TORINOI
Piazza San Carlo
CiaoItaly opened in Turin in 2008 as a language school specialising in the teaching of Italian language and culture to foreigners. The centre is a member of ASILS, AIL and Eduitalia. It is also accredited by CSN Lund-Sweden and Bildungsurlaub for the delivery of their courses. The school organises a Master’s in Teaching Italian as a Foreign and as a Second Language, and is an authorised test centre for the AIL’s “Firenze” and for the CILS examinations, run by Siena’s University for Foreigners.
So as to ensure its students receive the highest possible quality of teaching, CiaoItaly works with small classes and guarantees each student the opportunity to practise and improve their language skills. Access to any of the courses is therefore dependent on an entry test, in order to create groups with students of a similar level.
Lessons are taught by dynamic and qualified mother-tongue tutors who, by using the communicative method and a wide variety of teaching materials (books, magazines, film footage, music etc.), help the students to improve their linguistic and cultural skills. The numerous recreational activities organised by the school in collaboration with local professionals allow students to meet the local residents and to discover Turin’s artistic and cultural heritage.
Aware of the increasing demand for courses by students from China, Japan, Korea and Russia, CiaoItaly has devised programmes which use teaching methodologies suitable for speakers of non-European languages and are taught by tutors who speak these languages.
Finally, for food and wine lovers, we can arrange special programmes allowing participants to discover the culinary traditions of Piedmont.
THE SCHOOL
Our standard Italian language and culture courses are organised for all levels of the European
Framework (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) and vary in intensity and duration according to the needs of
the students. Group courses start every Monday, except for absolute beginners, for whom courses
begin on the first Monday of each month.
Every week, the school organises many social and cultural activities free of charge (with the exception
of entry tickets to museums and public transport): conversation and phonetics workshops, guided
tours to the main local museums and monuments, film viewings. For an additional fee, the school
can organise food and wine tastings, cookery courses, aperitifs and special dinners. University
students, upon presentation of their matriculation documents, will qualify for discounts.
INTENSIVE GROUP-COURSES: with a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 12 students, the
courses are aimed at students who wish to learn the language in a dynamic and fun environment.
They allow students to acquire the linguistic skills appropriate to the level being taught: grammar
structures, extension of vocabulary, learning and improvement of pronunciation, conversation,
comprehension, reading and writing. The courses last from a minimum of 1 week with attendance
from 15 to 20 hours of lessons per week, to several weeks, as required.
COURSES FOR FOREIGNERS WHO LIVE OR STUDY IN TURIN: with a minimum of 5 and
a maximum of 12 students, the courses are suitable for people who expect to remain in Turin for
at least a semester. These courses run with two or three weekly lessons lasting 2 hours each for a
minimum of 30 hours in total. This format allows the acquisition of linguistic skills in line with the
level being taught, at highly competitive prices.
SMALL GROUPS: with 3 or 4 students, these courses combine the dynamism of a group course
with the flexibility of a small group. They are ideal for students with specific attendance and
timetable needs. They allow the acquisition of linguistic skills in line with the level being taught, and
attendance is more frequent. Such courses can be organised either intensively (with attendance
from 15 to 20 hours of lessons per week) or with a more extended format (two or three weekly
attendances).
ONE-TO-ONE COURSES: for people who wish to learn Italian with a fully personalised
programme, they are ideal for a student who needs to fulfil professional requirements. These
courses run for at least 20 hours and can be organised at any time of the year, either intensively or
according to the timetable proposed by the student.
SEMI-INDIVIDUAL COURSES: for 2 students only, the courses combine the accuracy and the
flexibility of a one-to-one course with greater interactivity. Designed for those who would like a
more personalised programme, the courses run for a minimum of 20 hours. They be organised at
any time of the year, either intensively or according to the timetable proposed by the participants.
THE COURSES
COURSES FOR SPEAKERS OF ASIAN LANGUAGES: upon request, they can be organised in any of the formats above. They are characterised by programmes based on specially-designed teaching methodologies, which take into account the phonetic and syntactic diversity of non-European languages, and are taught by staff who are familiar with the main Asian languages.COURSES FOR RUSSIAN SPEAKERS: upon request, they can be organised in any of the formats above. They are characterised by programmes based on specially-designed teaching methodologies, which take into account the phonetic and syntactic diversity of Russian, and are taught by staff who are Russian speakers.
COURSES FOR CHILDREN (3 – 10 years): upon request, they can be organised in any of the formats above. They are characterised by programmes focusing on specially-designed teaching methodologies based on play and games suitable to the age of the participants.
COURSES FOR ADOLESCENTS (11 – 16 years): upon request, they can be organised in any of the formats above. They are characterised by programmes focusing on teaching methodologies and topics designed to be appropriate and of interest to adolescent students.
OVER 50s COURSES: this type of course is aimed at people over 50 years of age, who wish to combine language learning with a memorable and fascinating holiday in Italy. The courses are characterised by simple and enjoyable programmes aimed at learning through conversation. Courses can be organised in any of the formats above. In the case of group courses, students will be able to join morning classes with students of all ages from all over the world and in the afternoon, continue with a cultural programme designed especially for “mature” students. In the case of large groups, we can organise a personalised programme which includes both lessons and cultural activities.
SUMMER COURSES: with a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 12 students, these courses are ideal for students who intend to learn the Italian language during their summer holiday (from June to August). Intensive courses of 20 hours/week are supplemented by afternoon activities and weekend excursions to discover the local area. The minimum duration of the courses is 2 weeks.
PREPARATORY COURSES FOR THE CILS, CELI, PLIDA AND AIL EXAMINATIONS: The school offers preparatory courses the CILS (Siena’s University for Foreigners of Siena), CELI (Perugia’s University for Foreigners), PLIDA (Dante Alighieri Society) and AIL (Italian Language Academy) examinations. These courses are arranged in the months before the exams themselves and are taught by teachers who are qualified examiners of these tests. The courses are focused on the exam papers themselves and are offered as one-to-one, two-to-one or small-group courses, to maximize their effectiveness and provide the best service to our students.
SKYPE COURSES: Skype lessons have been introduced to give the most loyal students the chance to stay in touch with the school even after returning home. They are offered as one-to-one courses to allow students to fit them in with their commitments and at times compatible with time zone differences. Skype lessons may be cancelled and re-scheduled with 24 hours’ notice.
Via Po
With its 18 km of arcades, Turin is one of the most fascinating and mysterious cities in Italy. Its magic lies in its fusion of arts and history as well as its position at the vanguard of several fields. Under its layer of Savoyard rigour, there is a pulsating vitality, which not only amazes but literally enchants the visitor: baroque buildings and futuristic architecture, antique art collections and international film exhibitions, the second most important Egyptian Museum in the world and sports teams famous all over the world. The tradition of Italy’s first capital lives on in the old cafés and restaurants in the city centre, while its complex industrial fabric and world-class higher-education institutions make Turin one of the most important technological and scientific centres in Italy. The school organises the following guided tours:
• city tours (also Magical Turin and Underground Turin);• the city’s main museums: The Egyptian Museum, The Museum of Cinema, The Automobile
Museum, The Royal Museums, Gallery of Modern Art, The Accorsi Foundation, Palazzo Madama;• the Basilica of Superga;• the Medieval Village in the Parco del Valentino;• the characteristic Crocetta and Porta Palazzo markets;• the royal Savoy residences: Stupinigi, Venaria Reale, Racconigi, Rivoli and Moncalieri• the 2006 Olympic venues.
Upon request, and for an additional fee, the school can organise a number of social events and activities, including themed dinners, an aperitif under the arcades, historical reenactments such as the Ivrea Carnival and The Siege of Canelli, culinary tours to discover the flavours of the region, wine tastings in the vineyards of the Langhe and Monferrato, quad bike or hot-air balloon excursions in the Langhe or Monferrato, weekends in the snow, golf outings and cookery and baking workshops (Neapolitan pizza, Piedmontese Cooking, Chocolate, Bread and Breadsticks, Italian Pastries).
THE CITY AND ITS RECREATIONAL
ACTIVITIES
ACCOMMODATIONStudent accommodation is linked to the type of course. The school offers students a mediation service to help them find hotels, bed & breakfasts, self-catering accommodation and apartments at special discounted rates. On request, students can also be accommodated with rigorously-selected families. Prices depend on the type of accommodation selected (the class of hotel, type of room etc.) and on the length of stay.
