FOREWORD FROM THE DEAN, FACULTY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Welcome to all conference participants. This is the first time the

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering UiTM is organising three

parallel conferences simultaneously;

International Conference on Aviation Technology and

Management (ICATEM2018)

International Conference on Biomechanics and

Biomedical Engineering (ICBME2018)

International Conference on Robotics and Intelligent

System (ICRIS2018)

This special event marks an important milestone for the faculty to

provide a platform for presenting, discussing and networking of

research findings among the participants. I believe that

participants from different countries, culture and background

attending this conference will have one ultimate goal; to start or

expand their current networking within and outside of each other’s discipline.

Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research is the way forward in the research topics.

Fast advancement in technology creates new problems and questions, resulting in a real need

for sharing multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research topics. Hence these parallel

conferences are organised to facilitate the participants to interchangeably attend any

conference of their interests seamlessly. All participants of these conferences can easily

share and discuss any of the issues, challenges, and opportunities of research collaboration

that can be further explored. I hope that you will find these conferences useful, exciting and

inspiring.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and appreciation to all of

the reviewers who have helped in maintaining the high quality of manuscripts. I would also

YBhg. Prof. Dato’ Ir. Dr. Mohammed Rafiq b. Dato’ Abdul Kadir

Biodata

Prof. Dato' Ir. Dr. Mohammed Rafiq bin Dato’ Abdul Kadir is a

Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Dean Faculty of

Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). His career

brings over a wealth of experience in research, teaching,

administration, community service as well as practising engineer.

He obtained his first degree in Mechanical Engineering from a

renowned varsity, Imperial College London, and then spent a

year at the University of Cambridge for postgraduate studies. He

later returned to Imperial College London for PhD research in

Biomedical Engineering. His thesis on Cementless Hip

Arthroplasty was accepted without correction. Upon completing

his Ph.D. in 2005 he joined UTM as an academic staff. He was

promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2008, Associate Professor in 2010,

and three years later to a full Professor.

Dato‘ Rafiq established the Medical Devices & Technology Group (MEDITEG) in 2006, and within a

span of ten years, he managed to secure 95 research grants for the group with a total amount of over

RM10 million. He has published over 300 SCOPUS indexed publications in the field of biomedical

engineering and related technologies. Out of these outstanding number of publications, 135 of them

are listed in ISI indexed journals with a cumulative impact factor of 288.214. His current h-index is 23.

His contributions in scientific community also include seven books and 93 proceedings. Besides his

intellectual role in academics, Dato‘ Rafiq is also a prolific innovator. According to MyIPO Database

on Patents (2001-2014), he is Malaysia’s #1 Inventor with 27 Patents Granted. Under his supervisions,

34 PhD students and 35 Masters by research have successfully graduated in various Biomedical

Engineering sub-expertise. Dato‘ Rafiq is a visionary academician and utilizes creativity and

innovation in his teaching and supervision technique. He has been invited in numerous occasions to

facilitate courses on creativity & innovation, as well as on Leadership. He is registered at the Board of

Engineers Malaysia (BEM) as a Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate, and had been

appointed as consultant for several companies.

Keynote Title: Biomechanics & Biomaterials Advances in Medical Applications

Biomechanical analyses, especially in the areas of orthopaedics, dentistry and cardiovascular, has

evolved from purely experimental to a more numerical and computational. These numerical methods

have been successfully used for predicting the outcome of various surgical procedures. More intricate

anatomical models can now be constructed, with time taken to solve the numerical analysis no longer

becoming an issue. Short term and long term predictions of surgical outcomes in complex joints such

as the spine and the wrist can be done with greater efficiency. Comminuted bone fracture healing can

also be simulated with greater accuracy. Other than biomechanics and related analysis, biomaterials

also play a crucial role with research areas focusing on enhanced properties to promote better

integration with human tissues for faster healing and recovery. Magnesium has been the centre of

attention for its high specific stiffness as well as its degradation behavior inside human body.

Enhancement of magnesium alloys include the addition of Calcium and Bismuth as well as coating of

its surface with Silicon biopolymer, fluorine, hydroxyapatite and polycarbonate. Nanocomposites of

Mg/HA/MgO and Mg/HA/TiO2 were also developed. Other biometals under investigation are silver

nanoneedles and cobalt-chromium-based alloys. Research on the enhancement of HA includes the

addition of Barium-fluoride and Erbium, as well as developing bioglass using rice husk. Quinone-rich

polydopamine functionalization of yttria-stabilized-zirconia has also been found to enhance the

growth of apatite biomineralization.

YBhg. Datuk Wan Hasmar Azim Wan Hassan

Chief Operating Officer, Weststar Aviation Services Sdn. Bhd.

Biodata

Datuk Wan Hasmar Azim is the Chief Operating Officer of

Weststar Aviation Services Sdn Bhd, the largest Oil and Gas

helicopter transportation company operating in South East

Asia. An experienced Licensed Aircraft Engineer with huge

exposure in Engineering Maintenance, Flight Operations

and Airline Management, Datuk Wan Hasmar started his

aviation career in Malaysia Airlines. He then moved on to a

new start-up airline, AirAsia in 1996 which later became the

most well known Low Cost Airline in Asia. Initially as

AirAsia Technical Director, he was part of the management

team which made AirAsia a phenomenal success, expanding

his exposure and later hold the position of Vice President of

Operations managing joint ventures, flight operation, ground operations and engineering

maintenance. After the success of AirAsia, Datuk Wan Hasmar moved on to become an

expatriate in Indonesia as the Technical Director of TigerMandala Airlines and thereafter

moved to the Middle East as FLYNAS Chief Operating Officer, the second National Airline

of Saudi Arabia. Having International experience coupled with strengths in Engineering,

Procurement, Flight Operations and Airline Management, Wan Hasmar has been pivotal in

transforming and rebranding of Flynas and has helped the airline to become a formidable

operator in the Middle East. With the Oil and Gas aviation exposure he currently have, he

now gains comprehensive experience in aviation as a whole thus a valuable part of Weststar

Aviation team.

Keynote Title: Challenges in Southeast Asia Oil & Gas Helicopter Industry

Datuk Wan Hasmar will elaborate on the many challenges in south East Asia oil and gas

Industry. He will give focus on key areas, primarily on the stringent standard and requirement

of the oil and gas industry on which Weststar Aviation operates. The high standard of

maintenance required on its operational machine, preventive maintenances and the process to

train the highly skilful workforce. He will also share his vast experience in engineering and

aviation management on the challenges operating an Off-Shore Helicopter operation.

En. Mohd Hisham Ab Samad

General Manager, Project and Technical, UMW Manufacturing & Engineering Sdn. Bhd.

Biodata

Mohd Hisham Ab Samad was graduated from Vrije

Universiteit Brussel, Belgium in Mechanical and

Electrical Engineering in 1991. Started his career in

Electronic and Microelectronics Industries in SONY and

later Motorola Semiconductor before joining UMW in

1997 as Engineering Section Head in UMW Auto Parts

Sdn. Bhd. Since then, in 21 years in UMW, he's been in

various industries and responsibilities, from automotive

component manufacturing, metal fabrication and lubricant.

The latest was project management for UMW ventures

into Aerospace component manufacturing. it's a grounds

up and pioneering project for UMW to be Tier-1 supplier

for Rolls Royce Civil Aircraft engine. In the span of 26

year working life, he developed in depth manufacturing skill set especially in Lean

management, Engineering design, product development and costing. And in later years into

marketing and business management.

Keynote Title: Building New Capabilities for the Nation

A brief introduction to UMW Group of the companies and about our strategy on High Value

Manufacturing (HVM). UMW use Rolls Royce Fan Case Assembly project to leapfrog our

way into HVM. There are specific challenges that we face in the meeting the deadline.

Building the factory and equipped it with the right capability is only part of the problem. We

faced more challenges in getting the workforce fully trained to the required skillset and

certified, and about coming up with the right culture for HVM.

Associate Professor Dr. Hanafiah Yusof

Chief Executive Officer, Robopreneur Sdn. Bhd.

Biodata

Dr. Hanafiah Yussof graduated from Iwate University Japan

in 1998 in Mechanical Engineering, and started his career as

Engineer at the Research & Design unit, Sharp Electronics

Malaysia. After 3 years, Dr. Hanafiah pursued his interest in

robotics. He continued his Masters study at Yamagata

University Japan, with research focusing on humanoid

robots and further incorporated sensor application in robots

during his PhD at Nagoya University until 2008. He

continued as JSPS Postdoctoral researcher in Nagoya

University and completed his Postdoctoral research in 2010,

which focused on development of optical 3-axis tactile

sensor for application in humanoid robot. Dr. Hanafiah is

currently the CEO of Robopreneur Sdn Bhd, and holding a

post as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti

Teknology MARA. He is also the Visiting Professor in University of Toyama, Visiting

Researcher in Nagoya University and Hosei University Japan.

His achievement and recognition in the area of robotics is nothing shy of exceptional. He has

won several academic and research awards including more than 8 Best Paper Awards at

various international conferences. In 2010, the American Society of Mechanical Engineering

(ASME) Dynamic Systems and Control Division (DSCD) awarded Dr Hanafiah with the Best

Paper Award in Mechatronics. In 2016, he was awarded the Best Researcher Award by UiTM.

Dr. Hanafiah was the past Chairman of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS)

Malaysia Chapter from 2013 until 2015. He also the founder and heads the Center of

Excellence for Humanoid Robotics and Bio-Sensing (HuRoBs), and Head of Business Unit in

the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UiTM. He has received more than RM6 million

research grants in UiTM, including for his research on application of humanoid robot for

children with autism. His had also served as an editor in several high-impact international

journals, and founder of IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Intelligent Sensors

(IRIS) and International Robot PRIDE competition.

Keynote Title: Service Robotics Industry: Development and Challenges

It is all about managing future demand. In order to have something that we never had, we

must do something that we never did. Learn how to manage your future demand by

empowering your supply capability. "The Next Big Things" is always "A Nice to Have

Things", don't confuse between Dream and Demand. Focus on the values. The future

breakthrough is not totally relying on AI, Machine Learning and etc., because those are only

the key enablers. The future is relying on how well we balance between economic innovation

and humanity innovation. Disruptive innovation may only impact economy, but not humanity

as a whole.
