Derivation of meaning from social network analysis is an iterative process.

Define metrics
• Does this tell us what we need
to know?
• What else do we need to know?
• What new questions are raised?
Gather & process data
Refine metrics
• Known communities
(business units,
project teams)
• Discovered
communities
Relevant data sources

What benefits can you see?

Benefits of Social Network Analysis
Transparency
Say goodbye to the “secret society” mentality.
Democratic organisations are transparent and open with employees
about the financial health, strategy, and agenda of the organization.

Preventing Gluttony
Some individuals hoard projects.
This can wreak havoc on business continuity.

Benefits of Social Network Analysis
Preventing Isolation
Most important business groups are often most isolated (e.g.
business development, regional branches).
It is a challenge to give these individuals the same resources as the
main office.
It is important to business spirit that they feel part of the company.
Promoting Mentoring
If the company’s best resources do not collaborate with younger, up
and coming talent, how will there be any exchange of ideas?

Educating Employees about Collaboration

Company Structure
Communities do always match the inherent hierarchy.

Personal Collaboration Index
Knowledge about users can help to understand:
where in your organisation collaboration tools are used/not
used effectively
who does/does not use it.
In certain instances, you should perform some actions in order to
force people use collaboration tools and have all benefits from
them;
For example:
Education/training for departments where collaboration tools
underused.

Social Network Analysis
Social Network Analysis analyses relationships between employees,
offices, departments, etc. Based on that you can:
Figure out which units in your organisation play a major role and
which of them play a relatively minor role.
Determine if your employees are placed in the best roles that
they can have or if there will be more benefits for your business
if a particular employee would be moved to other role.
Make decisions about promotions in your company by
determining who the leaders are.

Social Network Analysis Principles
Social Network analysis theory is based on graphs theory and
examination of such parameters like Degree, Closeness and
Betweenness.
Hypersoft’s solution can analyse any form of electronic communication in
the enterprise; e.g.:
Instant messaging
Web & video conferencing
Document collaboration

Communities Creation
Communities can be automatically discovered using OmniAnalyser’s
community analysis tool.
© Hypersoft Information Systems, 2010
Communities
It is possible to see
graphical
representation of
relationship between
units inside a given
community (using
the Graph button).
© Hypersoft Information Systems, 2010
Communities Editing
Automatically discovered communities can be edited in order to
include/exclude some members who are out of your interest or were
discovered only occasionally.
After a community is saved, it is possible to use Social Network
reports for its analysis.

Community Degree
Community Degree is for analysis of number of contacts for
community members.
© Hypersoft Information Systems, 2010
Community Degree
This report provides data of mathematical analysis the links in a given
community:
InDegree ● number of incoming links to a given member.
OutDegree ● number of outgoing links from a given member.
Density ● ratio of number of existing links between
members to the total possible number of links
(if each member is directly connected to each
of the rest community members).
Drilldown to Community Details is available. There you can find
detailed information for each member of the community and make
conclusions about his participation in the community.

Community Details
From the detailed report
it is possible to see the
community with its links
in graphical form.

Community Closeness
Community Closeness report analyses such metrics as Closeness
and Farness:
InFarness ● in how many steps each unit from community
can reach some particular unit.
OutFarness ● in how many steps some particular unit can
reach all other members of community.
Closeness ● how close particular unit is to other members
of community. It is calculated based on
Farness values.

Community Betweenness
Betweenness value shows ratio between number of existing
geodesic paths inside community in which a particular business
unit/user participates to total number of paths in community.
In other words this value shows importance of a business
unit/user for the community or its power inside community.

Collaboration Tools: Who uses them?
Units can be:
• Business silos
• Geographic locations
• Project teams
• Age groups, other demographics
© Hypersoft Information Systems, 2010
Collaboration Tools: How much are they used? / Who
uses them?
You can understand how your employees use collab tools by analysing:
Meeting Presence
Meeting Joins
This helps to analyse how collaboration contributes to your business
and make appropriate changes if necessary based on real world data.
For example:
If a user spends too much time in real time communication.
If a user does not use real time communication enough.
If a user communicates with the right people for business
purposes.
