Dear Diary,

Wow, it is so refreshing to step out of the shower since the weather is terribly hot!

By the way, I didn’t know what bills were until a few days ago when I saw Daddy open an envelope, with the huge word ”PUB” in bold on the letter head.

“What’s PUB?” , I asked as I couldn’t help feeling curious.

Daddy simply replied, “Public Utilities Board, the company that deals with your water and electrical supplies.”

He didn’t seem very pleased with what he had seen. And so, I glanced at what could have possibly made him so grouchy. I saw what was on the bill, there was a huge figure beside the dollar sign. On the bill, it read $390 for the water bill!

Daddy certainly thought that our electrical usage was reasonable, but felt that the amount charged for water usage was too high, and he couldn’t help grumbling for the rest of the day.

Mummy said that she would think of ways to help Daddy save money on the water bill. She had bought some water saving products from the hardware store yesterday, but I don’t quite understand how that really helps to save water.

I heard Mummy and Daddy talking about reducing our water footprints. I wonder what exactly is a water footprint. I think that maybe I should also do my part to help reduce our water bills by finding ways to save water in our house as well.

Anyway, I heard that 70% of the world is made up of water so why does it matter?

Phase I: Problem Posing - Analyzing the Case and Generating Questions (20 min)

Case Analysis Sheet

1. Recognise potential issues and major topics in the case. What is this case about? Underline and list terms or phrases that seem to be important. Then, list 3-4 related topics or issues in the case.

2. What specific questions do you have about these topics? By yourself, or better yet in a group, list what you already know about this case in the ‘What Do I Know?’ column. List questions you would like to learn more about in the ‘What Do I Need to Know?’ column.

What Do I Know What Do I Need to Know?

3. Put a check mark by 1-3 questions or issues in the ‘What Do I Need to Know?’ list that you think are most important to explore.

Phase II: Problem Solving – Investigating the Case

Activity 1Calculate Your Water Footprint!

★ Go to http://apps.facebook.com/watercalculator/

★ Login with the following details:

Email: [email protected]: nieprimary

1. Start the application and compute your own personal water footprint.

________________________ litres per year.

Water consumption breakdown:

2. Compare your water footprint with your classmates. What were some differences you noticed? Discuss your answers with the rest of your group members and summarize what you discussed below.

3. What are some of the activities you perform daily that consume the most water? List down some ways you can conserve water from these activities.

4. List the actions that you have promised to commit to save water.

Activity 2“Conserving Water at Home” Poster

Our school is organizing a “Conserving Water at Home” Poster contest.

Singaporean households consume about 700 million litres of water every day, which is enough to fill 280 Olympic-sized swimming pools or 480 million 1.5 litre bottles! If everyone commits to save just 10 litres per day, the amount of water saved can fill 17 swimming pools every day.1

Design a poster to help your schoolmates be more aware about conserving water at home. The best poster will be mass printed, put up in our classrooms and will also be distributed to our neighbourhood community centre! Research on the different ways to conserve water at homes. Present your methods in a clear and interesting way and help educate your school mates on how to save water at home!

Example:

Specifications

Size: One drawing blockRestrictions: No printing from a computerDeadline: ___________________

You are also required to submit a write up of not more than 1000 words at the back of your poster. Explain why conservation of water is necessary, how your conservation methods work and how easily they can be adopted.

Your teachers will be assessing your investigation and poster based on the attached rubric (ICBL Assessment Rubric).

Phase III: Peer Persuasion – Sharing and communicating findings! !All of you are now judges to determine the winner of the “Conserving Water at Home” Poster Competition.

In your respective groups, select the best poster using the attached rubric. (“Conserving Water at Home Poster” Rubric).

Each group will then send a representative to present their poster for 5 minutes. The rest of the class may pose questions about the poster.

At the end of the presentation, all of you will decide on the winning poster based on your own judging criteria.

What Do I Know What Do I Need to Know?Water saving products help us save water by reducing water consumption and storing excess water.

Water is an essential for us to stay alive.

Singapore has desalination plants and a NEWater plant in order to cope with the increasing consumption of water.

PUB charges us a fee for using water and electricity.

Changing our water consumption habits can help save water.

Only 3% of the water in the world is drinkable.

On average, how much water does each person consume/use in a day?

How much does each household on average pay for water bills?

What is PUB’s job scope?

What are the consequences of not conserving water?

How much do water saving products cost?

How much water can water saving products save?

How many kinds of water saving products are there?

What are some other ways in which we can save water?

Can we save more water by changing our habits as compared to using water saving products?

What are some of the activities in our daily lives, which consume the most water?

3. Put a check mark by 1-3 questions or issues in the ‘What Do I Need to Know?’ list that you think are most important to explore.
