April 1990

Dear Fellow Genealogists,

Spring is here! It is the time of year to get outside

and enjoy the weather but also to come to a genealogical

society meeting and bring a friend . The April 21 program will

be presented by Nelso Harris, recent author of a book entitled

Settlers Along Back Creek, which focuses on the genealogy of

many early families of the Back Creek area . In May, our pro

gram chairman , Patsy Wingfield , is plannin g a trip to an his

toric home in Bedford called Avenel . We feel this field trip

will be informative, interesting, and fun .

In June, July, and August, the membership has decided to

disband for the summer due to the effect of summer vacations

on attendance at meetings. The third Saturday in September

meetings will resume in the Brody Room at 1:30 p.m. and finish

the 1990 year with one meeting in October and one in Novem ber .

If there's any way we can be of assistance at any tim e, please

let us know. Don't forget the National Genealogical Conference

in June in Washington, D.C .

Sincerely,

o!Y~~ Deedie Kagey , ~ President

Newspaper obituaries :

Died , at his residence near Farmersville, California, on the 17th of August last, WILLIAM MCCUTHCAN , in the 59th year of his age . Mr. McCutchan was a native of Rockbridge, where he lived until he removed to California about four years ago . He was an intelligent and efficient Ruling Elder of the Presbyterian Church. The attractive elements of his natural character, elevated by Divine grace , made him the object of love and confidence with all . He was known among us for his warm sympathies, his cheerful temper, his sterling integrity, his large charity, and the beautiful consistency of his religious life. He was the friend of the fatherless and the widow , the type of a fai t hful Christian, citizen and friend. He was one of a rare class, in whom the elements of character are so harmoniously and attractively blended , that they quietly become leaders and admitted examples for all.

All who knew him grieved much when they saw so exemplary a man leave his Church and county, for his distant home, and now we sorrow most of all that we shall see his face no more. Happy the man of three-score years who can leave behind him the memory of so pure a life, and there enter into a rest like his. It can be done, however, i£ we follow his example of faith and obedience . (wr1tten 1871)

CONFEDERATE SOLDIER"S LETTER TO HIS FAMILY

Submitted by: Judy Blackwell, 224 Christian Avenue, NE Roanoke, VA 24012

LETTER FROM JAMES L . GRUBB TO MARY ANN GRUBB , HIS WIFE

57

Camp Winder Caroline County, VA 1863

Dear Wife,

I take my pen in hand to let vou know that I am well and I hope when these few lines come to hand that you may be well . I have gotten three letters from you only, and I have sent you about fifteen . I sent you two yesterday , I sent you a lock of my hair and you never wrote to me whether you got it or not. You said something about having me detailed. If anybody will have me detailed they can get my labor for nothing. I would be very glad if I was. I wrote to you to have your likeness taken and send it to me. I think you might sent it to me for I would like to have it . John Wolford has Mary's likeness. Daniel Bateman is at home. You might get him to bring it to me. I haven't volunteered and I am not going to, I am not fooled they can keep us only six months. I want you to write me how your hogs and sheep are doing. Write me something about everything up there . Write to me what you are doing and what are going to do. We had a family pie last night out of those peaches and buckle berries you sent to me. When one gets anything, we all get part of it. I must bring my letter to a close, nothing more at present but remain y our beloved husband until death.

Has James L . Kegley and D. C . Kegley come home yet - -their time is almost out. I would like to see you all mighty well. Tel l Virgi nia and Sera Jane to be good little g irls until I come home. My little white headed Sera--tell her I'm going to wool her when I come home. Write as soon as you get this letter, and write how many letters you have gotten from me.

NOTE: This letter was from James L. Grubb to Mary Ann Grubb, his wife and to his two daughters~ Virginia Caroline Grubb and Sarah Jane Grubb. It was probably one of the last Jetters he wrote to them, since he was wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia , and died on May 3, 1863. He was a member of the Wythe Greys , Com p any A. 4th Virginia Infantry Stonewall Brigade. He was the Great Great Grandfather of Judy Blackwell who contributed the article .
