Preamble of the organisers

The conference aims to bring together partners from industry and university research institutes in the

framework of the COMET research program "Integrated Computational Materials, Process and

Product Engineering (IC-MPPE)".

In 5 individual workshops with invited speakers from academia and industry the scientific and

technological achievments in the core topics of the IC-MPPE program are presented.

Furthermore, in an open poster session, guests as well partners of the research program present their

latest results in the framework of integrated computational materials, process and product

engineering.

The IC-MPPE - research program

The Materials Center Leoben (MCL) is the coordinator of one of five currently running Austrian

COMET K2 Competence Centers. The research program IC-MPPE focuses on Integrated

Computational Materials, Process and Product Engineering. Activities include the use of

sophisticated computer models and algorithms to digitize and virtualize material design, processes,

and product applications.

The COMET Center IC-MPPE aims to rigorously integrate theoretical foundations, the latest

validated calculation methods and key technologies to support material-based innovation.

Furthermore, the COMET Center IC-MPPE focuses on simultaneous material, process and product

development, cost efficiency, quality, material and energy savings as well as the digitization of

production chains. The research is divided into the following four research areas:

Area 1: Fundamentals for Integrated Computational Engineering of Materials, Processes and

Products

Area 1 focuses on basics and expertise for the integration of numerical models and computer tools

for the integrated engineering of materials, manufacturing processes and products. Software tools for linking material, process and product models on different length and time scales as well as

different physical phenomena are developed and validated by advanced and new experimental

techniques

Area 2: Material Engineering

Area 2 focuses on the development of validated numerical material design method suites for the computer-aided design of materials on all length scales. These tools are applicated for the design

of new structural and functional materials with tailor-made property profiles. Moreover, expertise and method suites are developed for the integration of machine learning technologies into

computer-aided material design.

Area 3: Process Engineering

Area 3 focuses on the development of validated process design method suites for the computer-aided design of manufacturing processes, the integration of advanced material models into process models, and the optimization and new development of processes and process chains for the

production of metal alloys and electronic components. Moreover, basics and software tools for model-based and autonomous real-time process control are developed.

Area 4: Product Engineering

Area 4 focuses on the development of product design method suites for integration of material and

process models into product engineering within multiscale and multiphysics simulation. Calculation methods for probabilistic serviceability and reliability assessment are investigated. Optimized products for industries focusing on mechanical engineering, metallurgy, tooling, and electronics as

well as concepts and software tools for smart products based on the Internet of Things are developed.

IC-MPPE 2019 - Conference

The IC-MPPE 2019 conference program is divided in 5 different workshops:

Computational multiscale materials design

The purpose of this workshop is to present and discuss current trends

in integrated computational materials engineering. The workshop will mainly focus on structural materials such as steels and nickel-based

alloys and discuss advanced design concepts for pushing strength and ductility as well as corrosion resistance of these materials. Special

emphasis will be laid on physical based modelling of materials at

multiple scales, on integrated computational tools that are bridging several length scales and on application of data science tools for materials development.

Thermal Management

The purpose of this workshop is to present and discuss leading-edge

developments in material enabled thermal management solutions

for removing, spreading, and dissipating heat from microelectronic

devices and systems. The workshop focuses on analysis, simulation

and demonstration of high-performance solutions intended to meet

current and evolving requirements in power electronics, lightning,

automotive and nano-electronics.

Materials under extreme loading conditions

The purpose of this workshop is to present and discuss

leading-edge developments in characterization and

modelling of materials under extreme loading conditions.

The focus lies on characterization and modelling of

materials under high thermal and mechanical loads

including high numbers of loading cycles. The presented

industrial application cases range from structural

components (railway sector, ...) via industrial production

(machining tools, ...) to aerospace applications (aero engines, ...).

Model based condition monitoring, maintenance and process control

The purpose of this workshop is to present and discuss current trends

in model based condition monitoring, preventive maintenance and

process control. The focus lies on predictive maintenance of structural

components as well as on model based and real-time process control

in industrial production processes.

Energy storage of the future

The purpose of this workshop is to present and discuss

leading-edge developments in material enabled energy

storage solutions for the future. The focus lies on current

trends in batteries and capacitors towards novel material

based solid state and nano-structured energy storage devices.

The workshop covers fabrication, analysis and simulation of

key parameters of internal transport, heat transfer and

structure-property relations.
