Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Saint Mary’s,
I begin this week with a favourite story, The Rabbi and the Soapmaker:
A Rabbi and a soapmaker went for a walk together. The soapmaker asked, “What good is
religion? Look at all the troubles and misery of the world after thousands of years of teaching
about goodness, truth and peace - after all the prayers, sermons and teachings. If religion is
good and true, why should this be?"
The Rabbi said nothing. They continued walking until he noticed a child playing in the gutter.
Then the Rabbi said, “Look at that child. You say that soap makes people clean, but see the dirt
on that young child? Of what good is soap? With all the soap in the world, the child is still filthy.
I wonder how effective soap is after all."
The soapmaker protested and said, 'But Rabbi, soap can't do any good unless it is used.'
'Exactly,' replied the Rabbi. "So it is with religion. It is ineffective unless it is applied and used.'
As usual, there are lots of exciting happenings around Saint Mary’s:
New 12 seater van: We have purchased a new van which can be driven with a car licence to assist us to
participate in sporting, cultural and community events and reduce the travel costs to families.
Ignite UN Women’s event: Last week, Mrs Langford-Martoo accompanied a group of senior girls to this
important function held at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar school. Hopefully, the girls will share some of their
learning from the day in our next newsletter. Thank you to Mrs Langford-Martoo and the girls for getting
involved in this great day.
Fraser Coast Equestrian Challenge: A huge thank you to Mr Dalton and our dedicated team of students
and parents for this great event. Congratulations to all fourteen students from Saint Mary’s who either
won or placed in events ranging from camp drafting, show jumping, sporting events, hacking, dressage
and led classes. Gabe Crane and Patrick Frohloff were also overall Champions in their age groups.
Wondai Gallery Interschool Art Competition: Congratulations to Richelle Bethke (Yr 9) and Jackson
Lucas (Yr 8) for their highly commended and 3rd placing respectively in this competition. Thanks to Mrs
Langford-Martoo for overseeing this event.
South Burnett Schools NAIDOC celebration: A huge thank you to Mrs Arrell, Mr Perrett and Mr Hutton
for organising this amazing event. Year 8 students from Kingaroy, Nanango and Murgon SHSs joined us
for this important event. We were very blessed to have elders, educators and artists from as far away as
Brisbane to teach Indigenous culture to our South Burnett students. I would particularly like to thank
Miss Poole, Mrs Mazzer and Mrs Sheroll Richard for the incredible range of bush tucker food across the
day and all of the staff who set up, presented or supervised students. Saint Mary’s College Year 8
students won the ACICC trophy for Indigenous knowledge. I would like to thank the ACICC (Aboriginal
Community Interest and Consultative Committee and Stanwell for supporting this great day. It was
wonderful to have Aunty Daisy Carlo well enough to join us for this day.
Yours in Christ

Sport News Primary Athletics Carnival Information
The South Burnett Primary Athletics Carnival
next week has brought with it confusion of dates.
The Carnival is now confirmed for next
Tuesday 14th of August (Field Events and 800m
heats) and Wednesday 15th of August (Track
Events). I was informed that the dates had
changed to the Wednesday and Thursday but this
is not the case. I'm sorry for any confusion
created by the initial incorrect information that
was given to me. Please note that your child may
be only needed for one of the days and will
therefore remain at school on the other
depending on events qualified for. If required for
both track and field events they will attend both
days. The program is ready and I will send one
home today with all the nominated athletes. I
will also make some available at the front
counter of the office. Thanks. Any
questions please call me at the College.

Year 9-10 Reflection Day Chance to Step Up
On Wednesday, the 1st of August, we, the year 9
and 10 classes, had our annual Reflection Day.
This year the Project Hatch representatives
presented a full day workshop at the Mary Knoll
Centre. Dave, Jasmine and their friend Charlie
Chooken inspired us with stories, music and self
-developing activities. The aim of the day was
to create a stronger bond between the students
and to reflect on and appreciate everyone’s
potential to make a difference. The day was full
of laughter and smiles as everyone engaged
positively in the various group activities such
as, musical charades and pass the chook . As a
fitting closing we were given the opportunity to
anonymously choose two people, whom we
could thank or apologise to, which helped
strengthen and rebuild friendships. We received
a chance to show our musical talents and Kyle
Raabe blew us away with his guitar skills and he
was supported by a less serious performance by
Rhiannon Budgen on guitar and vocals. We
really appreciated the opportunities and
challenges Project Hatch presented us and at the
end of the day we emerged enlightened and
inspired, ready to experience new things and to
‘Step Up’ in life where possible.
A special thanks to Mr Perrett, Mr Ross and
Ms Sudull who organized the event, and to
Dave and Jasmine from Project Hatch. We
would also like to sincerely thank the Saint
Mary’s Pastoral Parish Council for kindly
sponsoring the day.
