Kumar, DMD, MDSc, MSCourse Description: This course will provide an overview of the major highlights from the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions.
Learning Objectives:Participants of this course will be able to:• List the key changes in classification introduced in the 2017 classification and compare them with the 1999 classification• Name the new terminologies introduced in the 2017 classification • Interpret the multi-dimensional staging and grading system for periodontitis classification
Change Your Thoughts and ImproveYour OutcomesAn update on protocols, products and treatment options Tricia Osuna, RDH, BSDH, FAADH Course Description:Updated protocols assist us in determining our patient’s specific needs. As we move towards a more collaborative profession, we need to embrace these updates to identify those needs. We are presented with continuous challenges of new advances in products and technology and their use in dentistry and are in need information to determine when and how to add them into our armamentaria. As professionals providing health services, our perception of product use along with protocols needs to be discussed with our team as well as the interdisciplinary referrals we have. The process of care (assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation) requires a comprehension of protocols, products and treatment options and how they are to be utilized.
Learning Objectives:• Modify diagnosis assistance with the team and rationale for changes in assessment forms and diagnostic tools • Distinguish which new-to-market products should be brought into your practice • Integrate materials and products for a variety of uses in the dental office from infection control, dental hygiene therapy, oral cancer screening, patient communication and instrumentation • Develop effective communication with patients and assist in the business of the dental practice • Formulate strategies that incorporate efficiency in patient treatment for more productive scheduling
Periodontal-Systemic Links: The Case for Early Intervention of Periodontal DiseaseCasey Hein, BSDH, RDH, MBACourse Description: Are you under-diagnosing or waiting too long to diagnose periodontal disease? This course explores the significance of peri-odontal infection in increasing systemic inflammation, and provides a compelling rationale for early intervention of peri-odontal disease. Casey also discusses the role of the nonbacterial risk factors in amplifying the threat of periodontal disease, and reviews the components of a comprehensive periodontal evaluation, proposing a number of hurdles and conditioned assumptions that hijack diagnosis of periodontal disease. The course concludes by presenting an overview of the new clas-sification of periodontal diseases and discusses the continuum of care between dental hygienists and periodontists.
Learning Objectives:• Describe to patients how periodontal infection impacts overall health including increasing the risk for diabetic complications, coronary artery disease, stroke, pneumonia, and adverse pregnancy outcomes, among others. • Perform a comprehensive periodontal evaluation. • Identify the hurdles and conditioned assumptions that hijack the diagnosis of periodontal disease.• Identify patients in the earliest stages of periodontal disease.• Classify periodontal disease according to the framework established by the 2017 workshop of the American Academy of Periodontology and the European Federation of Periodontology.
