INTRODUCTION
SINCE the publication of the first volume of this Bibliography in 1927, so much new material has appeared that it has been found necessary to make a complete revision of the Theban necropolis and to divide it into two sections, Part I con taining only the private numbered tombs with the similar tombs now lost, and Part 2 the rest of the necropolis. The latter, entitled Royal Tombs and Smaller Cemeteries, now in the press, includes the Valleys of the Kings and Queens, the Antef and Dynasty XVII cemeteries at Dra' Abu el-Naga', various other cemeteries and burials, secular buildings such as the Deir el-Medina village site and the Palace of Amenophis III, and a summary of the numerous graffiti on the cliffs.
The 409 private tombs dealt with in the present volume bear the official num bers of the· Antiquities Service, 1-334, as listed in Gardiner and Weigall, A Topo graphical Catalogue of the Private Tombs of Thebes (1913) with a Supplement by Engelbach (1924), to which must be added articles by }lruyere and Davies in Ann. Serv. xxv (1925), pp. 174-7, 239-41, and Fakhry in Ann. Serv. xlvi (1947), pp. 38-45, bringing the number up to 367; more recent discoveries have pro duced additional tombs, the last two uncovered in the spring of 1959.
This ed.ition differs in many respects from its predecessor, and the scope has been enlarged to provide a brief description of all scenes in accessible tombs, many still unpublished, together with tomb-plans, and maps showing their position in the necropolis. In these descriptions the registers are given in Roman numerals in heavy type, and the bibliographical references in a separate para graph, arranged according to the registers. In order to save repetition, the names of parents and wife of the tomb-owner, and references to lists of titles in Sethe, Urkunden, and Cerny, Repertoire onomastique, without detailed analysis, have been entered at the beginning of the tomb. Owing to the numerous additions most of the scenes have had to be renumbered, but the paragraph numbers of the rst edition appear in brackets, so that previous quotations can be easily traced. Besides the references to new publications, it has been thought worth while to include certain important series of photographs, notably those taken by Harry Burton for the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, by the Chicago Oriental Institute, and by Professor Siegfried Schott. Of the tombs without numbers known to older copyists (a-uu of the original edition), several have been redis covered and are now included in the official series. Readers will notice the omis sion of extraneous objects of other periods found in or near the tombs, notably the Royal Cache of coffins in No. 320; these have been transferred to Part 2 of this volume under their appropriate sites.
For details of unpublished scenes and other new material, various sources have been consulted, especially the notebooks of the late N. de G. Davies, the
Vlll INTRODUCTION
excavation-records and photographs of the New York Metropolitan Museum and the University Museum at Philadelphia, and notes made in the actual tombs and in museums by Mrs. Burney and myself. The tomb-plans are not drawn to scale, and are only intended to indicate the positions of the scenes; most are taken from publications, or from drawings supplied by Monsieur Stoppelaere and the Anti quities Service. A list of plans with their sources is given after the Introduction, and here too will be found a list of abbreviations of published and unpublished material quoted or consulted.
It has also been possible to make a selective subject-index of tomb-scenes (Appendix A). This is followed by a list (Appendix B) of the paintings made by Mrs. N. de G. Davies for the New York Metropolitan Museum and for Sir Alan Gardiner (the latter set now distributed among museums): those already pub lished in colour are omitted here, and will be found in the tombs concerned. Other appendixes (C, D, E) contain classifications of tombs according to date and site, and the tomb-numbers used by certain earlier Egyptologists. The indexes include as usual kings, private names, and divinities, and also objects in museums arranged numerically, and a short Various index.
The transliteration of Ancient Egyptian words has presented considerable difficulty. It has been found necessary to amend the names of Theban tomb owners (originally based on the Gardiner and W eigall Catalogue) to correspond with the rest of the Bibliography; in order to avoid confusion several somewhat old-fashioned but familiar forms have been retained. There still remain many inconsistencies, but it is hoped that the forms used will be readily recognizable by Egyptologists, and at the same time will avoid the technical spelling which is not easily intelligible to non-specialists.
As usual we have received help from a large number of our colleagues. We par ticularly desire to thank the Antiquities Service for their assistance at Thebes, where accommodation in the rest-house was provided and several blocked tombs specially opened for our benefit, and the chief inspectors Labib Habachi and Abd el-Qader Muhammed for providing us with details of recent discoveries. The hospitality extended to us by Mr. and Mrs. Davies at Qurna, and the assis tance given by the members of Chicago House at Luxor, greatly facilitated our task, and we also profited by the experience of Mr. Davies's many years at Thebes, and by the expert knowledge of Monsieur Bruyere for the Deir el Medina area. The synopsis of tomb-scenes and verification of inscriptions owe much to the kind co-operation of Professor Save-Soderbergh and to researches on the spot by Messrs. Mekhitarian, Janssen, Stoppelaere, and James. The excavation-records of the New York Metropolitan .Museum and the University Museum at Philadelphia were placed at our disposal during two visits to the U.S.A., and we are most grateful to the staff of those museums, to the Chicago University Oriental Institute, and to ProfessorS. Schott for allowing us to con sult their important series of photographs. Our thanks are also due to Frau

Scharff for presenting her husband's Theban notes to the Griffith Institute for our use. Again we are much indebted to the many authors who have dealt with our difficulties or supplied us with advance information of their forthcoming publications, and to our assistants, Miss Helen Murray and Mrs. Y eaxlee, who have been responsible for much of the detailed work involved in the preparation of the manuscript. Above all we wish to thank Professor Cerny for his ever-ready help with names and titles, and for much welcome advice on the general arrange ment of this volume; our work has been considerably lightened by consultation with him at every and any moment concerning the innumerable problems which have arisen during the years of preparation.
Finally we gratefully acknowledge the skill and helpfulness of the Oxford University Press, and especially thank the printers for their competent handling of the typographical complications, and the readers for their minute care and attention to detail.
