This information is intended to help you start using the Web-based console, IBM Navigator for i, byproviding you with tips on how to work with the interface.

What's new for IBM Navigator for iRead about new functions that are now available within the IBM Navigator for i application in IBM i 7.2.v Usability and Performance Improvements

Usability and performance improvements have been made to the following areas of the IBM Navigatorfor i application:– Dynamic content in the navigation area– New dojo based tables for displaying lists of resources– Caching of data across tabs within the web consoleKey improvements due to the use of dojo technology has greatly improved the navigation area, common list view, and handling of tabs within the workspace.Task categories can now be opened to display any resource “containers” in the navigation area, similarto the IBM i Navigator client application. This makes it easier and quicker to access desired tasks.Common list views now use new dojo tables that make it easier and quicker to filter lists, scrollthrough large lists, and select items in the list to perform actions.Once multiple tasks are selected, resulting in multiple tabs in the console workspace, data is no longerrefreshed each time you click back to a previous tab.

v Target Systems and Groups

A new interface now exists to specify the target system to manage, and to be able to group similartarget systems into groups. A new navigation node "Target Systems and Groups" now appears in thenavigation area. You can select to manage another IBM i 7.2 system, or, you can also manage IBM i 7.1and IBM i 6.1 systems as well.

v Favorites

A new Favorites node now appears in the navigation area. Expanding this node will show all of yourpersonal favorites, saved by user profile and system. To save a particular list view as a favorite, simplyselect the Save as Favorite action from the actions dropdown in the table header while working with thelist. Favorites can be organized by category as well.

v Monitors

The ability to define, run, and respond to system and message monitors has been added to IBMNavigator for i for IBM i 7.2. This is an initial step in making Management Central functions from theSystem i Navigator client application available on the web. Monitors allow you to set specificthresholds and the actions that should be taken when those thresholds are reached.

v Program Temporary Fixes (PTFs)

The ability to display, load, apply, install, remove, and clean up PTFs is now available in IBMNavigator for i for IBM i 7.2. You can also work with PTF groups. The PTF tasks are available underthe Configuration and Service node in the navigation area.

Working with IBM Navigator for iMore details on how to use the IBM Navigator for i Web console to perform your IBM i managementtasks.

To perform a task:

1. Access the following URL from a Web browser where systemName is your IBM i name:http://systemName:2001

2. Locate the task category (Basic Operations, Work Management, etc) that contains the task you want toperform.

3. Do one of the following:v Expand the task category by clicking on the + icon in front of the category name and navigate to

the desired task, then click on that taskv Click on the task category name to display the Welcome Page for that task category in the console

work space, and expand the category. The Welcome Pages have links to the most commonly usedtasks and extra descriptions about the tasks.a.

Note: The last node under each task category is the All Tasks node. You can click on this orexpand this node to display a hierarchy of all tasks available within that category.

b.

Note: If a node is blue, you can click on it to display its contents in the work space. If a node isblack, all you can do is expand it to show its contents in the task navigation area.

4. When you click on a task in the navigation area, a new page opens within the console work space. Each page is identified by a tab that has the task name and an x, which can be clicked to close thepage.Hint: To have more horizontal space to work with a list of items on a page, you can click on the <icon in the task navigation area to temporarily hide the navigation area and use the entire consolearea to display the task page.

5. Use the tabs to navigate between open pages or to close a specific page. If you have more pages openthan can fit within the work space, < and > icons will appear to allow you to scroll back and forth toview additional pages.v Hint: Right click on any tab in the work space and select “Open in new window” to show that

page in a separate browser window or browser tab, depending on your browser settings.v Hint: Right click on any tab in the work space and select “Close all tabs” to remove all pages from

the work space in one step.v Hint: Data on the separate pages are “cached” as new pages are opened. That means when you

click away to another page, and then back to the previous page, the data on the page is notreloaded from the server.

Hint: The quickest way to get to the information you want is usually by navigating to the desired task inthe navigation area. For example, let’s say you want to work with the interactive jobs on the system (jobsrunning in Qinter subsystem). The two common ways to do this are shown below. Method 2 is thequickest way to get to this list of jobs, AND you get the list to appear on its own page in the work space.1. Expand Work Management. Click on Active Subsystems, which displays the list of subsystems in the

work space. Right click on the Qinter subystem, and select the Jobs action, to display the list of jobsrunning in that subsystem.

2. Expand Work Management. Expand Active Subsystems. Click on the Qinter subsystem in thenavigation area.

How to use the tables that are used to display lists of IBM i resources:

The tables that are used to display lists of resources within IBM Navigator for i are new for IBM i 7.2.They take advantage of the “dojo” web technology to perform many of the common user interactionswithin the browser via JavaScript. Some of the key features of this table are listed below:v Right click on an item to display the context menu for that item.v Use Shift+click to select a contiguous “block” of items, then right click anywhere in the block to

display the actions for those selected items.v Use Ctrl+click to select multiple non-contiguous items, then right click on any selected item to display

the actions for those items.v Click on the Actions dropdown in the table header area to perform actions that apply to the entire list

(Columns, Include, New ... , etc), or to perform actions against any already selected items in the list.v Click the Configure Options icon in the table header to change the columns to be displayed.

Note: This change is NOT persistent.v Click on the Refresh icon in the table header to update the data from the server.v Type any character(s) into the Quick Filter area at the right of the table header to quickly filter the list.

Do NOT press Enter after doing this, simply type the desired filter characters and then stop. Items inthe list that have those characters in ANY column will be displayed in the list.To remove the filtering, simply click “Clear filter” at the top of the list.

v To filter by a specific column, or to specify multiple filters, click on the icon to the right of the QuickFilter area to display the Advanced Filter dialog. The + icon at the bottom of this dialog can be used toadd additional filter criteria to the list.

v Use the icons and page size choices in the table footer to go to additional pages, or to change thenumber of items displayed within a table “page”. You can use the vertical scroll bar at the right of thetable to move up and down in the list, or, if you have selected an item in the list, you can press theCtrl+Home or Ctrl+End key sequences to go to the top or bottom of the list.
