizes replacement partsexpense and allows for easyreplacement of the outletwearing surfaces.

An option is also available tobring the valve into compliancewith IP standards by addingthe appropriate 6 inch inletflange adapter. The outletconforms to the API bulletin1584 standard.

Model 60554 hydrant pit valveis designed to minimize thepropagation of surge pressureshocks into the upstreampiping system during closureof the valve.

    Installation Information

It is critical that the matingcoupler (shown at right) beconnected correctly and the pitlid be able to close completely. The hydrant valves installation

depth depends upon the brandof pit used. The thickness ofthe pit lid should be checkedto be sure that it will clear thehydrant valve before settingthe pit. The dimensions notedherein were correct for pitsmade in the United States atthe time of printing. Eaton cannot be responsible for changesin the pits. The dimensions, shown are for reference only.

    Figure AValve Open

    Figure BValve Closed

    Valve Operation

Figure A reflects a lanyardoperated pilot valve shown inthe open position. Figure Breflects an air operated pilot in aclosed position. The operation ofthe hydrant valve, whether thepilot is lanyard or air operated,is identical. The only differencesare in the operating mechanismthat supplies the power to openand close the pilot valve. In theair operated pilot, the closinglanyard and opening latching

mechanisms are replaced withan air operated piston as canbe seen in the cutaway on theprevious page. The dual air/lanyard operated pilot valve hasthe same normal air operatedpilot valve function with amanual (lanyard) over-ride of theair supply. (Option X works thesame as that shown in figure Bwith the air/fuel operated pistonbeing placed on the hose fromthe servicer.)

Servicing Valve Closed/Pilot Valve Open or Closed

The closing of the servicingvalve has the same affect asclosing the pilot valve. That is,the flow passage from the pistonchamber to the downstreamside of the piston is blocked. Thepiston chamber pressure beginsto equalize to the inlet pressure(P1) through the check valve.

The piston area is greater thanthe effective seal area, hencethe unbalance of forces causedby the equal pressure, plus thespring, will cause the valve tostay closed.

    Pilot Valve Open/Servicing Valve Open

The open pilot valve allowsthe continuous passagewayfrom the main piston chamberand from the closing controlorifice. The piston chamber isvented through an openingcontrol orifice and the openservicing valve to a point in thelower valve half. The pressure(P2) at this point is less thanthe inlet pressure (P1). Thepiston chamber pressure isalso maintained at P2 causingan unbalance of forces on thepiston. The inlet pressure forceis greater than the combinedpiston pressure force plus thespring force hence the valvewill open to allow flow. This isassuming that the outlet adapterpoppet in the upper valve halfhas been opened by a coupler.

The pilot poppet is maintained inthe open position by one of twomethods:

Lanyard operated pilot The pilot is opened bythe pull of the T handlelocated on the top of the

pilot valve. When it is pulledupward, the spring loadedlatch attached to the lanyardpivots to lock the pilot intothe open position.

Air operated pilot/dual air-lanyard pilot air pressureapplied to the pilot pistonwill maintain the pilot inthe open position until thepressure has been depleted(by release of deadman).

    Pilot Valve Closed/Servicing Valve Open

Pulling the lanyard, or depletingthe air supplied to theirrespective pilots, will allowthe spring loaded pilot poppetto close. This action blocksoff the venting of the pistonchamber to the lower pressurearea downstream. The pistonchamber begins to equalize tothe inlet pressure (P1) throughthe check valve.

The piston area is greater than

the effective seal area, hencethe unbalance of forces causedby the equal pressure plus thespring will cause the piston tobegin to close. As the pistonmoves toward the closedposition, the piston chambervolume increases and must befilled through the two in seriesorifices. The primary orifice is

considerably larger than thesecondary (slot). During theinitial and majority of the traveof the piston, the primaryorifice is fully exposed to theinlet pressure, hence the rateof closure is controlled by thisorifice.

When the piston moves farenough closed to cover theprimary orifice, the secondary(smaller) orifice begins to con

the closure rate. Hence thevalve begins to close relativelyrapidly and then slows downas it nears its closed position. The relative size and locationsof these two orifices allowsthe valve to close to provide aminimum of overshoot and yelimit the surge pressure shocon closing, and still maintaina closure rate in accordancewith applicable internationalspecifications.

On Model 60554J withdefueling option, the pilot valvis manually held closed by the

    thumb screw to allow defuelinflow.

The dual pilot valve optionsF or U perform under normalsituations the same as optionThe lanyard operation is only femergency situations where tair supply is not released by thdeadman valve.
