LESSON 4: I’M THANKFUL THAT WE CAN TALK TO GOD. Bible Reference: 1 Samuel 1:1-2:11, 18-19: 3:1-19

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

The children will:

.Know that say thank You God.

.Be grateful to God because He hears their prayers.

Show their gratitude towards God through worship.

INTRODUCTION:

Today we are learning that we should be thankful because we can talk to God and he hears us.

READ: 1 Samuel 1:1-2-2:11, 2:18-19; 3:1-19 with your child from the Bible. The Bible story we read tells us that God gave Hannah a baby boy. God gave Hannah a baby boy. Hannah named him Samuel, then she thanked God for the baby. (Use your child’s doll or teddy bear as a prop. Have your child pat the doll/teddy bear to remind us of Baby Samuel, touch the hair, and say, “Thank you, God.”) Hannah knew that we can talk to God. God heard and answered Hannah’s prayers by giving her baby Samuel to love. Samuel grew into a good little boy. Hannah remembered her promise that Samuel would serve God. So Hannah took Samuel to the temple/church and knocked on the door. Let’s play a fun game. (Lead your child in the following action rhyme. On the last line encourage hop up together. Repeat the rhyme a few times.)

Teacher: Knock, knock! (Knock on a pretend door in the air)

Children: Who’s there? (Put both hands out on shoulder length as if asking a question)

Children: It’s.... (Have the children shout their names as they hop up.)

Hannah knocked at the temple. (Pretend to knock on a door) Who came to the door? Eli, the priest! Samuel went to live in the temple with Eli and learn how to serve God. One night, Eli and Samuel were asleep in the temple. Samuel heard someone call his name. (Whisper:) Samuel! Samuel!

Samuel hopped up and ran to Eli. Was Eli calling Samuel? No, it wasn’t Eli. Who talked to Samuel? God talked to Samuel! And just as Han-nah talked to God, we can talk to God too. Let’s all pretend we’re Samuel. Lie down and pretend to sleep. When you hear your name, and I tap you, sit up. (Whisper your child’s name as you gently tap him or her and every other family member. Continue until everyone is sitting up) Three times Samuel tried to sleep, and three times God called his name. Hannah talked to God in a prayer. We can talk to God in a song and remember that God talked to Samuel too.

SONG: Lead the children in singing the following song to the tune of “Jesus Loves Me”. (Do the motions in parentheses as you sing).

We can talk to God each day (Actions: Point upward) When we fold our hands and pray (Fold Hands) God will hear each word we say (Cup hands beside ears) We have be learning that we can talk to God. And just like Hannah, we can thank God in a special way for hearing us.

Let us sing our memory verse together. Every night and every day (Close eyes, then open them) We talk to God (X3) (Touch fingers to lips, then point upward.) Repeat 3 times Each time we start to pray (Fold hands)

MEMORY VERSE: Don’t worry about anything. No matter what happens, tell God about everything. Ask and pray, and

give thanks to Him. - Philippians 4:6

PRAY: Dear God, thank You for the snack we are about to eat. Thank You for listening to us when we talk to You in prayer and when we sing. Amen!

SPECIAL PARADE (Optional): Let’s thank God with a special parade. We will sing, march, jump, clap, wave our hands, hop and dance around the room to thank God for all He has done for us. (Lead your child in marching around the room and vary the activities as you sing the “We can talk to God” song or to children’s music you may have. Give an opportunity to the children to lead the train in follow-the-leader style. – IF you have musical instruments, use them too.) What a wonderful parade of thanks! I know that God heard us singing and marching. It’s nice to be thankful that we can talk to God. Now let’s march to our seats.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

.Bible

.Craft

.Crayons

.Instruments (optional)
