Raisers of the Month September-October 2017
Beryl…of fun!
Beryl is the 4th GEB pup raised by the
Long family. Going in age order with Lauren
being the youngest, she was the last to be a
raiser. She waited a long time for her own
puppy to come; but, when Beryl arrived it was
love at first site.
Dr. Leslie Taylor of Canal Clinic is very
generous with her time and talents. Beryl
received the best of care.
Liz Neubaum puppy sat her early on. Beryl
thought she was one of the pack and actually
came home thinking she was a glamorous
Golden Retriever
We are grateful to all the families who
watched her when we went away. Last
October Beryl stayed with Brian Reed and
Margie Coccodrilli. Beryl had a blast playing
with other dogs and went to Montgomery
College’s Germantown campus event and
church – feeding both mind and soul.
During the scavenger hunt, Beryl boned up
on her knowledge of cats. This was actually
very smart of her because when she stayed
with Bobbie Havel this summer, she had to
learn to live with one!
Beryl grew up before our eyes. The day
to put her on the GEB van headed for NY
came too soon. We miss you Beryl and hope
you like “college” life.
A special thanks to Jean and Celeste for
the puppy training of all three girls. We can’t
imagine going through those teen-age years
without the GEB experience. We are so glad
to have had the opportunity to do this. It has
enriched our family immeasurably.
Good-Bye and Good Luck Beryl. You Make
Us Proud! – The Long Family

Raisers of the Month
Fuji is one lucky female black lab.
Not only is she going to be training
together with her brother Fresno, but
she will be trained by experienced
puppy raiser Bobbie.
After getting an early start on
her training with Carla, Josie
finished her formative years
with Patricia. Here’s Josie
attending the 2017 American
Thoracic Society Conference.

Welcome Repeat Raisers
There’s no stopping Jodi as she says “good-
bye” to Elton and barely takes time off before
she has welcomed yet another beautiful black
male lab, Fresno.
Wow! Double duty is being
accomplished as Jean is still
training Whim but is doing puppy-
start training for beautiful female
Bettina before Bettina moves on to
her permanent puppy raiser family.
Thank you John for raising Kaya and giving her the
best training possible!

October is Disabilities Month and Montgomery College invited Guiding Eyes to be present during the
day on October 2 to meet and greet students, socialize with pups in training and answer questions
about how the dogs learn to be a future guide dog. Having fun and meeting many students were the
most recent new pups, Bettina and Fresno along with their mentors Georgie and Whim.

Montgomery Region Participates in Vision Walk
At the invitation of the Foundation for Fighting
Blindness organization, GEB-Montgomery participated
as a vendor at their annual 5K Vision Walk that took
place on September 24 at the Rockville Town Square.
This is a 5K walk-a-thon fundraiser to raise money for
retinal degenerative research.
Not only did we provide information about the puppy
raising program, but we had several of our raisers and
pups not only “talk-the-walk” but “walk-the-walk.”

International Visitors Observe Puppy Training Program
Montgomery Region – Page 4
The International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program
whose goal is to provide firsthand knowledge about U.S. society, culture and policies. Through the help of Shawn of fhi360, a
non-profit in D.C. that assists the State Department organize overseas visits, Guiding Eyes-Montgomery hosted a group of
disability rights advocates from Lebanon on October 1. The mission of these visitors, that consisted of four disability advocates
from the nonprofit sector and one senior advisor from the Ministry of Social Affairs along with several interpretors, was to
observe and learn more about how an organization trains guide dogs and how these dogs can provide increased independence to
blind and visually impaired persons. They are in the U.S. for three weeks and Guiding Eyes was the first stop in their journey that
will take them to the northwest, Chicago and then to their final destination in Florida.
Following completion of puppy class, our welcomed visitors were able to network and speak directly with our puppy raisers and
their pups, as well as other volunteers who were present for this activity. A special “thank you” goes out to two graduates, Cindy
and her guide Gardenia and Jimmy and his guide Tripp, for attending and being available to share their experiences and
connection with Guiding Eyes for the Blind.

Fun Places to Go
Dominion Region hosted their annual Potomac River Cruise and several Montgomery Region
raisers and dogs attended this year’s event. There were about 30 dogs and 70 people who enjoyed a
most beautiful evening sunset and harvest full moon while cruising the Potomac. Thank you
Dominion for organizing and inviting Montgomery Region.
