And then—the watcher at his pulse took fright. No one believed. They listened at his heart.Little—less—nothing!—and that ended it.No more to build on there. And they, since theyWere not the one dead, turned to their affairs.

Out, Out” by Robert Frost - American Poet 1874-1963

Melissa Harris Perry, who is phenomenally gifted opened her MSNBC broadcast in a stirring and moving fashion last week.

The tenured professor at Tulane University/ turned social journalist for the NBC network parsed no words and wasted no time getting to how she felt about the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson Missouri.

The final words of a poem by entitled “Out, Out” by Robert Frost revisited me like a bowl of six day old collard greens.

I got sick and I was woefully aware of what was making me sick. Here is my paraphrase of what

Dr. Harris-Perry said in a two-minute commentary juxtaposed to a collage of black men who have become carnage and unwitting celebrities at the hands of police brutality.

In the past decade alone the police have killed Timothy Stansberry of New York who was unarmed.

From Brooklyn New York, Sean Bell; unarmed. Oscar Grant unarmed in Oakland California.

Aaron Campbell Portland

Oregon, unarmed. Alonzo Ashley Denver

Colorado, unarmed. Wendell Allen in New

Orleans Louisiana unarmed. Jonathan Ferrell Charlotte North Carolina, unarmed. Eric Garner Staten Island New York, unarmed.

Michael Brown Ferguson Missouri, unarmed.

Over the past decade these men and hundreds of others have lost their lives to the police.

According to the FBI, from 2006 to 2012 police officers across this nation killed two black men per week.

But then she went back in time in order to flesh out her argument.

Dr. Harris Perry recited part of Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Taney’s written record supporting the decision against the Black plaintiff, Dred Scott.

“It is too clear for dispute, that the enslaved African race was not intended to be included, and formed no part of the people who framed and adopted this declaration. (The

Declaration of Independence) Black men had no rights for

which the White man was bound to respect.” Justice Taney may not be related to some of our sitting Supreme Court justices, but he’s definitely from the same clan. Robert Frost’s “Out, Out in 1912 was essentially a form of

protest against the lack of child labor laws in England during that period.

This poem dramatically illustrates how a young boy was killed by a saw when he cut his own hand off.

The travesty Frost points to was that the boy did not deserve to die and that the fault lies with a society that did nothing to prevent the death and nothing after the death had occurred.

And just like most of us, the townspeople where the boy died grieved over his loss, held a community commiseration session and then they turned to their own affairs.

They went quietly back home and did nothing to ensure that this would not happen again.

It is more than encouraging that the protesters of all races in

Ferguson have already been there for twelve days at this writing. They have outlasted Dr. King’s assertion that the Negro had a 10 day memory, and after 10 days it was as if we forget even the most horrible atrocities that we suffer as a race of

people. Michael Brown like the

others mentioned here and so many others who go unnamed are all dead.  And as you look upon the faces of your Black fathers, friends, sons, uncles, cousins or your “boo”; ask yourself which one will be next. Unless…

Out; Unless…

The Taste is in the heart of downtown Garland and the restaurant is just the place to go for not only a great meal.

There’s also the Poetry Place, a multi-purpose event center that is ideal for everything from quinceaneras and weddings to baby showers and corporate or organizational meetings.

Hailing from the great state of Louisiana, Chef Rodney is the man in the kitchen, both at home where he keeps his wife happy and at The Taste where customers are treated to a menu filled with “country classic food.”

Chef Rodney calls the cuisine, “comfort food,” with a menu that boasts everything from chicken and cakes (pancakes, that is) and pot roasts to meatloaf, homefries and succulently seasoned salmon.

There’s also the chef ’s special. On any given day your tastebuds are at the whim of Chef Rodney.

The Taste has only been open since June 5, 2014, but there’s a steady stream of customers who dine on Chef Rodney’s creations.

Although his professional training took place at the renowned Le Cordon Bleu, Chef Rodney got his first lessons in the kitchen under the tutelage of his great grandmother, who raised him.

“She showed me around the kitchen,” said Chef Rodney. “It began with me waiting around to lick the spoon.”

From there he developed a love for cooking. It’s a love he and his childhood friends also shared growing up.

It’s that love that Louisianans are known for, he explained.

“We have a culture of putting love into the food we cook,” he said proudly. “Or food is comforting and makes you feel good.”

Feeling good is important, says the Chef. When the decision was decided to bring The

Taste to Garland, Chef Rodney said there was a desire to have an event center with a restaurant inside of it. The Taste actually provides all the food for events held in the Poetry Place.

Additionally, he said, there was a concern that along with reasonably priced food, there would be nice music and a warm engaging atmosphere, like at home.

Right nowThe Taste family is getting the word out about Garland’s best kept secret.

The opportunities are endless for a growing area where businesses are thriving and there’s always something good cooking in the kitchen!

The shooting of a young African American teenager, Michael Brown, by a white Ferguson, Missouri law enforcement officer has pushed that St. Louis suburban area to the boiling point. It also contains many lessons for the rest of the country, and an opportunity for change.

In the nights that followed the shooting, groups of protesters displayed their frustration and anger.

They were confronted by local police officers who were armed as if they were about to do battle with foreign terrorists, not American citizens engaged in peaceful protests.

The problems in Ferguson, however, are deeper than the tragic shooting of young Michael Brown.

They reflect patterns of racial injustice and political imbalance in a city in which members of its elected government, and citizens concerned with justice and prudence must work hard to correct.

In the city of Ferguson, 67 percent of the residents are African American. Yet, the city’s police force is 95 percent white. Five of the six members of the City Council are white. In 2013, 92 percent of all police searches of individuals in Ferguson, 86 percent of all stops made by the police and 93 percent of all arrests were of African Americans, according to official reports. These disparities, no doubt, led to the

unrest that occurred in Ferguson. The leadership of the city must do more to

recruit minority candidates to become members of the police force.

At the same time, members of the minority community must do all that they can to identify and support candidates for elected office.

The leadership of Ferguson must insist upon the implementation of Community Policing, a policy developed in Texas in which police and citizens work together to protect communities from crime and violence.

Under the system of Community Policing, members of the police force are not viewed as enemies. Rather, they are perceived as protectors of citizens, and their property. A partnership is formed with residents and business owners interacting closely with law enforcement officials.

Perhaps if Community Policy were in effect in Ferguson, the officer accused of killing Michael Brown would called him over to his police car so that the two of them could talk, rather than engage in a confrontation, as some witnesses to the incident have alleged.

We must never again witness the types of military hardware displayed on the streets of Ferguson, with swat team snipers poised to shoot at protesters. This is not the American way.

We must also understand that the conditions that precipitated events in Ferguson exist in other cities throughout our country

. And we must take steps to rectify those conditions before we witness a repeat of what most Americans found revolting in a city located in the heartland of our democracy.

Leadership should re!ect racial composition of our communitiesBy Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Pity Party over here. Not!By James A. Washington

Have you ever had trouble with the Let Go and Let God approach?

I have been having my challenges with it lately. Maybe this might help some of you. The premise is allowing others to subtlety take control of your life without your even knowing it.

If I were to use hate as a starting point, many of you might acknowledge how your utter disdain for another person has affected you to the point of emotional stagnation.

I mean if you can’t stand someone, can’t get along with someone, still hurt after someone left you a long time ago, you really need to let it go.

This exemplifies a necessary approach to this Let go Let God thing. You can’t let go until you forgive.

Without forgiveness in your heart you are bound and chained to that which you despise the most, are fearful of or have been seriously hurt by. That moment of betrayal maybe lives in your today spirit and cripples your blessings tomorrow.

For example, have you ever been around someone who continues to relive a past relationship, a broken heart, a wrongful termination, a personal slight or a missed opportunity over and over again?

That’s all they talk about. When he or she sees something that reminds them of that someone or that thing, you know what’s coming.

And they actually expect you to join in their pity party; the one they’re throwing for themselves at the drop of a name, a company, a circumstance.

The problem you have is it’s the same one they threw

yesterday, the day before and the one you know they’re going to throw tomorrow.

Maybe you’ve attended a pity party or two. Perhaps you’ve thrown a few in your day. All I’m saying is without forgiveness in your heart somewhere (even for yourself), your mind and your spirit are forever shackled to that person, place and/or thing. You are scarred and therefore can never be free from it. Essentially, you are not allowing yourself to be who God intended you to be and that starts with being free.

I didn’t say this would be easy but… if you continue to let these people, these circumstances and events have control over your outlook, you’re giving them power, the kind of power that negatively affects everything good you have to offer those around you, close to you or those put in your life to enable you to fulfill your God given destiny. It’s all a matter of mind and attitude.

Paul says, “Be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” Romans 12:2. Let the truth you know help to reshape your thinking. You are what God says you are and not what the world and all that’s in it says you are not. I just believe the Lord will not deal with you until you comply with his principle of forgiveness.

“If you come to the altar

with your gift and there, remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift and go be reconciled with your brother; then come and offer your gift.” Matthew 5:23. You gotta let it go. You have to in order to claim your freedom and your peace. Until

you do, you can’t get what God has for you. My point is the process starts from within.

It takes some intestinal fortitude to forgive one’s enemies in the face of their attacks, old and new. But you must. At least that’s what I keep telling myself. I am constantly repeating “It is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”

What’s the book say? I am so trying not to block my blessings. It’s worth the effort.

May God bless and keep you always.

"Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society."

Dear Alma,

This may be a silly story, but I need some advice. My boyfriend and I have been dating about six years now. We’ve had our ups and downs and all, but this by far has been the worst I’ve ever felt. He cheated on me with my BFF. I found out five months later because my “BFF” (who is no longer a friend) decided to text me and tell me. So when I confronted him about it, he kept lying, saying she came on to him first, but she would say he did first. I didn’t want to believe it at first because I trusted him SO much, but then I got a couple other calls from a few other women saying that he’s been messing around with them as well. That’s when I knew he HAD to be cheating. Of course, I was heartbroken and all that, but I just don’t

know what to do…I wanted to get married have kids, etc. I wanted this relationship to work, talk out our problems, but at the same time I’m not letting no man cheat on me. I need some advice!

Help

Dear Help,This isn’t silly. You’re a

bright girl, and you already know what to do. Like so many others, you could wait until after you’re married and after you’ve had kids, while he continues to mess around on you, if you’d like. Marriage doesn’t prevent someone from cheating. You don’t get married and then all of a sudden become honest. And

TBT, I’ve got a feeling that part of your relationship will never change. For the past six years, you seem to be comfortable parked on the road of deception. Enough is enough. When he crossed the line with your BFF, that was your cue. It doesn’t matter who initiated it. Both are liars. Don’t just drop her; drop him, too. If you can find it in your heart to forgive him, offer her the same courtesy. It will bring you peace of mind. They both are equally to blame. Stop, rewind, play it again. I think my sistah’s need to hear me one more time – they are BOTH equally to blame! For the sake of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, girl, Let-Him-Go! You may not

feel it today, but after you’ve moved on, you’ll be on your knees shouting a prayer of thanks, wondering why you stayed so long. Chalk this up as a life lesson. In your next round of relationships you’ll recognize those red flags immediately! Different names, same games, but no worries for you. Professor Experience has taught you well. You don’t need my advice — you need confirmation. So here it is. I’m giving you permission to walk away. Believe that you’re able and capable of being a part of a lifelong, loving relationship, filled with honesty and respect. You’re so close; take that leap of faith. Don’t look back. Over time, as your heart is mending, I can’t begin to tell you how grateful you’ll be with this decision. It’s a blessing you’ve got to feel for yourself.

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

Bailey HutchisonGrade: C

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

theadminis-

tration willadopt the productive,

responsible approach to ournation’s challenges thatAmericansdeserve.”(The office of John Cornyn of

PROPOSITIONS

1 AND 2

Dallas is abuzz at theelection issues beforethem on May 9 whencitizens are asked tovote on the controver-sial ConventionCenter Hotel that isbeing backed byMayor

Leppert. But what doesvoting “no” and voting“yes” mean?It is important to

remember that thepropositions are toamend the Dallas CityCharter which, amongother things, gives thecity the power to acquireproperty for any publicpurpose. The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.
