What is Energy?

• Energy is everywhere, and we use energy every day!

• Energy allows us to do work.• It can change or move matter.

Do you use energy when you play soccer or make cookies?

Heat from the SunHeat is a kind of energy that can make

objects warmer.

©FoodForTaught

• Most heat comes from the Sun. • The Sun warms the Earth’s air,

land, and water.

• How do you think heat would affect an ice cube if you left it outside?

Page 5: I will learn to identify different types of energy and how they are … · 2020. 4. 3. · Different Sounds • Sounds can be soft or loud, and they ... these types of energy on the

Heat from FuelHeat comes from other things besides

the sun too.

©FoodForTaught

• Fuel is something that gives off heat when it burns.

• Gas, oil, wood, and coal can be burned as fuel.

• Can you think of a time you’d need to burn gas, coal, or wood?

People burn wood on camping trips!

Coal grills help people cook food!

Cars burn gas to move!

Page 6: I will learn to identify different types of energy and how they are … · 2020. 4. 3. · Different Sounds • Sounds can be soft or loud, and they ... these types of energy on the

Heat from Motion

Heat can also come from motion!

©FoodForTaught

Rub your hands together very quickly!

Your hands became warmer! That heat came from motion.

Stop and Do!

What did you notice?

Current Electricity

• Batteries make some toys and electronics work.

©FoodForTaught

• Batteries work because of current electricity.

• Current Electricity- a kind of energy that moves in a path.

• The path needs to be completely connected for the electricity to move.

Current electricity powers many of the things you use.

Page 8: I will learn to identify different types of energy and how they are … · 2020. 4. 3. · Different Sounds • Sounds can be soft or loud, and they ... these types of energy on the

Current Electricity

• Current electricity can also come from wall outlets as well as batteries.

©FoodForTaught

• Current electricity can be changed into heat, light, or sound energy. It

can also make things move.

• Electricity runs through

wires into your house and into

the outlet.

Buildings called power plants change energy from coal, oil, wind, water, or the Sun into electricity.

Page 9: I will learn to identify different types of energy and how they are … · 2020. 4. 3. · Different Sounds • Sounds can be soft or loud, and they ... these types of energy on the

Current Electricity

Think about if these items use batteries or need to be plugged into a

wall outlet.

©FoodForTaught

• What are some items that use current electricity in your house or

school?

This television uses current

electricity when it is plugged into a

wall outlet.

This toy puppy needs batteries to

make current electricity to help it

move.

Static Electricity

• They are stuck together because of static electricity.

©FoodForTaught

• Have you ever had a sock stuck on your clothes after they both came

out of the dryer?

• Static electricity is a kind of energy made by pieces of matter

that are too tiny to see. • Even though you can’t see them,

they are everywhere!

Page 11: I will learn to identify different types of energy and how they are … · 2020. 4. 3. · Different Sounds • Sounds can be soft or loud, and they ... these types of energy on the

Static Electricity

• Sometimes you hear a static charge move from one object to another. We

often call this “getting shocked.”©FoodForTaught

• Like magnets, some of these tiny pieces of matter attract or repel

each other.• This causes them to have a static

charge.

• A static chargecan build up on one object and

jump to another.

The girl’s hair is attracted to the charged balloon, so

it sticks up.

Sound EnergySound is a kind of energy that we can

hear.

©FoodForTaught

• Sound is made when objects vibrate.

• An object can vibrate when it moves quickly back and forth.

• What are some sounds you hear every day?

Page 15: I will learn to identify different types of energy and how they are … · 2020. 4. 3. · Different Sounds • Sounds can be soft or loud, and they ... these types of energy on the

Sound Energy• When something vibrates, air

around the object vibrates also.

©FoodForTaught

• Messages sent from your ear to your brain tell you what sound you

heard.

• The eardrum is the part of our body we use to hear sounds.

Different Sounds

• Think about the sound of someone whispering and the sound of

someone banging cymbals together. How are they different?

©FoodForTaught

Small vibrations make soft sounds, like the sound of a whisper.

Big vibrations make loud sounds, like the

sound of banging cymbals.

Page 17: I will learn to identify different types of energy and how they are … · 2020. 4. 3. · Different Sounds • Sounds can be soft or loud, and they ... these types of energy on the

Different Sounds

• Sounds can be soft or loud, and they can also be low or high.

• Pitch is how high or low a sound is.• Fast vibrations make sounds with a

high pitch. • Slow vibrations make sounds with a

low pitch.

©FoodForTaught

This bell vibrates very fast when it is rung, which makes a high pitched sound.

This tuba vibrates very slowly when it is blown, which makes a low pitched sound.
