QUADRA ISLAND COMMUNITY CENTRE

The Underwater Harvesters Association invites you to an open house to learn about the proposed rezoning of water lot 1535 on Quadra Island. This water lot is located in Quathiaski Cove just to the north of the B.C. Packers Property. The water lot contains a dock with a ramp leading to a float. There are four sets of pilings (dolphins) which were used in the past as moorage for a barge containing a net loft. The purpose of the rezoning is to put a barge with a geoduck clam hatchery at the site.

Goin’ On A Lion HuntBy Rev. Jill Brocklehurst

Ernest Holmes, author of The Science of Mind says, “Faith is a great adventure.”

Are you familiar with the camp song, “We’re goin’ on a Lion Hunt”? Throughout the song the participants venture on a journey meeting many obstacles; tall grass, mud, rivers, trees ... “Can’t go over it, can’t go under it, can’t go around it, gotta go through it.” Off they go heading toward their destination.

How often do we set out on a journey of some form, only to find ourselves faced with a challenge and retreat to the familiar safe place, never to meet our goal? The nature of who we are is Infinite Potential, always in expansion, always moving forward. We can be part of the flow or we can try to hide and resist it. But we can’t hide. We are immersed in Spirit and our nature is expansion, blossoming in our own individual expression. The more we resist, the more we deny our true nature and things begin to break down, the most common effect is physical ailments.

In spring it is hard to deny the moving forth of all life. Flowers, bushes, trees ... all burst forth in an array of colours and new growth. Life is everywhere. The song of birds and insects fill the air and we await the hatching of eggs, baby ducks on the pond, lambs, calves, foals ...

You too are waiting to unfold. The Divine waits patiently to express by means of you. Nobody else can do you better. Pull out the map of your life and pin point your next adventure. Have faith. You are guided by love, inspired by truth, and your future will be what you make it. You can resist or surrender.

I can’t help but to notice in the Lion Hunt song how the participants conclude the only way forward is through the challenge. If fear is blocking the way, look it straight in the eyes, stand in faith and declare your truth. You are a magnificent creation of Spirit and this is your journey. The only barrier on your path is the one you create in mind. Why not have fun and enjoy the adventure of life?

Thanks For Beach Clean-up

The super effort by a growing number of islanders made Sierra Quadra‚s Annual Beach Clean-up on Sunday, April 24th, another success. We once again collected enough beach garbage to fill two large tandem dump trucks, and to load a pup trailer with tires and metal.

Many thanks to Seamar Industries (Nigel Phillips) and Upland Excavating Ltd. (Fred Dahlman) for the two large trucks (Upland provided the pup trailer), to BC Ferries for free passage, to the Regional District of Comox-Strathcona for free dumping privileges, and to BC Parks for the use of Rebecca Spit as our headquarters. Thanks as well to Heriot Bay Store and Quadra Foods for their generous contribution of juices, to Aroma for coffee, and to Quadra Credit Union for use of window space for promotion.

Thanks, too, to all those wonderful Quadra Island bakers who provided the sumptuous baked goodies as tasty rewards at collection headquarters. Appreciation to Burton Wohl, RTL Painting & Decorating (Richard Leicester), Bob Lasby and Carol Hornby who drove their pick-up trucks to bring in garbage from the remote collection sites.

But a special thanks to all those who collected and bagged garbage from our beaches.

Without your many hours of work, the Beach Clean-up would not have been a success. You were part of Earth Day events that now involve millions of Canadians and about half a billion people from nearly 200 countries.

Emergency Planning For Your CommunityCome out to this information meeting to

ensure that we understand your community needs when it comes to an emergency!

The Local Government Act requires that all communities within the Regional District have an Emergency Plan in place by December 31st, 2005.

The Regional District of Comox-Strathcona needs your help to ensure that a region-wide plan is developed that meets your community needs during a disaster. A regional emergency plan will benefit all communities in that the resources available to the community will be regionally coordinated and shared.

The Directors of the Regional District of Comox-Strathcona strongly support this initiative and urge everyone to become involved in identifying community needs in case of an emergency situation.

The purpose of this meeting is to solicit your ideas and input. Some information has already been gathered relating to the assessment of risks, hazards and inventory of emergency equipment for each area. We need to ensure that we have ALL the information needed to formulate a safe and effective strategy.

Emergency training workshops will be held at a future date - first the plan, then the training. The Emergency Planning meeting for your area will be held as follows:

Quadra Island Slo-Pitch is back!

A few changes have taken place on the slo-pitch board with Rick Maddison and Tucker Dinnes both stepping down from their respective positions as president and treasurer. The league would like to express their thanks and gratitude for the job Rick and Tucker have done over the last several years. The league would also like to welcome our new president Andrew brown as well as treasurer Maylene Inrig and tournament co-ordinator Casey Inrig.

The league is down to eight teams from the nine we had last year. Here’s what happened in each team’s opener.

Craig peterson hit three home runs for the Guns N’ Hoses in a losing cause as they fell to the Diamond Junkies 12-9. The Rowdies tripled up on the Misfits 15-5. The returning Dream Team hit four home runs to knock off Chris Rendalls Chuckers 13-7. And despite coming back from a ten run deficit the Gringos lost to the Keltics 13-12.

Here are the rest of the scores:

Diamond Junkies 28 - Misfits 5

Guns N’ Hoses 12 - Chuckers 7

Dream Team 20 - Keltics 18

Thank YouThe Quadra Island Trails Committee

would like to thank Dick Whittington of Quadra Island Forest Products for a donation of fir timbers that were used to replace a small bridge on the Shellalligan trail. This was the third bridge that we have replaced on Quadra’s trails this year and there are five more that need to be rebuilt by next spring; therefore donations of materials such as this are appreciated.

We also wish to thank the crew at Emcon Services on Quadra who have cleared and gravelled an area at the end of Wa-Wa-Kie Beach road at the Kay Dubois Trail, for parking.

Without the help of volunteers we would not be able to maintain our trails to such a high standard. If you think you can help in any way, please call Judy or Richard at 285-2922.

Hats off to Surge Narrows

Hats off to Surge Narrows community members and Jim Abram, the hardworking team who made it possible to access Surge Narrows by road! Those of us who lived on Read, Maurelle, the Rendezvous, or Sonora Islands in years past, who have pounded into horizontal rain and southeast gales to make it to appointments, salute you! Not only were you tireless in your efforts to raise necessary funds for the dock, but several of you spent a freezing, dark night raising the pilings. Now that I am only an occasional resident of the outer islands, I wasn’t there putting in my hours on the beach, but I know what it would have been like. Cold, wet teamwork. There would have been coffee, snacks, and comraderie.

Now when Surge Narrows residents need to get their children to the doctor or dentist, or simply make those necessary “town trips” they can safely moor their boat at the “north end” and drive into town. No preferential ferry tickets for these people, they are satisfied to get a safe connection to the road network. Chances are they will also bring along a chain saw and shovel, just in case a windfall or washout interrupts their trip. Hardy folks out there, and they deserve some recognition. I, for one, will be making a donation to the Surge Narrows Community Association to show my appreciation, knowing that I have an option if a storm slows my return to town after a weekend in the outer islands.

Rock and Roll royalty will be visiting Vancouver Island this summer as the legendary Bo Diddley takes the stage at Vancouver Island MusicFest, July 8-10 2005. The Bo Diddley beat is one of rock and rolls bedrock rhythms, showing up in the works of Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones and even pop-garage knock offs like the ‘Strangeloves’ 1965 hit “I Want Candy”. Diddley’s hypnotic rhythm attack and declamatory, boasting vocals stretched back as far as Africa for their roots, and looked as far into the future as rap.

Diddley’s trademark otherworldly vibrating, fuzzy guitar did much to expand the instruments power and range. But even more important, Bo’s bounce is fun and irresistibly rocking, with a wise cracking, jiving tone that epitomizes rock and roll! Diddley’s live performances were galvanizing, using his trademark square guitars and distorted amplification to produce new sounds that anticipated the innovations of 60’s guitarists like Jimi Hendrix.

In Great Britain, he was revered as a giant on the order of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. The Rolling Stones in particular borrowed extensively from Bo’s rhythm and attitude in their early days. Since then Bo has performed at two presidential inaugurations, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1987), toured Brazil and Japan (1997) and played with JJ Cale and Jerry Lee Lewis on a US tour. Now he’s coming to visit us on little ole’ Vancouver Island!

Also new on the 2005 roster is Celtic artist Karan Casey. Casey is one of the most instantly recognizable, alluring and original voices in world music. Her new recording, Distant Shore, is a collection of potent and beautiful Irish and contemporary ballads. Subtle and sensitive arrangements illuminate

Casey’s voice and illustrate just what she can do with her magical instrument.

One of the true glories in Irish music today, Karan learned her craft as a child growing up in Ballyduff Lower, County Waterford. Trained in both classical and traditional music she later developed her skills in jazz and pop singing in pub bands throughout Ireland. In 1994 she joined Seamus Egan and Winifred Horan as - Solas, which quickly became one of the most celebrated Irish bands in the US.

Early Bird passes for Vancouver Island MusicFest are available at a discounted rate and only until May the 1st! You can order tickets online by going the web at <http://www.islandmusicfest.com>www.islandmusicfest.com (“buy tickets now”) or by calling the Sid Theatre at 1-866-898-8499. Or stop by one of the many Vancouver Island ticket outlets including Vancouver Island Brewery in Victoria, Fascinating Rhythm in Nanaimo, Sound Advice in Port Alberni, Musicplant in Campbell River or in the Comox Valley at Orbitz Pizza, Sound Advice or I-Hos Gallery. Don’t risk missing out on another sell-out year with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Bill Frisell, David Lindley, Bo Diddley, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and more!

Area J Regional Director’s ReportWharf divestiture - Evans Bay, Read Island

My apologies for missing the last two issues of the Discovery Islander. I have had far too much going on in the way of meetings to be able to stop long enough to write a report. So I will try to bring you up to date with this report while I am on the ferry to Vancouver. I am on my way to meet with Transport Canada (T-C) about the inappropriate divestiture of the wharf at Evans Bay on Read Island without any consultation with the community at Surge Narrows, nor with the Regional District. They will then be looking at one or two other wharves within Area J and this is totally unacceptable to the effected communities and to me. Senior staff will be with me to apply as much pressure as we can to correct this situation. (post script - I have now had the meeting and can confirm that (T-C) did sell the wharf to the upland owner for a minimal amount and the owner is now applying to the Province for the water lease. I have asked the Province to refer this issue to the Surge Narrows Community Association and the APC for comment. More to follow)

The Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities annual meeting was held in Courtenay for three days at the beginning of the month. It was a great opportunity to meet with other local government representatives about common issues and to have some access to Ministers and their staff without going all the way to Victoria. It was also a great opportunity to lobby for funding for Area J projects!

Granite Bay and Surge Narrows Road end

Now that the wharf at the Surge Narrows road end has been completed I have been able to dedicate more time to working on securing the road access to Kannish Bay, via the Granite Bay road. This is another one of those issues that seems to have a life of its own and just keeps on going. I have finally gotten it down to the fine details and am gathering funding from other gov’t sources so that the fi nal piece of road that was not up to standard can be brought up to standard and then taken over by the Ministry of Transportation and Highways. Once that is accomplished, then the road maintenance crew will be able to take care of the road and keep it open for the many new residents that are starting to move in. When this is accomplished we will have both of our main arteries to the northern most points on the east and the west sides of the island (that can be accessed by road) preserved

for public access. This will not only be important to the many people that use those points for residential purposes, but also for the growing tourism and recreational sectors as well as the aquaculture industry. So this feels good! It is nice to actually realize a goal that has to this day just been words on paper in our Offi cial Community Plan (OCP).

Community AssociationI would like to thank the Quadra

Community Association for all of the work that has been put into the recommendations for a future bylaw review. When the review is actually taken up by the Regional District (RD), many of the comments and suggestions will be very helpful in developing a draft bylaw for community review and input. Having been through this process myself, I certainly can appreciate what a big job it was. Once again, my thanks!

Recycling Bins updateThe recycling depot (bin area) behind

Quadra Foods is going into the fi nal stages of development and will, unfortunately, need to be closed for a short period to facilitate the paving and fencing that needs to happen. The owners of the Plaza, Quadra Foods and the Cove Centre have all been very supportive in helping to bring this project to completion by giving their consent to the Regional District to continue providing space for the bins in this location. All other locations in the immediate area have been considered and this is the most effi cient and economical and will keep the cost of recycling to a minimum. Any further distance away from the ferry terminal and we would have to pay extra hours of waiting time every trip, for the truck and driver that haul the recyclables to Campbell River. I would like to acknowledge the incredible support that the senior staff at the Regional District has given this project for Quadra Islanders. During the closure, please try

to team up with someone to bring your recyclables to the depots in Campbell River. They are all run by the RD and will be glad to accept your “valuables”. Thanks for your patience and your overwhelming support for this continuing program.

RD staff reorganization One last item.... The staff reorganization

at the RD has been moving right along. We have been meeting often to try and improve the system so that the people that we serve, will in fact get the best service possible. Working with our new Chief Administrative Offi cer (CAO), Bob Long, I have been very involved in the strategic planning that was needed to move us into a more cooperative model internally and to refocus the entire organization on better “client service”. There will be a few new faces to replace some of the people that have left the RD and you will see a completely new structure within the Planning department that will hopefully serve all of our needs in a more professional and timely manner. I think you will all be pleased with the changes and hopefully they will prove to be “improvements”.

I will be away from May 3rd until May 19th, so any technical questions should be addressed to the RD at 1-800-331-6007. Please don’t leave messages on my voice mail.

I will see you when I am back and you can then get in touch with me at 285-3355, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am until 7:00 pm (no calls on weekends, please!). You can also contact me via fax at 285-3533 or you can email me anytime at [email protected]

Get out there and enjoy the spring weather... it could change at any moment!

Respectfully,

Jim Abram

In true Quadra fashion, a number of groups are co-producing events that would be too much for single groups to manage.

How many times have musical groups like U2 or touring musicals like Cats bypassed Quadra because a single non profit couldn’t handle the front money for such a show. This summer is going to be different. We kick off the Summer of Sizzle on July 4th when Amnesty International and the Garden Club present Gnome Chomsky and Michael Mooer doing their Manufacturing Discontent Comedy routine. George Bush’s Homeland Security assassin says “I can’t believe I missed them”, and Condoleezzaa Rice said about them, “It’s no coincidence that ‘Al’ ends the word liberal and starts the word Al Qaeda.” There is a dress code for this event. Shirts should be made of sack cloth and no one can wear Nikes.

On July 18th, you can see for yourself the power of co-operation when three groups (the School of Philosophy, the Community Kitchen people and the Chamber of Commerce) bring us Kellogs Gibran. He’ll be reading from his greatest book — The Profit. Here’s a couple of extracts:

Almost Daffy, the chosen and the beloved, who was down, lost his own way. He’d waited twelve years in the city of Quathiaski for his ship that was to return and bear him back to the isle of his birth. Then his ship comes in. No mention if it was a seiner. But before he goes, he imparts some wisdom....

And a merchant said, “Speak to us of Buying and Selling.” And he answered and said: To you the bank yields her fruit, and you shall not want if you but know how to fill your hands. It is in exchanging the labour of your workers that you shall find abundance and be satisfied. Yet unless the exchange be in another country, it will but lead some to unionize and others to malinger.

August brings even more toffee nosed, high brow, bull twaddle. Sierra Club and Friday Flicks team up to bring us an evening with Oscar Wild. Just out of Reading Gaol, Oscar is on the club circuit doing one man shows of some of his most famous eco-friendly plays. Lady Windmill’s fan club, the Impotence of Being Ecological, The picture of Dorian Green: any or all could be on the playbill.

Two weeks later, a big hit for pet owners when the Writers Group and the Dog and Cat Society bring us Omar Canine. His famous poem the Rubyiat (translated by Gerald Fitzedward) almost slid mercifully into obscurity but the backlash against the backlash has made it saleable again. For those of you who haven’t read it since you first tried to impress your girlfriend here are some extracts:

A bunch of bones underneath the boughA bowl of water, a stuffie to chew and thou Beside me barking in the backyardOh backyards were paradise enow

The roving dog pees, and, having peed, moves on: nor all your mongrel nor breedShall lure it back to cancel half its tripnor all your javex wash out the deed

Our final show is our biggest yet. On Labour Day, the Composting Toilet Society and the Quadra Communist Party present John Lenin. John’s been dead for awhile now so we thought the Board of the Cemetery would jump on board but they turned us down. Who was it that said death was the punch line for every joke ever told? I can’t remember but the point is that the cemetery board should maybe lighten up a bit. With low funds John can only do one song:

Imagine there’s no Liberals,It’s easy if you try,No Gordo to control us,He’s oh so very sly,Imagine all the peopleliving for the day...

You may say I’m a Greener, but I’m not the only one,I hope some day you’ll join us,And BC will live as Juan

John will stay around for awhile to answer questions. maybe we can find out who Juan is and why we should try to be like him.

Don’t Cave In!!Some recent concerns have surfaced

around some of the old and potentially dangerous mine sites on Quadra Island. These historic sites are an asset to our local community’s heritage and as a draw for tourists. However the mine shafts are aging and many of the structures and shafts are now posing a hazard to the unaware. The Inspector of Mines is proposing to fill one such shaft with gravel at great expense instead of following the local solution championed by Jim Abram which is to cap the shaft with a steel grill.

If you would like to add your support to this idea and preserve these mines as part of our island heritage contact: David Morgan, Inspector of Mines Tel: 250-952-0511 or email: [email protected]

Dogs Running LooseIt seems to us some dog owners on

Quadra Island have no regards for the well being of their dogs. We see a lot of dogs roaming the highways and by-ways of Quadra.

We hope people will have a little thought in the welfare of their animals and keep them secured at home.

Sincerely

Daphne Young

ThanksI would like thank everyone who made

my 50th birthday such a special event. In particular I would like to thank my partner David for everything he did to make my birthday so wonderful. Also thanks to Spriggs Florists for the beautiful flowers, Howling Dogs for the music and Cathie Armstrong for looking after the beverages.

We donated $250 to the Ruth Henkel family fund.

Thank you namasté

A Fortified Bird CountBack in Saskatchewan Sophie and I were

dedicated bird watchers. On a good day we might well record everything from a Chestnut-collared Longspur to a Black-throated Green Warbler. Anyway on this particular morning I recall we took our stand in a bunch of thick spruce overlooking the marsh at the north end of the lake. The winds were singularly chilling and quite uncharacteristically, I had the foresight to bring along a sizeable hip flask to keep us warm while we waited.

We didn’t have long to wait. Within minutes Sophie spotted a Solitary Rusty Dipper bobbing at the base of a minature falls to our left. Then, “wonder of wonders” way out over the water I picked out an unmistakable High-banked Tern.

This was rapidly becoming a birder’s dream. Right over on those rocks I had my initial encounter with a White-faced Cliff Scaler... possibly a new record for that species north of the 55th parallel. Just then some sixth sense caused Sophie to put down her glasses and look up into the tree above us... right into the eyes of her first Twittering Pipsqueek in full breeding plummage.

Our list grew rapidly from this point on: There was an elusive female Whistling Flyswatter, a very aggressive Tainted Upstart and, soaring high overhead, an Early-morning Brown Swallow. As if this weren’t enough for one outing, there followed two muddled Nitwits, an Open-mouthed Tattler and an unseasonal flock of Red-rumped Snowsliders. As the day warmed, our combined lists included a Red-eyed Bleerio, a Rosy-beaked Elbowbender and a Tufted Dowager, along with two accidentals: a Lesser Stench and the very rare Low-priced Petrol.

When we finally got home I checked through Sophie’s list. There was a Double-breasted Seersucker, an Iron-barred Booby Hatch, a Full-throated Shriek, an All-night Wingding, a Quick-shuttling Loom, a Silver-plated Sterling, a Crusted Muffin, a Morning Wobbler, a Crumpled Greenback, and judging by the male plummage, a Continual Grouse.

A final notation on the back of her list: one large Senile Coot!

Column #200!!!

A Stern Lecture

Since June of 1997 I have been writing a regular column for the Discovery Islander, and this one is number 200. I’ve been wracking

my brain to come up with something worthy of the occasion, but ended up with a blank page. Then I had the idea that I should write something about the Single Transferable Vote issue we will be deciding on May 17th, but found it too dry a subject. However, it is an important decision and I strongly encourage everyone to learn as much as they can. I found the Citizen’s Assembly website www.citizensassembly.bc.ca an excellent resource. But the subject of this column presented itself while reading some web-blogs. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, bloggers are people who set up their own website and write about stuff that interests them. I regularly read 10 to 20 bloggers, and the list constantly grows as they link me to other interesting blogs. I found the story that follows on a blog called Blast Radius http://blastradius.blogspot.com/2005/04/05/world-of-pain.html and found it so interesting that I would devote almost all of this space to it. This is a true story.

Professor Jasper Rine of the University of California – Berkeley gave a lecture on April 15, 2005 to his Biology 1A class. The lecture was videotaped, and the following is a transcript of the final minutes of the lecture. Imagine yourself as the subject of this…

“I have a message for one person in this audience - I’m sorry the rest of you have to sit through this. As you know, my computer was stolen in my last lecture. The thief apparently wanted to betray everybody’s trust, and was after the exam. The thief was smart not to plug the computer into the campus network, but the thief was not smart enough to do three things: he was

not smart enough to immediately remove Windows. I installed the same version of Windows on another computer - within fifteen minutes the people in Redmond Washington were very interested to know why it was that the same version of Windows was being signalled to them from two different computers. The thief also did not inactivate either the wireless card or the transponder that’s in that computer. Within about an hour, there was a signal from various places on campus that’s allowed us to track exactly where that computer went every time that it was turned on. I’m not particularly concerned about the computer. But the thief, who thought he was only stealing an exam, is presently - we think - is probably still in possession of three kinds of data, any one of which can send this man, this young boy, actually, to federal prison. Not a good place for a young boy to be. You are in possession of data from a hundred million dollar trial, sponsored by the NIH, for which I’m a consultant. This involves some of the largest companies on the planet, the NIH investigates these things through the FBI, they have been notified about this problem. You are in possession of trade secrets from a Fortune 1000 biotech company, the largest one in the country, which I consult for. The Federal Trade Communication is very in terested in th is . Federal Marshals are the people who handle that. You are in possession of proprietary data from a pre-public company planning an IPO. The Securities and Exchange Commission is very interested in this and I don’t even know what branch of law enforcement they use. Your academic career is about to come to an end. You are facing very serious charges, with a probability of very serious

time. At this point, there’s very little that anybody can do for you. One thing that you can do for yourself is to somehow prove that the integrity of the data which you possess has not been corrupted or copied. Ironically, I am the only person on the planet that can come to your aid, because I am the only person that can tell whether the data that was on that computer are still on that computer. You will have to find a way of hoping that if you’ve copied anything that you can prove you only have one copy of whatever was made. I am tied up all this afternoon; I am out of town all of next week. You have until 11:55 to return the computer, and whatever copies you’ve made, to my office, because I’m the only hope you’ve got of staying out of deeper trouble than you or any student I’ve ever known has ever been in.

I apologise to the rest of you for having to bring up this distasteful matter, but I will point out that we have a partial image of this person, we have two eyewitnesses, with the transponder data we’re going to get this person.”

The videotape of this lecture was posted on a website and was so popular it caused the server to crash. At the time of writing I have been unable to determine the fate of Prof. Rine’s laptop or the thief, but I suspect the puddle remaining in his chair after the lecture ended may have revealed the thief’s identity. I’ll be sure to pass on any updates I discover about the story. In the meantime, spring has finally arrived and I’m keeping busy working on our land – and enjoying the fabulous weather! At the same time I see how fast everything is drying up – please be careful with fire (if you can still burn by the time this is printed). I’ll be back in a couple weeks with #201, which I promise will be my words for the most part.

CAMPBELL RIVER - This year’s theme for Mental Health Awareness Week is “mind and body fitness.” The Canadian Mental Health Association is encouraging British Columbians to pay attention to nurturing both their mental and physical health.

The psychological benefits of an active lifestyle are well documented. Studies have shown that more moderate intensity programs, such as walking, tend to be more successful than vigorous physical activity programs. Positive, long-term outcomes have been demonstrated from regular fitness during leisure times – break it up into smaller time frames during the day and have fun! As well as contributing to our physical health, an active lifestyle can increase our resilience and ability to deal with stress.

For Mental Health Awareness Week, Campbell River Mental Health and Addiction Services has made a commitment to raise awareness of mind and body fitness. They will be offering the following community drop-in sessions, as noted in the calendar below. Business Profile

The Spa at April Point

Proprietors (L to R) Connie Besenyo, André Besenyo, and Linda Caley look forward to welcoming locals and visitors to The Spa at April Point. photo: Tanya Storr

Picture this: you’ve just reeled in a hefty 30-pound Chinook and

your arms and back are burning from the intense effort. Arriving back at April Point Resort, you head to the spa where an Aveda therapist soothes your sore muscles with an Elemental Nature massage. Sound good?

The Spa at April Point will open its doors on May 6, and although the 30-pounder is never a sure thing, massages and other relaxing spa treatments will be available seven days a week during the resort season.

“The spa will add another dimension to the resort. Our services will complement the other activities like fishing, kayaking, mountain biking, or adventure touring,” said André Besenyo, one of the partners in the new spa.

I met with André, his wife, Connie, and their business partner, Linda Caley, on the deck of the spa on April 18. André and Connie live in Victoria, where they own an Aveda Lifestyle Salon and Spa. Linda lives in Campbell River and will be the onsite manager for the Spa at April Point.

The partners financed the construction of the spa, and have a 30-year lease with Oak Bay Marine Group, owner of April Point Resort.

André, a hairdresser by trade, said the opportunity to open the new spa came about by networking.

“One of my clients works for Bob Wright, the president of Oak Bay Marine Group. I heard though her that Bob was interested in adding a spa to the guest services at Painter’s Lodge and April Point. I met with Bob and proposed situating the spa at April Point, over the reflection

pool,” André recounted.

Two years later, the new spa is set to open with a full range of services and products.

A s w e c h a t t e d , t h e construction crew was busy installing the flooring in the spa’s reception area and treatment rooms. Thanks to their hard work, the sound of table saws and hammers will soon be replaced by peaceful spa music.

“On May 6 there will be people walking around in there with just robes on, so we have a deadline to meet,” André quipped, adding that the builders are right on schedule and are doing an excellent job.

Employing people from the local community is important to the spa proprietors. Project manager Stuart Wallace utilized the talents of Quadratics Coastal Engineering and John Toelle Construction, among others, to build the spa. The estheticians and bodyworkers who will work in the spa were hired from Quadra, Campbell River, and Courtenay.

“We received resumes from as far away as Ontario, but we focused on hiring locally,” said Connie.

The 2,000 square-foot spa building, designed by Tracy Lamareaux, is suspended on concrete pilings above the resort’s reflection pool. With curving rooflines reminiscent of a Japanese temple and cedar shakes on the walls, the structure is a blend of East meets West.

“It’s a West Coast design with a little Asian flavour,” said André. “When the pool below is filled, it looks like the building is floating.”

A curved bridge over the pool leads to the front doors, which

are made of thick glass with a pressed bamboo design.

“We had the spa designed in accordance with Feng Shui principles,” said Connie. “It’s a place where you come to relax and feel good.”

Walking in the front doors, the first thing you see is a spectacular view of Discovery Passage through large picture windows. The reception area has an airy feel, and banana leaf chairs by the windows and on the deck invite spa visitors to savour the vista while enjoying a cup of tea.

Patrons will have their choice of an array of therapies available in the single’s or couple’s treatment rooms. Some of the highlights include the Caribbean Therapy Body Treatment (a dry exfoliation followed by a warm seaweed back and foot masque), the Aveda Stone Massage, and the Elemental Nature Manicure.

Connie and André also recommended the Aroma H y d ro t h e r a p y Tu b w i t h Chromatherapy (as well as a 20-minute soak in an air-jetted tub, this treatment includes a

light and colour therapy “to rebalance and rejuvenate the body and spirit”).

Spa packages, ranging from 3.25 to 6 hours, offer a combination of treatments. The “Air Package” includes a 60-minute facial, a revitalizing eye treatment, and a manicure and pedicure.

André explained that the spa is an Aveda Concept Spa, carrying only the Aveda product line.

“Aveda is an environmentally conscious company that has been in business since 1976. Estee Lauder bought Aveda five years ago, and the company continues to conform to the highest standards for its products,” André said.

These standards include using all natural ingredients, with no artificial chemicals and no animal testing. The company has relationships with indigenous peoples around the world who harvest the ingredients used in their products.

“Sometimes we can’t get a particular product because the flower used to make it is currently unavailable,” André.

Connie pointed out that the demand for spa treatments has skyrocketed. The spa sector is currently ranked as the fastest growing service business in North America, with a particularly strong showing on the West Coast.

“People work more and more these days, and they want to treat themselves to feel good. We are very happy and thankful to have this partnership with Oak Bay Marine Group, so that we can offer Aveda spa treatments and products at April Point Resort.”The Spa at April Point opens on May 6. Local residents will receive an ongoing 25% discount on spa services. Once the spa opens, residents and visitors are welcome to drop by for a tour.

For more information, call André at 250-514-6277 or the spa at 285-2668 after May 6. Visit the website at www.aprilpoint.com/aveda-spa
