MessAGe FRoM IAMFA PResIDent virtual Conference 2021

Welcome to our 31st IAmFA Conference, and our second virtual conference due to the pandemic . We have become good at this, having launched our first- ever virtual conference last year from Australia . our Australian hosts set the bar high, having produced an expert program filled with relevant content and virtual fun . This year will be no different!

The pandemic is still raging throughout the world, and it has caused a total revolution in our profession . We have learned how to close our facilities for months, then reopen only to close again . In some areas, such as Australia, they have reopened and closed too many times to count, but they have saved lives in this challenging process . everyone has pivoted as needed, to keep staff, visitors and facilities safe .

Key to our success in managing through this pandemic, and acquiring new skills, has been our ability to learn from one another . IAmFA has been the link between our members and the critical information we have all needed . This year’s virtual conference is filled with vital facilities-management content, in a format that works on a computer screen .

our program committee this year worked to produce a conference that will provide us with ideas for innovation, cost savings, and improved stewardship of our facilities . They worked all year to pull together the presenters for this excellent program, and we owe them our sincerest

praise . We cannot thank our 31st IAmFA Conference hosts—Tiffany myers, randy murphy, Tony Young, Jennifer Sainato and Dan Davies—enough for all this effort in producing an outstanding conference .

We have been able to offer our conference free of charge to all members this year, due to the amazing support we have received from our corporate and conference sponsors . each company has offered much-needed assistance to help us weather this pandemic, both with funding and by offering their knowledge and time for educational content . All of our cultural institutions are financially suffering due to the pandemic, and having our conference offered for free again this year has helped every individual member attend and gain intellectual insight and much-needed fellowship . We could not have done this without your sponsorship support, and we thank you so very much!

We look forward to being together in person next year, in San Francisco, California . Until then, however, we will work to get through this pandemic period, emerging stronger and more resilient . We have proven to the world that we can maintain our cultural facilities through unimaginable challenges . Conferences such as this prove just how inventive, creative, and fun our IAmFA members can be, even in the worst of times . We make it the best of times by being together—in the safest way possible, while standing strong .

on behalf of the 2021 Conference Committee, we would like to welcome you all to the 2021 IAmFA virtual Conference! Although we are marking our second year in a virtual conference environment, we very much look forward to meeting in person again soon .

The 2021 Conference does not have a true “IAmFA host,” as it has had in the past . normally, we are in one geographical location—highlighting the beautiful museums, architecture, and programs of that location . even for our inaugural virtual conference last year, our hosts were melbourne and Hobart, Australia . This year we took a different approach, and decided that our geographical location would be everywhere! We hope you find the educational content useful and interesting,

as it explores programs, museums, and projects from IAmFA members all over the world .

As you turn the pages of the conference program, you will find information on the each day’s schedule, snippets of the educational content, and information on our speakers and sponsors .

Sincerely,

Tiffany myersJennifer Sainatorandy murphyAnthony YoungDan Davies

The IAmFA 2021 virtual Conference has been made possible with the generous support of our sponsors .

Planning a new Museum or a Major Renovation: Lessons Learned at Planet Wordnew construction and major renovation projects only occur a handful of times in the life of a museum. these projects are not just critical for the future of a museum’s exhibits and visitorship, but are also extremely important in the development of a museum’s ongoing operations.

although these projects are challenging for all museums, they can become extremely difficult for smaller or new museums, which may have limited facility management resources. this is especially true during the design process, which demands creative energy and collaboration from all stakeholders to ensure that the vision turns into something that will not just look great and have a unique visitor experience, but will also operate efficiently after it opens.

featuring the executive director of Planet Word (Patty Isacson Sabee), the former executive director of the Museum of Pop Culture (Jasen emmons), and moderated by a project management professional (Kris Collins of MGaC), this panel will look at shared experiences and lessons learned, providing insights into how to effectively navigate the planning, design, and construction of a new museum.

Lighting Connectivity solutions at Dulwich Picture GalleryImplementing new lighting and controls can offer a whole host of new connectivity opportunities. Although eRCo has presented in the past on the potential impact, this discussion with alexander Moore of dulwich Picture Gallery will share real-world examples.

the session will begin by walking attendees through the history of the Gallery, the process undertaken, and what measurables have been captured since the renovation was undertaken. Beyond that, however, alex will talk about what the lighting controls have done to change the experience at the Gallery for both staff and visitors.

As the need to draw visitors back to museums and galleries becomes more critical than ever, rich and alexander will together address the inevitable role of technology in the future of museums, whether it involves accessibility or changing the conversation around conservation.
