i have
The tango in Spanish is pronounced (tahn-go).
To express possession (what you have) you say
tengo = I have
Translate:
1. I have two keys. _____________________________________________________
2. I have three suitcases. _________________________________________________
We use tengo with many expressions to express physical sensations.
Compare the way in which English uses the verb “I am,” but Spanish
expresses the same with tengo:
- 19-
I’m afraid. Tengo miedo.
I’m cold. Tengo frío.
I’m warm (hot) Tengo calor.
I’m in a hurry. Tengo prisa.
I’m sleepy. Tengo sueño.
I’m thirsty Tengo sed.
I’m hungry. Tengo hambre.
I’m embarrassed. Tengo vergüenza.
I’m right. Tengo razón.

Many nouns ending in –al are THE SAME
Just add –o to make it ‘pretty close’
Have you ever heard someone add -o to the end of an English word to
(hopefully) produce the Spanish equivalent? While the person may
have just been joking around, there really are several nouns that are
formed simply by adding an –o to the English. These words follow the gender
rule and are masculine except where noted. Remember, these words are nouns.
¹ These nouns refer to people and reflect gender. The feminine forms are adulta and
humana.
Change -y to -ia
These words are all feminine. Watch out for verbal stress!

I LIKE IT
As a new speaker of a language, one of the most frustrating things
you may feel is that you can’t “be yourself”. It’s harder to make a joke or tell a
cute story and you may feel as though you’ve lost a part of your charming personality!
Being able to express your likes and dislikes is helpful in this situation. This
easy expression allows you to reveal just a little bit more about YOU!
Don’t worry about how this phrase makes sense grammatically. You can
always learn about that later. For now, just practice!
Me gusta I like it
Me gustan I like them
Want to provide even more information? You can! All you need is a noun to
accompany this phrase. Let’s start by using some of those amazing cognate words
on the previous pages. Just make sure to use the definite article. You can make
the phrase negative simply by adding no to the beginning. Check it out:
Me gusta la cultura. No me gusta el color.
Me gustan los animales. Me gustan las vacaciones.

expressing possession and the verb have
There are two verbs in Spanish that are the English equivalent of “to have.”
One of them is used specifically in conjunction with other verb forms. The other
(below) indicates possession and is HUGE in basic communication: You already
know tengo. Here are the rest of the forms of the verb tener:
tengo = I have
tienes = you have (tú)
tiene = you have (usted)
tiene = he has, she has, it has
tenemos= we have
tienen = you (all) have (Uds.)
tienen = they have
Translate:
1. Do you (Ud.) have a fork? ________________________________________
2. I don’t have an umbrella. ______________________________________________
3. Do you have your phone? (speaking informally)
¿_______________________________________________________________?
4. They don’t have (any) gas. _____________________________________________ “any” is implied and doesn’t need to be translated 5. I don’t have (any) money. ______________________________________________ “any” is implied and doesn’t need to be translated
6. I have no idea. ________________________________________________________
7. We have a big family. __________________________________________________
8. Do you (formal) have my number? _______________________________________

the endings
The two letter ending of -ar, -er & -ir is replaced accordingly (depending on their
classification). Notice that -er and -ir verb endings are very similar. The only
difference between the two is in the first-person plural.
-ar -er -ir
1st -o -o -o
2nd -as -es -es
3rd -a -e -e
1st -amos -emos -imos
3rd -an -en -en
Look at the next page. Find a few -ar verbs that you know YOU will
use a lot. Write original sentences or questions using the verbs you
selected. Then do the same with -er and -ir verbs. Make sure to
share with your instructor and classmates.
