A meSSAGe From Hydro

Hydro’s mission statement speaks of its desire to contribute to the creation of a more viable society through the innovative development of products and services. During a plant closure process, a first reaction is to believe that this statement is as redundant as our employees - but it’s not.

Hydro never makes decisions to close plants lightly. Such a decision is only ever taken after every stone has been turned in the search for sufficient improvement to warrant continuing operations. In our turning of every stone, no-one could have asked for a stronger commitment from the Kurri Kurri workforce, which resulted in significant improvements to our cost base.

Sadly, the greater macro-economic forces (low LME price, strong Australian dollar) were against us. Part of Hydro’s contribution to ensuring that our society stays viable is this Jobs Market day. We are convinced that the skills and talents of our workforce are in demand locally, and that it is possible for our redundant employees to leave us feeling that they have been treated with dignity and respect, even through a closure process.
