“I can’t remember!?”

How many times have you asked

students to tell you something

about their reading, only to hear…

Hold your students accountable by teaching them how to STOP and THINK!

Is a gecko an animal on an insurance

commercial? Well, yes, but a gecko is

interesting for more reasons than just its

television debut. A gecko is a type of lizard

that has learned to adapt to almost any

environment.

Geckos have physical features that help them

survive. They can camouflage themselves to

hide from predators, and did you know that

geckos can actually shed their tails if a

predator grabs them?

The first American woman in space was Sally

Ride. Sally was also the youngest American

astronaut to travel to space at the age of 32.

Sally joined NASA in 1978 and went to space in

1983.

After traveling to space, Ride became a

professor of physics. She also founded and

led two programs for middle school students

interested in learning about space. Sally

wrote 7 books aimed at children in an effort

to encourage future scientists.

Did you know the first Ipod was invented before

you were born, in the year 2001? The first Ipod

was created by a company called Apple, Inc.

Ipod sales really picked up speed after 2004

and it has been ungraded several times since

2001.

In 2007, Apple sold its one-hundred millionth Ipod,

making it the biggest selling digital device of all

time. It continues to sell millions today. Ipod

complaints relate to the length of the battery

charge, and the durability of the hard drive.

Did you know that Post-it notes, or sticky notes,

came about by accident? A man named Dr.

Spencer Silver was in charge at a company called

3M for coming up with a strong sticky adhesive. He

accidentally came up with a removable sticky

adhesive that was not very strong.

A friend suggested using it on the back of his

bookmark. After years of trial and error, 3M

launched it under the name, “post-it notes” and

sales took off. Another interesting point is that

the yellow color of the note was also an accident.

The team simply used leftover yellow paper!

Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar

system. It is so big that all of the other

planets could actually fit inside it. Jupiter has

bands of cloud that almost look like striped

pajamas. Jupiter is made of gas but has a

solid core, made of rock.

There is a giant storm on Jupiter called the

Great Red Spot. It produces enormous

winds and has been happening for over 300

years. Did you know that Jupiter also has 17

moons and each of these vary in size.

Who was Thomas Jefferson? Thomas

Jefferson was one of the founding fathers

of our country and the author of the

Declaration of Independence in 1776. The

signing of this document symbolized our

independence from England’s control.

Thomas Jefferson was also the third

president of the United States. He was very

A butterfly starts as a tiny seed. First, a female

butterfly lays hundreds of tiny eggs that attach to

a leaf. Inside each egg is a small caterpillar, or

larva. Most eggs do not survive.

The caterpillar eats from the shell to survive, and

after 4 days, the caterpillar hatches. It continues

to eat from its shell and soon, the caterpillar begins

to shed its skin. This is called molting. The caterpillar

continues to eat and then forms a cocoon, or

chrysalis. The chrysalis starts out as a soft shell

but quickly becomes hard and in about 2 weeks, the

caterpillar changes to a butterfly!

Cheetahs are big cats and are known for

their black spots and their fast legs. Cheetahs

can run up to 64 miles per hour. Cheetahs live

mainly in Africa. They like large open

grasslands where they can run fast and

catch their prey.

Cheetahs are carnivores as they eat mainly

meat. They hunt gazelles, warthogs,

wildebeest, hares and birds. They catch their

prey by running towards the prey, knocking

them over, and attacking them.

One of the most popular Olympic sports for

spectators to watch is women’s gymnastics.

The United States has won several gold medals

in women’s gymnastics. The US women’s team

won team gold in 1992 and 2012.

In 2012, the US team won the team all around

and were called the “Fierce Five,” referring to

the five gymnasts who were all Olympic first

timers. Also in 2012, two of the five, Gabby

Douglas and Aly Raisman took home individual

gold medals.

What is an oviparous animal? An oviparous

animal is an animal that hatches out of an

egg, unlike mammals which are born from

their mother’s womb. Examples of

oviparous animals include snakes, frogs, fish,

and chickens.

Two mammals that are oviparous are the

duckbill platypus and the spiny anteater.

Different oviparous animals lay different

kinds of eggs. They also lay different

amounts of eggs at one time.

Have you ever heard of an avalanche? An

avalanche is when a massive slab of snow

and ice breaks apart from the mountain and

rolls downhill. An avalanche can travel as

fast as 200 mph.

An avalanche can be deadly as it can carry

or bury people in its way. There are certain

things that can set off an avalanche in

addition to the snow becoming too heavy.

An avalanche can be set off by a skier or

even a loud noise.

Is that a frog or a toad? Sometimes, we

get confused. Frogs and toads are both

amphibians. They both have large eyes, no

tail, and powerful back legs. They both

produce eggs that hatch into tadpoles

which later become frogs or toads.

They are however, different in many ways.

Toads have bumpy skin, but a frog’s skin is

smooth. Toads are also slower than frogs,

and in some warmer regions, frogs live in

trees.

At the end of March, the transition from winter to

spring begins. In spring, there are many physical

changes that we can see. Buds begin to grow on

the trees, and these buds will turn into leaves and

flowers. Flower bulbs begin to sprout. The air

gets a little warmer.

You may notice the grass becomes bright green

again, and you might hear more birds chirping

early in the morning. Spring is the time many

animals are born. Baby birds hatch early in the

spring. Later in the spring, you will see

caterpillars that turn into butterflies.

A volcano is an opening in the earth’s

surface from which gas, ash and magma

can pour out if the volcano is active. Not all

volcanoes erupt, or are what we call “active.”

Magma is the hot liquid rock known as lava

that comes out of the volcano.

Volcanoes form at “tectonic plates.” These

are meeting points of sections of the earth.

The biggest active volcano is located in

Hawaii. It is called Mauna Loa. Mauna Loa’s

most recent eruption occurred in 1984.
