BY WAY OF EXPLANATION:

We have a tradition in the Department of Cinema of climax ..

ing the year's program with a preview of student productions. This

year has been a very productive and busy one, as you will note

from the program. * * * Here is the way our program of studies

is set up:

Each student may study in courses in each of the three major

areas of emphasis: { 1 ) history, criticism, and aesthetics, ( 2)

research and testing, and ( 3) production. The theoretical and

practical skills acquired in these courses are integrated by students

actually making films in the workshops.

The SENIOR PRODUCTION WORKSHOP, as the name

implies, is taken by senior students, following their training in the

basic courses in writing, camera, editing, and sound. The students,

working as crews, complete two film projects each semester, for

two semesters, assuming a different major responsibility on each

project.

The first project, completed in the first five weeks of the

semester, is a "shakedown cruise." A brief 3 .... to s .... minute film is

made which shows an analysis of action and character delineation.

The second project is a ] .... to IO .... minute film, usually black

and white, in which the assignments are more complex and diffi ....

cult.

The GRADUATE STUDENT WORKSHOP undertakes

four different kinds of films each semester: ( 1 ) one fits the needs

of a particular sponsor, ( 2) one is experimental in form, ( 3) one

is of the student's choice, and ( 4) one meets the needs of a par ..

ticular audience.

Tonight you will see some of the fllms we have made this year,

and meet the people who worked on them.

Each year the Department of Cinema in it its alumni and the general public to see the work of it recent tudent . A indicated by the accompanying list of titles, thi year has been as producti e a the past few.

Since time will not permit u to pr ent all the film we have selected representative samples from each of th produ tion cla

The SENIOR PRODUCTIO WORK HOP as the name implies, is taken by senior tudent , following their e perience in the basic courses. Each crew undertakes two film project per em ter. Undergraduate students take two seme ters of work hop, as uming different major responsibilities each term.

The first project, completed in the fir t fi e weeks of the em ter, is a quick sketch, an introductory experience in film making, which results in a 3- to 5-minute presentation.

The second project is a 7- to 10-minute film in which the as ignments are more complex, the theme more aried and in which the expected level of professionali m is higher.

The GRADUATE STUDENT WORK HOP includ tudent working on advanced degrees, who have reached a point of prof ionalism which allows them to undertake a ariety of film projects which challenge their abilities and imagination. On occasion an out ide organization may make a grant in aid to the U ni er ity for the purpo e of supporting a film production in the Graduate Wor hop. Thi provid a more tangible reference for the tudent a to eventual u e of the film although the control of approach and content till r ts ' ith the tuden and staff.

In both clas es the tudents de elop the ideas and are directly r -spon ible for the execution of all the technical a pe t of film making.

The A IMATIO PR GRAM incorporat a ariety of cour designed to teach the pecializ d proc of the medium o a to nlar e the cope of the arti t in tran forming hi ide and concep throu h th animated film. The program ' as initiated in 196 by the nimation Indu try in an effort tov ard de eloping and encouraging talent d indi-

idual both from the uni er ity and the indu tr .

Each year the Di i ion of Cinema in ite it alumni and the general

public to see the work of it recent tudent . ince time will not permit u to pre ent all the film 1 \ e have ~elected repre entati e amples from each production cla . In all cia ~e 1 the tudent de elop their own ideas

and are directly re pan ible for the execution of all a pects of film making,

both technical and aesthetic.

Usually the fir t film i undertaken during the Junior ear. The e are e entially intended to familiarize the tudent with orne of the complexitie of film making which ha e been mo tly theoretical until then.

The Senior Production Work hop offer the tudent an opportunity to experience a group effort often it elf a diffcult a problem a the film they undertake. Each student a urne re ~pon ibility for t\\ o pecific areas of function along with that of the o erall concept of the film. U ually the director i a student who ha functioned a an editor and production coordinator during the pre iou seme ter.

On the Graduate level tudent rna elect either group or individual film effort , or both. In the Creati e Film eminar, tudent have an opportunity to explore a pecific cinematic problem of pecial intere t to themselve alone. They may choo e to complete the e film or to merely purue them to editorial interlock. The Graduate Production \Vork hop offer an opportunity to undertake a group film effort b tudent who have already de eloped a degree of technical proficiency to implement their idea . Thi permit them to pur ue their film ' ith a more profe -ional approach while till free to e plore the medium.

The Animation Program incorporates a ariety of cour ·e de-igned to teach the pecialized proce e of the medium o a ~ to enlarge the cope of the arti t in tran forming hi idea and concept· through the animated film. The program \ a initiated in 1960 b the nimation Indu try in an effort to\ ard developing and encouraging talented indi idual both from the uni er ity and the indu · try.

Occa ionally film are undertaken a pecial projec · both on the undergraduate and graduate le el . he e include film which are made a partial fulfillment of the :\la ter egree.
