    Filming:

We shot the final stick and stone scenes which was Alex and

Sam and Lewis and I. For Alex and SAMs I was the

documentary taker and I got some really nice shots and also

did some documenting. I thought the outside feel was really

nice. Lewis took indicative as the first AD. I felt that Sam

looked really into it however I felt Alex looked a little cold

and wooden in some shots but it's also because she was ill. It

had a really nice feel to the scene. There were more problems

with the background sound when the scene was set outside

and we had to cut and retake because of tractors.

When it came to filming mine and Lewis's scene, it was really

fun; I wanted to have more fun on this shoot because I felt

the script was learning more towards and open interpretation

rather than the struck feel the other scripts have given o!. I

liked the costume with the tights and the coat and bag which

for me really added to the scene. When we rehearsed Gavin's

input into the scene really made me excited to shoot and

when we did I wasn't even aware of the crew or cameras I was

just having fun. Although looking back I felt we could have

not rushed the moment as much as we did and took a

moment to sink it in and give ourselves suspension to decliner

the dialogue and reactions as well. I felt that it had a good feel

to it and taking the more comical route was something I liked

exploring and made it di!erent and I'm happy that I took

these risks for the performance. I wasn't sure whether it was

going to be too theatrical or not but I felt that I tired to bring

the heightened acting down more to make the scenario more

believe able. I had fun and liked the scene and liked workingwith Lewis who was equally on the same page.

    I DON'T

    BELIEVE YOUMy StrengthsTeam work

I think I've worked really well

    within the company this week,

    communicating as the crew, I

    made sure as the director

everyone knew my vision and as

    first AD everyone was fine

    Analytical

    I believe when watching the

rushes back I have had a great

    eye for detail looking more

    into the locations and lighting

and shots and sound but also

    the continuity.

    Assertive

This week when I was director

and first AD I feel like compared

to before when I have done these

roles I have not known the

    responsibilities but I feel know

    I'm more knowledgeable on what

the first AD's role is I can now be

    more assertive in my vision.

Originally the place I thought would be best to film was the

black room, because it was a dark setting like nighttime to go

with the robbery. Gavin had a better idea to shoot outside the

stage mangers o"ce and to go into a tiny whole so we were

hiding and squished, I think the dark corridor helped and

looked like we broke into somewhere and the tiny space really

make the scene had energy and

life. The idea for the scene

was very active and comical so

    with Lewis and me being

    di!erent sizes and height

    finding a small space really

    helped the comedy.

    Scene. Actors. Role

    1 Charley // Connor.

Grainy, not great light. Sounds really sharp. Joggy camera.

Charley believe able. Cocky voices? Connor darting his eyes.

Camera bags in the shot.the sound is better later third take.

But quiet. Connor is not in it. Nice improvised at the end.

Should have said pick up from first AD Harriet. Charley was

nice performance when he played it sinister smiling.

    2. Daniella // LEVI

Daniella looked at the camera. The boom kept making noises,

sound not great. Really joggy camera work. Daniella corpsed

at the end of the scene. Nice shot walking through the

corridor. No action on take two. Nice take two. See

reflections in the window. Not in focus take three. Sound not

great take four, not in focus. Take five shadow on the face of

Daniella. The sound is very sharp and loud take six.

    3. Erol // Amber. White balance //

    third AD

Nice reactions from Amber, bit wooden. Noise on boom.

Take two alright. The sound is really quiet. Camera not always

keeping actors in the centre. Big hand gesture from Amber,

not natural. Take five sounds better but still making noises,

boom in shoot all the time. Sounds better take six, shadow of

    boom on Amber.

    My Weaknesses

    Time

    I haven't had a lot of time

this week to do some otherpieces of work I would have

    liked, such as doing the

story boards of our vision of

editing. I think I could use

    some of my time more

    wisely. work better under

    pressure and know the

    responsibilities that come

    with that, otherwise you run

    over time and it costs

    money

    Make Up

When I've been make up I

    haven't been properly doing

    the job because I always

    think the make up looks

    fine because I don't know

    what I'm looking for, I

    think when there is more

    costume and hair styles

    there would be more to

look out for. I need to treat

    each job with the same

    enthusiastic approach

    Loyalties

    This week there was a

    problem in the company

    with some people being

    absent to go and get

    monologues and I was the

    person who told and after

    m friends we o!with me.

Sound really quite. Shadow under the eyes. Really quite, light not great. Harriet nice performance.

Harriet looked towards the camera. Nice camera work not wobbly

. Lewis forgetting his lines. Boom shadow on Lewis. Take four, Lewis still forgetting lines. Nice

reaction from Harriet but then went unrealistic.

    5. Alex // Sam. Documentary

Nice camera work. Nice reaction in Alex's eyes. Take two, sound bit too sharp. Take three, camera

joggy. Nice performance from Sam, relaxed. Background noise of people. Take five, camera joggy. Take

    six.

    6. Julia // Lewis. Actor

Reflection in the window. Comical, theatrical but works for the comedic scene. Take three look like

I'm looking at the camera. Hair flicked into the boom. Take four, the awkward moment was comical.

    Nice reacting.

    Communication

We have been really working as a

team with the crew and I feel like

the show runs better with the

people who are the strongest at

    each department because they are

    the quickest and costs less.

    Descriptive

As artists I feel we are

being more descriptive onwhat shots we want and

    Improvements

    All the company I believe

    have made improvements in

    believable and also know

    the crew and understanding

    Independence

    some people in the

company relied on the firstAD to give them the vision

    like Connor so the casting

    and roles I think weren't

    right in some groups and

    being an artist you should

always have a vision and I

As a company I think we need

    Professionalism

I feel that as the crew and the

actors we should pre know the

lines and the vision of what we

want to do. I feel like we need tobe more professional as well

when we don't have gavin with

us and I think Lewis is the worst

    culprit of this.

Doing Harriet and Connor's scene when I was continuity was really hard because I had to really have

an eye for detail but when watching it back on the camera screen was completely di!erent to

watching it in real life. You can see some small details amplified and sometimes because of the small

location you can't just hang around so I couldn't see the other half of the bodies. I found it interesting

to be continuity because there was a lot of details and I felt that I really tuned and focused in on the

routine, I also got the right slate, take and scene and I got the time every time but once. I thought the

locations were a good choice for the scene, I liked the idea of Daniel as an extra coming out of the

locker room as though it's a toilet. I liked the business of getting stu!out of the locker because it

looked so natural. Gavin said it was also up to continuity if something on set isn't in the right place we

have to go and fix it ourselves.

When being the actor for this scene I found it really hard to make a cuppa tea and the. Not fiddle

with it because I would but I didn't want to make noise. I felt that I kept getting the words wrong and

my mind was somewhere else and I started getting nervous and under pressure so my eyes were

blinking a lot and made me look weak when I thought my character was a strong one. I personally

didn't believe my performance and at the beginning we established I was the one ringing but I

thought I was the one answering the phone so it changed the whole situation for me; I felt very

thrown. I thought Alex's place of waking up whilst she was sleeping could have been taken to the

extreme where she turned on the light and woke up because I think waking up can be so acted

    sometimes.

When directing I knew what i wanted but it was really hard working to a time limit, it was good to get

stu!done but when I said lets speed it up everyone still see ed to be going the same speed but I know

  • 8/9/2019 I Don't Believe You

    7/14

    A Film in 5 Minutes 10th January 2015

we aren't professionals. The more complex shots with SAMs character I felt needed more time

because there were more shots and I didn't think Lewis's compared to this would take as long; we only

had 10 minutes to shoot Lewis's character and I felt like I liked the evaluator because the person being

most confrontational was in a confined space by theirselves which is what I wanted to achieve.

Unfortunately due to time we didn't get all the shots I would have wanted. I felt like I was a good

director because I knew what I wanted so it was easy to talk everyone through it. I felt the

relationships I found more connections were the DOP and First AD with the director. When

shooting sam's more complex scene I wanted the person who was being confronted to be in a warm

situation with friends and then go outside to a climate changed atmosphere where it was cold and

spacious to show the di!erence. I felt these shots had pros and cons in the fact it was outside so the

sound wasn't the clearest, the canteen could have background noise. With the elevator there were

loads of entrances and exits for ransoms to walk through so we needed a lot more crew to control the

noise. Also being in a small space we couldn't get all of the crew in so not everyone could do their jobs.

I liked the shots we took and I felt that my clear vision communicating with the crew was clear and

    e"cient.

Nice performance but unrealistic sense rio

    Mathew animated and dynamic performance

    Slightly over animated with hands

    Leonardo very expressive facially

Reactions natural and smooth believe able

Talking in di!erent language hard to keep up with

Al panco's performance is great still capturvating

Other actor too animated not believe able a lot of facial movement

    He casually walks out

You can see the intense look in his eyes and see what he is thinking

Not for theatre, could be more of a cluedo

Scene suits film more than theatre

    Sam:

    #grand Torino

Not believed lie acting from the other actors

Clint east wood has a nice gravel voice

    Still performance

    Dark humour Funny

Tension didn't build up in the scene due to music and reactions

More film camera performance because it's still and in the moment

Not so theatrical for theatre but the story line could be,

    #dead poets society

Robin Williams is very animated for his performance

Toby as the character is very nervous and his performance as an actor is believeable

    Love the situation

    Camera angles and the motion

Both actors working together to decliner tension in the scene and broke it at the end

Could be potentially a great theatre show

Haven't seen the whole film but just from that one scene

Animated characters could be shown in theatre.

    Make up

Scene 5 charley and Daniella // Levi and Amber

    Camera operator

Scene 6: Erol and Lewis // Daniella and charley

    First AD

I thought that the locations for Levi and ambers scene were too similar in terms of they are big and

bright lit locations because they have the same feel with what situations the characters we in. The pub

feel came across more soap opera like. I didn't know I was props as well as make up this wasn't made

clear to me. I thought the takes ran smoothly, it wasn't clear to me who was the first AD and it was all

very rushed. I was filming documentary at this time so I was concentrating on that as well.

When it came to charley's scene in the car, I was really happy to be elected as camera operator

because I haven't done this since the first shot we ever took and I really wanted to test out what I've

learnt so far. I thought I really went to the extreme with getting into small spaces as I tall person and

took a risk with the shot we were taking. I think the panning in shoot was smooth and better to when

I've previously done it as well, I feel it's

because I'm more knowledgeable for how to

manipulate the tripod. I felt that it was great to

get more quirky shots of Daniella with the

BCU because we haven't done a shot like this

before and I felt it tested me as an operator

and the focus I felt was sharp throughout alltakes. With the close up I kept zooming so I

got all of Daniella's face in but I didn't know if

I was doing it too much and if it was

noticeable. I really liked shooting this and the

contrast between the situations of bright light

in an open space with charley to a warmly light

enclosed place with Daniella who was the most

nervous out of the two characters. I can imagine how it could be edited.

I was elected the oust AD for Lewis and erol's scene and I quite liked this role and after us saying whowe liked in what role and most people said, Erol as first AD because he was warm and friendly but

assertive. I really wanted to put this into action, I felt that I was more friendly and joking with the

crew and actors and I felt I was assertive more so than when I was the first AD on the last stick and

stones, I was more one of the crew than bossing them around and just asking if they are alright all the

time. I felt that the scenes took place in similar venues and had the same feel.

    What roles we have liked?

DOP // Director // Camera Operator

    A Film in 5 Minutes 9

  • 8/9/2019 I Don't Believe You

    10/14

    A Film in 5 Minutes 10th January 2015

I think all these roles for me intertwine and I really like the responsibilities and their vision bring to

the overall piece. I really like having the creative eye as the DOP I know what shot to go in for and as

the director it's the bigger picture with the actors as well and the camera operator is the person who

puts it into action therefore these are the roles. Saying this I haven't liked everyone role I have been

in such as contuinity because I think I have an eye for attention to detail, I don't mind make up but

I'm not that type of person and sound I'm not keen on.

Whose performance have you liked and why?

Everyone in the company have had moments where I have believed them and their performances can

be naturalistic, but Daniellaand Amberfor me have been the two performers that I have liked most

scenes they have been in; both have a warming presence on camera. I think Daniella's style as a

screen actor is more theatrical and I can tell she is a character and I think that's what I like and is all

the scenes I've watched she has improved and brought a nice sense of honesty to her performance.

Amber however is the more natural actor who I can tell there is a character but it isn't as heightened

as Daniella's style of performance and this is also why I think Amber is great because the camera picksup her face and her eyes especially I feel tell the story.

Who in what crew role has been the best?

Levi as camera operator because he knows what he is doing, he has a real eye as DOP and

communicates his shot well with the crew and director. He has a steady hand when filming as well as

    being quick on the camera.

    What was said about me:

Levi and Amber both said they liked me as a directorial role because I was assertive I know what Iwanted and that was communicated to all the crew and I had a clear vision and was descriptive with

    the shots I wanted.

Daniella said my acting performance when I was wi her that I made her feel comfortable in the shot

and that because I was in it it helped her. Daniella also said that watching the rushes back she could

see a lot in my eyes and thought I had a really honest performance.

    Rushes:

    Scene. Actors. Roles

    1. Harriet and Connor Continuity

Camera jogging. Lots of blinking. Slow with the camera. Take two not great slow, not believeable.

Slate 2 continuity good but not with the locker. Take two went out of shot, not useable. Take three

thinking about lines to much, scarf didn't go on well.

    1b

Jogging with the camera, thinking about lines, not dynamic. Not taking a moment believable at the

beginning. Slate 4, just saying the lines, not great more focusing on the computer. Close up nice. Taketwo angle o!more head than chin. Take three boom in shoot.

    2b

Hu"ng before cues, reacting but blinking a lot. Nice camera angel. Slate 2 nice reaction at the end,

not pu"ng but not as natural in performance. Lots of darting eyes. Blinking a lot. Take 3, alright

acting but not dynamic enough in the voice.

    Gav notes:

Mid shot was an ugly shot, angled wrong. Not bad performance, better in the close up. Striking eyes.

Stop the robotic dialogue. More takes would have freed it up.

Gav: Don't see your eyes we don't see what going on

    Rushes:

    3. Sam and Lewis. Director

Boom in shot. Hand break on. Not in focus. Sound really loud and sharp on take two. Better in focus.

Not believable in reactions. Pick up slate 9, loud sound. Sam went out of shot but Amber saved it. No

believable. Sam looked at the camera. Boom in shot. Whispering not realistic. Reflection. Take threebest shot.

    3b

Sound really sharp!!!!!! Background noise. Not useable. Take two use. Nice close up. Sound rubbish.

Lewis believable. Reacts not natural. Use take one. More believable with Lewis reactions second take,

eyes not looking up don't get the eyes.

    Gavin Notes

Good editing, good shots for Amber, Sam was heightened on the first take. Nice walking out thecanteen. Connor sound was bad. Good intention behind the eyes Sam but was a little heavy. Nice shot

walking into the elevator, moments that were believable with Lewis. Pretty good scene.

    4. Amber and Levi. Make up

Background noise. Sound really sharp. Lighting not great. Nice shot. Amber nice performance but

think she is right went to not natural. Sound on slamming the phone down. Not in the centre of shot

on close up. Nice lighting on ambers head should have turned around more. Amber phone can see it's

Camera jog, boom in shot. Levi's performance was nice, natural but a little forced. Not natural

suddenly going slow, continuity. Take two better than take one. Close up more a MCU. Second shot of

Levi close up better, nice performance. Both shots in a big place.

    5. Charley and Daniella. Camera operator

Nice shot, little joggy but camera was in the car. Exterior shot. Okay a little joggy. Sound a little sharp

in close up. Can't use! Just rushing lines, over the top. Aggressive. Charley harsh bright light in an

massive outdoor area that was opposite to Daniella and suited their scenario.

    5b

Can't use close up shot. The phone screen. Take two alright. It not great. Phone home page still in

shot for other close up. The close up on the lips was nice but on the lips the BCU Daniella went out

of shot near the end. More quirky shots than charleys plain shots. The lighting was nice with Daniella

    being closed in and warm.

    Gavin Notes:

Nice car shot, good use of shots. Master shot of driving in nice. Both actors you don't have do rush.

Too loud in the car with sound. Interesting shots of Daniella. Last close with zooming is nice. On the

whole really interesting, like the whole shot inside the piece.

    6. Erol and Lewis. First AD

Nice Leo's reacting to shuttle bus. Camera alright

not too joggy. Getting to mid shot too much

background. Look like Lewis looked into thecamera. Not natural talking. Sound hear banging.

Better close up not but a lot of top of the head.

Aeroplane in shot, should have put on hold. Take

three best close up shot but sound ruined see Lewis

eyes. Camera jogging. Can use take 4. Take five the

best shot, better performance form Lewis but too

    aggressive at the end.

    6b

Can't use birds eye view shot not in focus. Not a good close up loosing the chin. Nice following but

cut the edit for the close up zooming in too sharp. Boom shadow on the face. Not all of Erol in shot.

Take no useable really bad zooming, more like a BCU. Rushing dialogue Erol and not believable.

    Quiz:

I was team captain and this was so much fun and I think it is such a good and creative but fun way to

revise as well. I think we are a competitive company so there was some rivalry but my team won and

it's because we worked as a good team and trusted each other as well as knowing the answers and

being descriptive. Personally some of the other groups answers I would have marked them down on

compared to the detail we gave but I really enjoyed myself and winning was just a bonus!!!!

    Panel Technique:

    Who are you

    What have you do

Why do you want to do theatre

What theatre have you seen recently

    Walking Into the Room:

Personally i feel I am comfortable in the room anywhere

but I prefer the just o!centre, when we first walked into

the room I acknowledgeable I like being seen but having

people in front of me to look and and support behind me. I

feel that this was useful to feel how we feel comfortable

and know what we can go out of our comfort zones when

we go to the audition panels. I felt we could have sped up

this process as we were supposed to be focusing on

audition technique and for me this was helpful but something that can take 15 minutes at the most, I

want to know how I come across in a real life audition. I could see when someone was uncomfortable

    and some people were shu&

ing but me I felt grounded and centred.
