Hydrogen IC Engine Conversion Project
Project Aim/Brief
• Design, build and implement a simple engine management system to allow an otherwise unmodified engine to run on hydrogen gas
– What does this mean?
– Solution to be as simple as possible
– Initial ideas too simple
Hydrogen and the ICE
• Benefits– Wide Flammability range, High diffusivity, High auto-ignition
temperature, Low ignition energy, High flame speed
• Problems– High flame speed, Pre-ignition, low density, small quenching distance
Engine Management• Closed Loop Control
– Sensors, processor, actuators
• Maps– Fuel and ignition
Sensors
• Opto-Slot– High speed, digital
• Heated O2
• MAP
• Accelerator– Analogue potentiometer or switch
operated
Actuators
• Injector– CNG injector, 3mm orifice
• Approx mean flow rate 3.25L/s at 1 BAR
• Ignition– Opto-isolated MOSFET – coil
Project Targets
• Sensors, actuator subsystems to be designed by week 12– Target Met
• Test/calibrate Sensors by week 12– Target not met due to delay in acquiring specialised parts
• On-the-fly reprogrammability– New target, close to completion
• Processor Hardware/Software– On Target
• System Testing/Evaluation– On Target assuming sensors/injector materialise soon
Week 13-20
• Attempt to complete system by end of week 14
• Verify stability and behaviour. Organise safety inspection by end of week 15
• Implement system on test engine, fine tune, gather results by end of week 20
• Easter - Write report, prepare oral presentation
