nu:life - The offi cial voice of Northumbria Students’ Union

nu:life is the only offi cial Northumbria Students’ Union publication. Soon to be replacing your regular copy of ‘Heat’ magazine, it’s a handy A5 glossy with features covering everything from topical issues such as Course Fees and binge drinking, to sports to horoscopes. The magazine is written entirely by student volunteers and edited by Holly Seabrook the Elected Offi cer for Communications and Involvement. It is published monthly and distributed to all Northumbria Halls of residence, as well as from various sites around campus.

We are always looking for volunteers to help out and contribute to the magazine and there is no experience required. It’s a great opportunity to air some of your views and interests and also to expand your CV.

NU:TV is your very own television station, written, recorded, edited and broadcast by students. It is only in its second year but already it has been nationally recognised at the National Student Television Awards - NaSTA!

Course RepsOur “troops on the ground” that make Northumbria a better place to learn - Course Reps are the volunteers that make sure your course is the best it possibly can be, working with lecturers to solve the day-to-day issues that come up, and even shaping the curriculum on your course for the next generation.

Not only does being part of the 1300-strong army of Course Rep give you voice, infl uence and the perfect way to meet your course mates - it also proves you’re a leader, with good time management, organisational and presentation skills. And our training programme for Course Reps, including the annual Course Rep Conference, means we’ll make sure you benefi t personally from every minute of your volunteering.

School RepsSchool Reps truly are the pride of the Students’ Union. Up to fi ve students from each School mentor Course Reps, keep on top of what’s going on across the School, and tackle the big issues with the hard-hitters - the Associate Deans and Directors who take the big decisions.

All kinds of students - not just your ‘typical’ natural leaders - can make good School Reps: students who like the sound of their own voice and can motivate Course Reps, intellectual students with an eye for detail, students who are terrifi ed of public speaking but are brilliant at putting their thoughts on paper. Post Graduate Research (PGR) RepsAspiring academics and serious professionals on PGR programmes (PhD, MPhil and Professional Doctorate) are sometimes part-time lecturers too - but in our eyes, a PGR student is a student fi rst and foremost. One PGR Rep in each School volunteers to champion the research student experience - making sure you have the resources, workspace and research environment to write the best possible thesis. And for Post Graduate Taught (PGT) students:If you’ve made it through an Undergraduate degree and are now on a Masters or equivalent-level programme (PGCE, BPTC, LPC, PGDip and so on) - you probably have all the skills we’re looking for in a Course Rep and School Rep!

Halls RepsFirst time away from home, in a strange city or coming to the UK for the fi rst time - all or some of those things apply to you? University accommodation is key to helping you settle in. Making sure that Northumbria’s halls offer the best food, the securest place to keep your belongings and the most environmentally-friendly buildings are our team of Halls Reps – keeping abreast of students’ issues on the ground and working with Halls management to solve them.

Community RepsToday University halls, tomorrow the City Council - Community Reps have the passion and the energy not only to make Northumbria a better place to study, but Newcastle upon Tyne a better city to live in. Challenging the City Council on student housing policy, lobbying for neighbourhood facilities such as street lighting and recycling facilities - if you’ve got a feel for your neighbourhood and want to keep it as student-friendly as possible, the Community Rep role could be for you.

There are very few opportunities in life to be the voice of your community to the powers that be and to enhance your analytical skills and negotiation technique, while meeting a diverse range of people and seeing real changes physically happening around you. If Student Council says so, then the Union supports it. Fairtrade policy? Student Council’s say-so. No platform to racist and fascist groups? Student Council’s say-so. Campaign to challenge images of students as binge drinkers? Student Council’s say-so too!

Any student can collect a petition of 50 signatures to put a motion to the Student Councillors to vote on (which we can help you write to make sure it’s in the correct format), and – if it’s ‘passed’ as policy - it’s binding on the Union, which means that the Union has to act on it.

And if you want to be one of the 35 key decision-makers, you can get yourself elected as a Student Councillor representing a constituency – nearly every Rep listed in these pages has a space at Student Council reserved for them to nominate to.

We hold two big elections each year, one in November and one in March. NUS Conference Elections:NUS conference is the Nation Union of Students’ yearly conference and happens in April each year. Each union brings a number of students as voting members of conference fl oor. It is the place that NUS sets its policy and objectives for the year ahead and you, the elected students get to choose on what their priorities should be.

Sabbatical Elections 2012The Students’ Union is run by students for students, and if you want to make a big change and earn £16,000 then you should run in the Sabbatical elections.

There are fi ve Paid Sabbatical Offi cer roles to run for:• President (Currently Jo Rhodes)• Vice President Academic Affairs (Currently Kate Bradshaw)• Vice President Communications & Involvement (Currently Holly Seabrook)• Vice President Activities & Development (Currently Andrew Cheung)• Vice President Welfare & Equality (Currently Hannah Horne)

These students work year long to improve your university experience and making change at Union and University level.

As well as electing your Sabbatical Offi cers in March you also elect your Equality Reps (page 23) and your Lay Student councillors.

Lay Student Councillors These Reps represent you at Student Council as well as being part time offi cers assisting the Sabbatical Offi cers with projects, and working on their own priority campaigns.

You can run for any one of the Sabbatical, Lay or Equality Rep positions, the only requirement is that you are a current Northumbria Student and a continuing student for the Lay and Equality Rep Positions, so what’s stopping you?

Your Students’ union is about nothing if not representation, and representation is nothing without campaigns - campaigns that raise awareness of issues facing students, and campaigns to change things for the better and challenge the status quo.

The impact of some of our campaigns is felt far and wide to this day - it’s our involvement in campaigns that put Northumbria amongst the best places to study in the UK and sealed the title of NUS Students’ Union of the Year 2011 for us!

No to Hidden FeesOver 2000 students said No to Hidden Fees through our massive postcard campaign and photo-petition, capturing images of 800+ students declaring how much their university education is really costing them beyond the headline fi gure - core texts, fi eld trips, lab coats, software, and equipment and so on. With tuition fees about to treble to £8500 in September 2012, we’ve made the case for all-inclusive tuition fee pricing where possible, allowing UK undergraduates to claim the full amount as a student loan - and have persuaded the University that this is the right direction to move in, with a signed commitment to eliminate ‘hidden fees’ for good.

Anonymous Marking: Mark My Words Not My NameWith the Sabbatical Offi cers, our Course and School Reps have lobbied the University at every level to implement anonymous marking since September 2010 - and, after successful pilots in every School, we’re proud that this will be rolled out in 2011/12 across the board (where feasible), delivering confi dence in the marking process to every student at Northumbria.

This year, look out for:Education Policy 2011-14: Our Vision of an Outstanding University EducationWe’ve involved over 1000 students, and looked at data for several thousand more, in fi nding out what Northumbria students would see as an outstanding university education. Our mission is to make sure we get there by 2014, and our plan to get us there is the Education Policy 2011-14.
