Aspen HYSYS and Aspen HYSYS Upstream allow
you to model hydraulics and flow assurance
to ensure pipeline reliability. Using these
tools, you have to consider single pipelines or
entire gas gathering networks. Flow assurance
features allow you to model key issues, suchas corrosion and erosion, hydrate formation,
and wax deposition. Additionally, Aspen Capital
Cost Estimator, part of AspenTech’s Economic
Evaluation suite, projects relative cost estimates
during the design process. Consider factors
including materials of construction, internal
lining and external coating, and terrain and
soil types crossed. Using the new Activated
Economics feature, it takes one click for the
modeler to generate preliminary estimates fromwithin Aspen HYSYS.
Gas Dehydration: Aspen HYSYS (Glycol Package)
Removal of water from natural gas and NGL is important in preventing equipment damage from freezing and fouling of
pipes. Typical gas dehydration requires the modeling of an absorber-stripper system with glycol absorbents, such as MEG,
TEG, and DEG. Having the best available physical property data is vital to ensuring that these systems can be modeled
and run optimally.
Aspen HYSYS features accurate glycol modeling (including MEG, TEG, and DEG). Founded on the Twu-Sim-Tassone
equation of state, the Aspen HYSYS glycol property package provides reliable methods for: phase equilibrium, surface
tension prediction, and liquid density prediction. Furthermore, you can easily convert simulations from steady state to
transient using Aspen HYSYS Dynamics, for
even greater model integrity.
Acid Gas Cleaning: Aspen
HYSYS Amines
H2S and CO
2 are corrosive and must also
be removed during the treatment of natural
gas to prevent equipment damage down
the line. This process, also referred to as“gas sweetening,” is best carried out using
aqueous amine absorbents. Similarly to
gas dehydration, it’s important to model
these systems accurately to ensure plant
operations make the grade.
Aspen HYSYS Amines offers an advanced thermodynamic electrolyte physical property model designed specifically for
acid gas cleaning. Aspen HYSYS Amines uses over 25 years of operational data to calculate non-equilibrium component
stage efficiencies for H2S and CO
2. Consider a wide variety of amines and blended amines using this package, which runs
entirely within Aspen HYSYS.

Natural Gas Cooling
NGLs can be condensed out of natural gas by cooling
the system extensively. Well designed and reliable heat
exchangers are necessary to remove the desired amount of
heat from the gas. Shell & Tube and Plate-Fin exchangers
are often selected to drive gases down to these extremely
low temperatures.
Aspen Exchanger Design & Rating (Aspen EDR) is a
powerful tool for the thermal and mechanical design of
many types of heat exchangers, including: Shell & Tube,
Plate, Plate Fin, Air Cooled, and Fired Heater. Aspen EDR
integrates conveniently with Aspen HYSYS, allowing you to
perform rigorous heat exchanger calculations from within
the process simulator. Quickly consider multiple heat
exchanger types, configurations, and even auto-size heat
exchangers within the full process flow sheet.
Compressor Operability
Compressors are vital to several areas of midstream
gas processing. Compression and turbo-expansion is a
popular alternative for cooling the gas to remove NGLs.
After all types of processing, the clean, natural gas product
must be compressed so that it can be shipped out. In
order to ensure efficient and safe design and operation
of compressor systems, it is important to model themdynamically.
Aspen HYSYS Dynamics is a powerful way to model complex compressor systems, generating more useful and reliable
results than steady state models alone. With dynamic simulation, it is possible to: implement and assess control schemes,
troubleshoot operations, conduct safety analyses, and model complex conditions such as startup and changes in
operating policy.
Carbon Management
With growing global concern for the environment, it is
increasingly important to effectively track and remove
greenhouse gases (GHGs) in facilities. If GHGs are
not managed properly, companies in many countries
face consequences such as “carbon taxes” from the
government. It is thus in the interest of companies to
carefully monitor and minimize their production of GHGs.
Aspen HYSYS features a built in greenhouse gas tracking
capability, which evaluates the carbon products that are generated and consumed by the process, from the reactants
and products to the fuel sources. Using Activated Energy Analysis, it is easier than ever to evaluate the GHGs present in a
process and compare them to a minimum target value.
