Classical Music

The Capital Trio came together in 1997. Since that time they have performed in New England, New York, the Midwest, the South, and in Europe. They have participated in summer festivals in Maine and Michigan and have held university residencies at Williams College, Long Island University, Bates College, SUNY Oswego and Clark University. The Capital Trio has been the chamber ensemble in residence at the University of Albany since 2008. Their recording A Book of Hours, Music of William Matthews, was released on Albany Records in 2010. Their second recording for Albany Records, Threads of the Heart, Music of David Walther, came out this past summer.

The Capital Trio consists of pianist Duncan Cumming, violinist, Hilary Walther Cumming, and cellist Solen Dikener. Duncan Cumming received degrees from Bates College and New England Conservatory and received his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in 2003 from Boston University. He joined the faculty at the University of Albany in 2006. Hilary Walther Cumming teaches at the University at Albany. Before moving to New York, she served as concertmaster of the Cape Cod Sinfonietta and the Andover Chamber Orchestra. Solen Dikener has been the professor of cello at Marshall University since 2002. He has appeared as solo cellist and chamber musician in the USA, Germany, Austria, France, England and Turkey. He earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from Michigan State University.

Ken & Brad Kolodner March 27

Old Time Music

Ken Kolodner, regarded as one of the most influential hammered dulcimer players

and old-time fiddlers in the U.S., has joined forces with his son Brad Kolodner, a rising star in the clawhammer banjo world. Father and son perform tight and

musical arrangements of original and traditional old-time music with a “creative curiosity” that lets listeners know that a passion for traditional music still thrives in

every generation.

The duo started performing regularly together in 2009, and two years later they released their first recording, Otter Creek, which became the most played

instrumental recording on the international folk DJ radio charts. Brad’s original composition “Otter Creek” was the most played instrumental on the charts.

Through performance and on the strength of Brad’s first recording, he has rapidly gained national recognition for his delicate touch and writing talent.

Ken Kolodner has previously appeared in the Lawrence County Concert series, and

we heartily welcome his return and the opportunity to see him perform with his son.

The Local Girls October 18

Americana Three-Part Harmony

The Local Girls, comprised of Mimi Hart, Brenda Catania, and Gay Dalzell, have been performing music together since 1988. The Athens, Ohio-based trio’s swinging three-part harmony and engaging delivery have delighted audiences at the White House, on NPR, PBS-TV, A Prairie Home Companion variety show, and throughout France, Germany and Austria.

A Local Girls performance always has plenty of material from the swing era of the 1930s and 1940s, with standards by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Harold Arlen, and harmonies inspired by the Boswell Sisters and The Rhythm Boys.

However, their song list reads like the history of 20th century music, including blues, bebop, cowpoke yodeling, and songs by Randy Newman, T Bone Burnett, Ike Turner and Carole King. Their special children's program, “Cowgirls: their Songs and Stories,” presents a history lesson of Western women in song with cattle calls, lullabies, yips and yodels.

Covering a century of American songwriting, The Local Girls create a warm and varied musical event, bringing good humor and haunting harmonies to songs from the silly to the heartbreaking. Transcending nostalgia, they’ll delight lovers of live--and lively--music. We welcome their return to the Lawrence County Concert series!

New Orleans Style Dixieland Jazz

The Backyard Dixie Jazz Stompers were formed in 1984 by musicians from the Huntington and Charleston areas. All members of the group were involved with other bands in the region, but they came together because of their love for Dixieland Jazz, which the group performs in the New Orleans style.

The Stompers have been featured in festivals and events throughout Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia and North Carolina. They’ve performed on the venerable riverboats the Delta Queen, the Mississippi Queen and the American Queen, as well as on the Jewel City Sternwheeler, the West Virginia Belle and the P.A. Denny.

Sit back and get ready to tap your feet and sway with the lively jazz music of this fun-loving band!

John Mock November 8

Multimedia folk Performance

John Mock is an artist, and the sea and its coasts are his muse. He captures in music and in photographs the heritage of the sea.

Audiences enjoy his narration and storytelling, which enliven the characters and places upon which his music is based. Mock performs original instrumental compositions on the guitar, concertina, mandolin and tin whistle. His own nature photography is projected onto a screen behind him, providing a scenic backdrop for the music.

A native of Connecticut’s eastern shore, Mock’s work has taken him around the world. Widely sought after as a composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist, he has worked with such notable artists as the Dixie Chicks, James Taylor, Nanci Griffith, Maura O’Connell, Kathy Mattea and Mark O’Connor.

While in the Ironton area, Mock will present an educational program for the students at Rock Hill.

Marches, Show Tunes & Classics

The Greater Huntington Symphonic Band, under the direction of Tommy Thompson, returns to the Lawrence County Concert Series by popular demand! Comprised of more than 85 community musicians from all walks of life, members range in age from 14 to 84, including students, retirees and working professionals.

The band performs a variety of crowd-pleasing music at local concerts throughout the year, including marches, show tunes and classics. The band draws its members from Huntington, Ashland, Ironton, Charleston, Russell-Flatwoods and Catlettsburg. It is a nonprofit organization funded solely by donations that help purchase sheet music.

Membership is open to anyone with basic music reading and musicianship skills and who loves to play band music.
