YOU CAN HELP US IMPROVE THIS MAP-BROCHURE
In this map-brochure we have attempted to in- clude the most accurate, up-to-date, and helpful information for anyone planning or carrying out an Algonquin Park canoe trip. The map is revised and reprinted every year and we would be most grateful for any additional corrections or other suggestions for improve- ment which you could bring to our attention. Please contact the Ministry of Natural Resources at the address given on the reverse side of the map.
Although this map is published by The Friends of Algonquin Park, all information on canoe routes, portages, campsites, and backpacking trails is obtained from the Ministry of Natural Resources. The Ministry is responsible for the establishment, maintenance and marking of all such facilities, and for the accuracy of all information contained in this map.

Basin Depot was a supply and stopping site for loggers of the
Barnet, and McLachlin Companies from about 1850 to 1913, with ten buildings and a
post office in 1890.
Coming back or travelling
west take left branch.
The South River is one of a
half dozen major
watercourses which drain off
the Algonquin dome to the
surrounding lowlands.
Many balsam fir along the Nipissing have been heavily
browsed by moose
Low water levels can be a
major problem between Tim Lake
and Rosebary Lake check before trip
The level of Mc Craney Lake may be lowered significantly for hydro purposes in late summer, making travel difficult. Check before your trip.
Dufond Farm cleared by Francis and Ignace Dufond in the1880s. Briefly
prosperous with logging camp market, it was abandoned when Ignace
died in 1916.
Part of a swath
11 km long
flattened by a
tornado on
August 27, 1973.
Kioshkokwi means
"lake of many gulls" in
Algonkin. The name
holds true today.
The Barnet Depot Farm, first operating
in 1882, supplied some basic products to logging camps. An "Alligator" for towing
log booms remains at the shore.
A depot farm to provide basic supplies for logging camps
operated by McLachlin Bros. during the early 1900s.
Possible low water problems
Bluejay Lake to Vanishing
Pond and along Potter Creek!
Check before trip.
Sixteen km by stage from Cache Lake, Camp Minessing
was a"wilderness resort" operated by the Grand
Trunk and C.N.R. between 1913 and 1937.
The winter survival of deer in Algonquin owes much to the extensive stands of conifers or "deer yards"
where the snow is less deep and movement easier.
Peregrine Falcons, now gravely threatened by
pesticides, last nested on this cliff in 1962.
This huge, wild bog of Hailstorm Creek supports moose and several field nesting
birds otherwise rare to Algonquin.
In 1897 the village of
Mowat had 500 residents, a
lumber mill, and eighteen km
of railway siding.
Cairn to Tom Thomson, famous Algonquin artist.
Old log chute was built in 1896 to transport logs
from Ragged Lake to Smoke Lake.
Centuries-old, giant White Pine are scattered through mature hardwoods a rare remnant
of the forests which once dominated southern
Ontario.
The Barclay Estate complete with main house and servants' quarters, gardens, tennis court, and boathouse was
occupied until 1953.
This is one of the best stands in Algonquin
of rare Red Spruce a tree common only in the
Appalachian area of North America.
A huge area in this part of
Algonquin was burned by two
great fires in 1922 and 1923.
Gilmour and Tecumseh Lakes lie in the basin of the
Brent Crater, still visible from the air 450 million years after
the explosion of a giant meteorite.
The machinery from an Alligator a steam warping
tug used for towing log booms, and capable
of winching itself overland remains here.
Except in spring, low water conditions
make travel difficult from
Big Bissett Lake to Weasel Lake.
One of the finest virgin White Pine stands in North America can be seen a mile up the trail
from the dam. Giant Pine, over 35 m high tower through
mature hardwoods.
After a 1953 forest fire, this area has been taken over by sun loving aspen which
provide food for deer, bear and other wildlife.
The pioneer farm hacked
out of the wilderness by
John Dennison killed by
a wounded bear in 1881.
A grave site containing
casualties of the hazardous log
drives, and some early park visitors.
On July 22, 1972 a tornado cut a
25 km-long swath which smashed
across this portage. Such spectacular
natural disturbances are rare in Algonquin.
The huge Red Pine found here are the oldest known
trees in the Park over 340 years.
Many stands of Balsam Fir and White Spruce were
heavily defoliated and killed by the sruce budworm in
the early 1970s. Such outbreaks are a normal agent of change in the
natural forest.
The Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway
constructed in 1894-96, carried Algonquin timber, western grain, and Park
visitors. This section used until 1944.
J. R. Booth (1827-1925), Algonquin's most famous
"logging baron" operated a large depot farm to supply
his camps during the early 1900's.
One of the few remaining
ranger cabins, which was once part of a network
of shelter huts throughout Algonquin utilized by patrolling
Park rangers.
Except in spring, low water conditions make travel difficult from Cauliflower L to Billings L
check before trip.
The Petawawa River from Cedar
Lake to the hydro line is very
dangerous. You should not attempt
any rapids without thoroughly
inspecting them beforehand.
The last river drives on the Petawawa
was in 1945. About 150 men worked
from April to September driving logs
from the upper Nipissing River 250 km
down to the Ottawa.
The deepest lake in
Algonquin, Eustache is
ringed by 25 m cliffs,
which continue down
through its amazingly clear
waters for another 90 m.
Greenleaf Lake lies in one of the park's two watershed natural zones. Its spectacular cliffs support a relict flora which includes the Algonquin Wood Fern, known from only one
other place in the world.
Danger: The worst part of
Crooked Chute is the last part.
Check it out.
Rare ferns grow on
the spectacular
100 m cliffs of The
Natch site of a
Tom Thomson
sketch.
The Upper Great Lakes drained through the Fossmill Outlet about 10,000 years ago. The Petawawa and Barron Rivers were major channels of this giant river
system.
The Bonnechere River between McKaskill Lake and the hydro line is shallow and rocky. The necessary portages have not yet been developed and the trip is a rough one.
The striking Silver Maple, common only along the
Petawawa River, lends a southern flavour to this locale.
Ten thousand years ago, the Great lakes drained through the spectacular, 100 m deep Barron Canyon. On its cliffs are found many relict plants from that era.
Tom Thomson sketched his famous "Jack Pine" here in 1916 with the mouth of Carcajou Bay in the background.
