CATEGORY: CTO OF THE YEAR
Ajay Joseph, CTO of the Year for First Time Seamless Global IoT Connectivity BACKGROUND
Ajay Joseph is the Chief Technology Officer of iBASIS and has more than 30 years
experience in the telecommunications industry. His leadership over more than a decade has
been instrumental in iBASIS’ growth from start-up to one of the largest international
carriers in the world. Ajay Joseph led the technical strategy and engineering of the iBasis
global network and underlying systems. Ajay is also responsible for driving innovation
within iBasis and in this capacity, Ajay and his team focus on leveraging the company’s
unsurpassed expertise in IP technologies and real-time communications to develop new
solutions and services for fixed, mobile operators, and IoT service providers. Thanks to his
technology vision and market knowledge, he makes the iBASIS multi-service IP-based
network one of the preferred networks by carriers and mobile operators worldwide to
carry their international voice and mobile data traffic. Recently, Ajay drives the new development of iBASIS Internet of Things global connectivity
solution, the iBASIS Global Access for Things solution which addresses the demand from
Device Manufacturers and IoT Service Providers (IoTSPs) to deliver their products and
services globally. He successfully built partnerships to create one unified platform for
seamless, remote, programmable, and secure provisioning management and data analytics,
relying on GSMA-standard eSIM/eUICC technology.
Prior to joining iBasis, Ajay was architect of the IP Telecom division at GTE Internetworking
responsible for new VoIP-based services. He also held senior level engineering and design
positions at DeskNet Systems and NYNEX Science & Technology.
Ajay is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program of Harvard Business School. He
holds Professional Engineering and Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering
from Columbia University.
VISION & STRATEGY
iBASIS started out as a voice over IP company in the late nineties. It merged with the
wholesale arm of KPN in 2006. After which the iBasis / KPN Board seeing the downward
market pressure on voice asked the CTO Ajay to incubate a mobility IPX business servicing

the 4G roaming market globally in 2013 which has now grown into the worlds 3rd largest
IPX globally.
In 2017 while re-strategizing on the company transformation which had already moved in a
big way from voice services to mobile services, Ajay starting looking at the next service to
take iBasis towards.
Ajay came up with the Global Access Service for Things based on:
a. the iBasis core competence on being global by serving 150 markets
b. the direct relationships iBasis has with 300 mobile operators worldwide and
c. the evolution in technology in the Subscriber Identity Module from a regular sim to
the embedded SIM (esIM).
d. IoT being a trillion dollar market across the value chain
After a scan of the market in what was available from a product and competitor point of
view, development of a business plan and obtaining corporate funding from the iBASIS
board the Global Access for Things service was launched as a minimum viable product in
November 2017. In 2017 we also signed up with our first IoT customer UROS in Finland
who started using our eSIM service for bill shock prevention.
The Global Access for Things service targets IoT Service providers (IoTSP) who need
cellular connectivity for their things in several countries. The eSIM and the multiple MNO
profiles that iBasis has acquired via its relationships described above provides the IoTSP a
single Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) to provide the eSIM service across 700 networks globally
via LTE, LTE-M, 3G, 2G and soon LTE-NB.
The Global Access for Things works with a Gisecke & Devries Remote SIM backend, profiles
from MNO’s across the world, a home-grown portal and the secret sauce, the eSIM engine
that orchestrates the sims, inventory, policy, quota control, profile control, globally
distributed P-GW’s and the connectivity for a secure experience for IoT customers.
In 2018, the support infrastructure was expanded to have a proactive service assurance
system, which tests the end to end systems and connectivity across several countries
globally in near real-time to ensure the service availability and proactiveness.
RESULTS
Given our specialization was in IoT connectivity via eSIM. Our strengths what we observe
why customers like us are:
a. Our Independence not being associated with an operator
b. The Single SKU eSIM working globally
c. Agility of iBasis vs Incumbent MNO

d. Keeping the data locally for both performance and regulatory needs
We have won customers in several verticals over the past year since inception; in
enterprise mobility, shipping, automotive, oil drilling, cable co’s; In December of 2018 iBasis
won the deal with Nordic Semiconductor of Norway where their LTE-M/NB-IoT modems
come packaged with iBasis eSIMS.
We have a pending patent application for “Internet of Things Service Architecture” which
will allow for intelligent profile selection, and which differentiates us from competitive
offerings.
The advantage of using our technology ie GSMA specified eSIMs and the back-end has been
we can interface and interoperate easily with the Tier 1 MNO’s across the world who are
willing to share their profiles with us.
We are currently working on the next generation technology on eSIM with the leading
suppliers and are also working on the transformation to the Integrated SIM (iSIM) which
has the entire backend in secure software.
Internally, within iBasis we have begun transforming the company from voice towards
mobile customers to now customers who are enterprises. We expect the future of the
company to be driven more by mobile and these IoT enterprise customers.
Over the past 12 months, we have more than tripled our customer base (or increased by
more than 233%) addressing verticals such as transportation, semi-conductors, logistics,
and travel to name only a few. We have hundreds of thousands of embedded SIMs (eSIM)
deployed leading this market with an explosive data usage of more than 600% increase
over the past year and expected to reach several 100s of TB by year end.

TESTIMONIALS
Recently, iBASIS and Nordic Semiconductor accomplished massive successful field-testing across 24
countries for eSIM NB-IoT and LTE-M Technology:
"This is a very exciting development for Nordic. It's another important step
in our journey to create the absolute best customer experience by driving
simplicity, flexibility and performance in all aspects of cellular IoT for the
broadest array of devices deployed across the IoT ecosystem."
- Svenn-Tore Larsen, CEO Nordic Semiconductor
Nordic Semiconductor partnered with iBASIS as one of the world’s largest international cellular
carriers in voice, data, and IoT services to make global LTE-M and NB-IoT cellular IoT connectivity
ultra-easy, automatic, and instant when using its nRF9160 System-in-Package (SiP) module:
“We designed the nRF91 Series from the outset to make cellular IoT easy
and applicable to any application that would benefit from a cellular
connection. For us, this extends to every aspect of the module’s operation
and customer experience and that includes making international
connectivity and roaming automatic and instant. In fact, I think for any IoT
application to succeed its wireless IoT connectivity must be that simple.
With the iBASIS eSIM, we believe Nordic Semiconductor has delivered this
to its customers. It’s also why we believe cellular wireless technology is an
ideal technology for building the Internet of Things.”
- Geir Langeland, Director of Sales & Marketing, Nordic Semiconductor

"It is good to see that iBASIS is putting a lot of effort into making both LTE-
M and NB-IoT work on the same SIM. At the stage we are currently in with
the international roll-out of NB-IoT and LTE-M whereby not in all countries
support both networks, it is crucial to have a partner that works hard to
support both network types."
- Jan Willem Smeenk, CEO of SODAQ
"The time for eSIM has arrived in the IoT market and we expect it to
dominate future growth of IoT cellular connections over the coming years.
This achievement of iBASIS and Nordic is most welcome and will
significantly aid market growth of NB-IoT and LTE-M in the crucial high
volume, low data rate segment of the IoT market."
- Robin Duke-Woolley, CEO of specialist IoT analyst firm, Beecham Research
