IB FILM SUMMER ASSIGNMENT 2017-2018 REVIEW COURSE SYLLABUS AND RESOURCES POSTED ON MY SCHOOL WEBSITE. At the school’s home page, GO TO ACADEMICS, ENGLISH DEPT, ROSA REYES to access my page and resources.

SL, PT I OR HL, PT I [JUNIORS ONLY] To best prepare you to start the 2-year coursework of IB Film and for the assessments to be submitted by your Senior year, WATCH MOVIES!!! Spend your summer WATCHING FILMS you always wanted to see but sometimes didn’t have the time or re-watch films. Watch classics from the Golden Age of Hollywood to contemporary films. Watch a variety of genres [Action, Drama, Fantasy, Silent, Sci-Fi, etc.]. Watch Foreign films, especially adaptations [from various continents and countries] to expand your film viewing critical lens. As you view a variety of films, also take time to view the “Director’s Cut” so you can hear film analysis regarding Directing, Editing, Cinematography, and/or Sound Engineering. These are “roles” you will take on as you produce films throughout the class projects and on your own. Also by viewing a variety of films, you will begin to develop a perspective on what type of visual story you are interested in creating for your IA. I also strongly encourage you to practice film editing or at least familiarize yourself with the various software programs that exist to edit films. Having a cursory understanding of how editing works to connect film footage can also help you develop ideas better for your film projects. There are some beta versions of “free ware” on my website that can direct you towards some editing tools.

SL, PT II OR HL, PT II [SENIORS ONLY] DEVELOP YOUR IA PRE-PRODUCTION. If you haven’t already started filming or developing the concept of your film, begin to do so over the summer. This IA will be completed throughout the school year. You can develop the film story, determine locations for shooting or develop your skills on software you intend to use for your IA [animation or live action or both]. As you are developing your film, take notes and reflect on the process as part of your PRE-PRODUCTION SECTION of your IA PORTFOLIO. Complete your DOC SCRIPT [INDEPENDENT STUDY]. FULL DRAFT w/COVER SHEET, RATIONALE, SCRIPT, AND RESOURCES PAGE DUE BY NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 8TH. PRACTICE ORAL SCENE ANALYSIS [Reference my website for the NY Times Samples]. Record 10 min [SL] or 15 min [HL] scene analysis for any film from this year’s list I gave you and submit via Soundcloud link, Google, or Email by attaching an .mp3 file by no later than SEPTEMBER 1ST.

We will begin the first few weeks of the school year reviewing this assessment to prepare for the FINAL ASSESSMENT once the new film list is revealed by IBO. Both the IND STUDY AND THE ORAL ASSESSMENT[s] will be the first assessments finalized by the Fall [Sept-Oct]. By having these completed before school commences, you will then have the bulk of your year to focus on just your IA. USE YOUR SUMMER WISELY to prepare and to complete at least the IND STUDY so you can have more time to produce film projects and develop and complete your IA [FILM/FOLIO] before it is due [by April 2018]. HL [SENIORS] ONLY: Begin searching and seeking possible FILM INDUSTRY INTERNSHIPS you can do during your senior year and into Senior Experience, especially if you are interested in pursuing film study beyond your studies while at WL. See my webpage where I have a resource list of contact information from various local sources in film. NEW FOR SL-HL CLASS OF 2019: Here is a link to preview the new assessment GUIDE for IB Film. The new strands for the 2nd year assessment cycle is also below. Class of 2018 will still be assessed using the prior standards. JUNIORS will address all specifics when we return in the Fall. However, review the new guide to help you prepare best for the course. SEE BELOW, PAGE 3.
