From the Head of Junior School
Year 3 and 4 Concert
Last Friday saw our Year 3 and 4 boys perform their annual concert. This was a wonderful event and a terrific
opportunity for the boys to showcase their talents in the musical sphere. We were treated to performances by the various
string ensembles, woodwind pieces and terrific choral arrangements. The concert once again reminded me of just how
fortunate our boys are to have so many opportunities to find their passions and talents and then to work with expert
teachers to refine and nurture them. Most importantly for me was that I could see on the faces of the boys that they really
enjoyed having the opportunity to perform for their parents and other family members.
Music is a wonderful part of our lives and to have the talent and opportunity to share your musical ability is something to
be highly valued.
Middle School Musical
I was a very proud Head of Junior School on Tuesday evening as I sat as part of the audience for the Middle School’s
performance of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. The Year 7 and 8 boys, along with girls of the same
ages from PLC, performed this much loved musical in the Geoffrey McComas Theatre over three evenings. It was a
wonderful show and I was very pleased to see so many of the boys in the cast who had come through the Junior School.
The boys and girls seemed to really be enjoying their time on stage and their enthusiasm and talents were easy to see.
It was particularly exciting to see Alex Law (Year 8) and Alex Daley (Year 7) in the lead roles of the young and the older
Joseph as well as a terrific Elvis inspired Pharaoh by Jeremy Hand (Year 8). It is rewarding to see the boys continuing
with their enthusiasm for the performing arts having seen them discovering their talents during Junior School concerts and
dramatic performances.
Cardinals Visit the Junior School Assembly
As this edition of Primary Matters has had a strong musical flavour, I will share one more musical experience that the
boys had this week. There is a singing ensemble in the Senior School made up of five boys who perform under the name
of The Cardinals. This group sing mostly in a Capella style and are an accomplished choral group who sing in a very
entertaining style.
The Cardinals came along to our Tuesday afternoon assembly and shared their talents with the boys in Years 3 to 6
performing two songs, Orange Coloured Sky and Stand By Me. Our Junior School boys were impressed with the standard
of their singing and really enjoyed hearing these Senior School boys. I think quite a few may have been inspired to work
towards being part of the Cardinals when they reach the latter stages of their time at Scotch.
Year 6 Camp
Our Year 6 boys last week travelled to Camp Charnwood for their three day Outdoor
Education experience. The boys largely worked in two groups with one group remaining
on site each day and the other group participating in an ‘under canvas’ experience where
they slept in three-man tents.
4 September 2015
One of the major highlights for many of the boys was having the opportunity to try abseiling down a rock face. Whilst the
idea of lowering yourself off the face of a small cliff can be quite daunting, the boys learn to trust themselves and those
who are working the safety cables. It is a challenge to step over the edge but, having done so, the boys will have also
developed a greater self-belief in their personal ability to overcome significant challenges.
As with most groups of boys, our Year 6 lads really enjoyed this experience and all of the other activities that were part of
the camp. They can now look forward to their next outdoor education experience in Term 1 next year when, as new
Year 7 students, they will travel down to Scotch-at-Cowes for a five day camp that, among other activities, involves some
sailing experiences. The boys really do get to do some amazing activities during their time at Scotch.
Fathers’ Day Breakfasts and Stall
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings saw over 450 boys, fathers and other significant males head down to the
Cardinal Pavilion for the JSPA hosted Fathers’ Day Breakfasts. Each day saw an excellent attendance of boys and dads
gather to share a breakfast together. Each morning consisted of a short talk from myself followed by a speech by School
Captain, Mitchell Chang or Vice Captain, Bailey Dann. Both boys spoke eloquently about what fathers mean to them
and I am sure echoed the thoughts of all our boys about their own dads.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the JSPA and, in particular, the sub-committee charged with the organisation
of the breakfasts. Also a big thank you to Mr Strempel for his words and the saying of the Grace each morning and to
Mr Croxford for the wonderful video montage of Junior School boys’ thoughts about their dads. It was clear from the
things the boys said during the video that the thing they enjoy most about their dads was when they got to spend time
together.
I would like to thank the JSPA for once again conducting the Fathers’ Day stall and providing the boys with an
opportunity to purchase a gift for their dads. A small band of parents spent Wednesday afternoon setting up for the stall
and then returned on Thursday morning to assist with the sales. The boys always appreciate the efforts of the JSPA
parents in providing this opportunity and I am grateful to all who assisted in any way to make it another successful
activity.
I hope that all of our dads have a lovely time on Sunday and get to enjoy the special relationship they have with their
sons, and with their daughters!
Parking Issues
I need to draw a concern that has been raised with me about the practice of a number of our Junior School parents using
the driveway to the southern end of the Junior Oval as a place to drop off boys. This is the area between the Junior School
precinct and the James Forbes Academy building just before the boom gate. Whilst I understand it appears to be a quick
solution to drop offs whilst we are in the building phase of the new science centre, I ask all of our Junior School parents to
refrain from using the driveway to drop off boys in the mornings. Apart from having the potential to hold up authorised
vehicles, there is great danger in the practice of either reversing into or out of this area given the busyness of the Fordham
Road/Morrison Street corner with school traffic each morning.
Jon Abbott
On Friday 28 August, our middle primary boys presented the Years 3 and 4 Concert in the school's stunning Ian Roach
Hall. The concert was the culmination of much hard work in additional rehearsals and music classes. The Year 3 and 4
String Orchestras opened the show with a robust and musical performance, followed by soloists Fergus Ross 4I
(clarinet), Eoin Cooper 4I (violin), Campbell Findlay 4I (trumpet), William Ashley 4R (piano), Adrian Li 4R ('cello),
Duc Luu 3G ('cello) and Nicolas Nai 3T (piano). The Year 4 "Bandits" Woodwind Ensemble performed Early Morning
Blues and the Year 4 Brass Ensemble performed Kool Blues, so there was a definite stylistic theme happening there. I was
particularly pleased with the members of these two groups as they have just begun playing these instruments this year.
The Year 4 Chamber Choir reprised their two songs from the Choral Festival they had attended the previous week. The
finale of the show was the Years 3 and 4 Choir singing four Australian songs, wearing some unique costumes that
represented an Australian person. We were fortunate to have percussion teacher Mr David Hicks play drum kit, which
was particularly effective in Up There Cazaly! We also enjoyed singing with two Year 7 flautists, Edward Caldwell and
former Junior School boy Jesse Castan. Thanks so much to the music staff and class teachers for their assistance. Special
thanks to Glenn Bardwell for his stage managing and to Ms Julia Piggin for accompanying almost every item!
In Tuesday's Years 3 to 6 assembly we enjoyed listening to a five member a capella vocal ensemble, The Cardinals. This
is a group of Year 12 students who had the Junior School boys spellbound as they sang complex arrangements of Orange
Coloured Sky and Stand By Me. We loved that Junho Kim, former Junior School boy, is a member of this fabulous group.
The boys are directed by Mr Andrew Hunter, Assistant Music Director and Head of Vocal Studies at Scotch College.
Ticket are now on sale for Old Scotch Music and Drama's production of Oliver! to be held in the
Geoffrey McComas Theatre from Thursday 15 October to Saturday 24 October. Some Scotch Junior and
Senior students are participating in this show. Tickets are available at www.osmad.com.au
Remaining musical events for the term are:
Wednesday 16 September Year 2 String Concert at 2.00pm in the Geoffrey McComas
Theatre. Teacher in charge is Miss Sue Hamerton, Head of
Junior School Strings. Family and friends are welcome. Tickets are not required.
Wednesday 16 September Scotch Arts Visiting Performers' Series, featuring Wilma and Friends (Wilma
Smith, Ian Munro, Andrew Bain) at 7.45pm in the Ian Roach Hall. Tickets
available through the Scotch College website.
Please note in Term 4, Year 6 instrumentalists will be asked if they would like to audition for a solo at the Junior School
Concert (Thursday 19 November). The audition must be the piece the boy would like to play at the concert, and does not
need accompanying at the audition. Boys might like to start considering this now and discussing with their instrumental
teacher. Further information regarding this will be sent home at the beginning of the term.
Interview with Music Staff Member, Mr James deRozario
What is your role at Scotch College and how long have you been here? I have been at Scotch College Melbourne for 10 years in my role as Head of Strings and Guitar.
What benefits do you see for Junior School boys participating in the Scotch College music
program? Learning music helps you achieve independence, team work, discipline and problem solving skills.
Learning music specifically at Scotch College teaches you to shine on stage, be humble, receive a compliment, be
organised and above all, communicate a story to the audience in a totally unique way.
Why is music important to you?
Music is important to me as it makes me happy, sad, brings back memories and always reminds me that life is full of
beautiful things.
Jenni Thom – Head of Junior School Music
PE and Sport
Physical Education and Family Day
Family Day preparations in Physical Education classes are in their final days with the boys tuning up their relay skills,
especially the circular relays for Year 3 to 6 boys. The Prep to Year 2 boys have been practicing their agility runs, shuttle
relays and hurdles.
The Junior Primary boys will participate in a 50m sprint, 50m agility run, 50m hurdles and a 50m shuttle relay on Family
Day. Year 3 to 6 boys will participate in 100m, 200m and circular relay races. The top 10 boys in each House will
compete in the 80m hurdles and the top 6 boys in each House will compete in the 800m. There are also some speciality
races and relays for boys in Year 3 to 6.
This week the Year 3 to 6 boys participated in House Field Events at school. The boys competed in Long Jump, Shot Put,
High Jump and Javelin. Boys were divided into four groups and rotated through the events in two hours. The top five
placings in each group for each event scored multiple points, while every boy who competed scored for his team. These
points will be added to the Family Day totals.
We also welcomed Mr Daniel Bevan to PE this past week. Mr Bevan is teaching Mr Gregory’s classes while he is on long
service leave. He is also teaching some of Mr McMahon’s classes for a couple of weeks while he spends time with
Family Day duties and tasks. Mr Gregory returns next term and all PE classes will return to normal.
Interschool Sport
The boys in Year 5 and 6 have chosen their Term 4 sports. Sport choices are Sailing, Golf, Touch Rugby, Water Polo and
Athletics. A note has gone home for boys who have chosen Sailing and Golf. There are extra costs associated with these
sports that need to be paid by the end of this term
Mr Daniel Bevan is coaching Mr Sampson’s Year 5 European Handball team and Dr Daryl Moran is coaching
Mr Gregory’s Year 6 Basketball team while both are on long service leave this term.

A note went home informing the boys of their selection. It was an exhaustive process, with many unlucky boys just
missing the team. It is very difficult when only one boy is selected from the class of 78 for an individual event. Thank you
for supporting your boys in their disappointment.
For those planning ahead, boys who place 1st or 2nd at the APS Championships will qualify for Regionals at Nunawading
on Thursday 15 October. Regional winners qualify for the State Championships on Monday 26 October.
The Scots College Tour
The Scots College, Sydney is touring Melbourne in Term 4 and will visit Scotch College on Monday 12 October. The
Scots College Year 6 boys will compete against Scotch Year 6 boys in Water Polo, Cricket, Tennis and Basketball.
The Water Polo team will be chosen from the 2014 Year 5 Water Polo team. Additional players will come from this
year’s Year 6 team. The Basketball, Cricket and Tennis teams will be chosen from the 2015 teams.
Games will be played between 9.00am – 11.00am. Basketball will be played at the Boroondara Sports Centre. Water
Polo, Cricket and Tennis will be played at Scotch. Approximately 40 boys from Year 6 will play on the day with the
remaining boys helping off the field and supporting the teams. Parents and families are welcome to attend. More
information will be forwarded at a later date.
Go Scotch!

Footy Colours Day
On Friday 18 September, Scotch College Junior School will be hosting a Footy Colours Day to raise money for the
Chitulika Challenge. Monies raised will be used to provide wi-fi access, an ablution block and a generator at Chitulika.
To support this cause, we are encouraging all boys to bring a note donation of $5.00 or more when they come to school
dressed in their favourite ‘footy’ gear. It would be great to see ‘all’ codes of football represented!
Please note all boys in Prep to Year 6 can wear their sports uniform to school on this day. As the Year 3 to 6 boys will
also be participating in House Soccer they will need to change into their House top for their games.
Thank you again for supporting the work of the Social Services team at Scotch College.

Fathers’ Day
It has been all about the 'dads' this week with the JSPA
holding three Fathers’ Day breakfasts in the Cardinal
Pavilion.
Each morning saw the Junior School boys enjoy quality time with their fathers or
special guests - it was great to see the boys so eager to be a part of this
experience.
The JSPA would like to thank Jon Abbott, Andrew Strempel, Mitchell Chang and
Bailey Dann for their lovely speeches each day. It was wonderful to see Mr Batty
attend the breakfast on Friday.
A huge thank-you to the JSPA coordinators of the breakfasts, Kersten Ross and
Andrew Tait, for all their hard work in organising the three mornings plus thanks
goes to the JSPA committee members that were up bright and early helping out
each day as well.
On Thursday the Fathers’ Day stall was held and seamlessly coordinated by
Fi Finster and Sam Brown. It is always fantastic to see the boys painstakingly
choosing gifts for their dad from the fantastic array that was provided. A big
thank-you to the mums who volunteered to help on the stall.
All in all a busy but hugely rewarding week! Happy Fathers’ Day to all the Dads
this Sunday.
Family Day
(1 week to go)
The JSPA needs your help!
As we do each year the JSPA will be running its popular BBQ and cake stalls.
We need volunteers for both stalls to serve and the BBQ also requires volunteers to cook (dads love this!).
We ask for just an hour of your time and you are very welcome to leave the stall to watch your son race at any time. We
don't want you to miss anything!
Please note there are separate rosters for cooking and serving on the BBQ stall.
