set off nonessential clauses and nonessential participial phrases.
A nonessential clause or participial phrase is one containing
information that isnt needed to understand the main idea of the
sentence.

snapping turtle. That scarf, which is real silk, was made in India.
Dont get these confused with essential phrases or clauses- one that
cannot be left out without changing the meaning of the sentence.
Essential clauses and phrases are not set off by commas. Example: A

Chinese American woman.
