Prayer For the Safety of Soldiers

Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. WE SHARE GOD’S LIFE NOW Over the past few weeks, second readings at Sunday Mass have been taken from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. Paul has been providing an ongoing instruction on what it means to live and share God’s life now. Paul was writing to people who lived in the midst of pagan activity. That is why Paul’s words are still applicable to us. This is not to say that our world is monstrous-ly evil, that nastiness surrounds us, or that everyone is out to get us. That’s not true. What is true, however, is that times are tough. Our society pressures us to look out for ourselves, to take the best advantage we can, often without giving much thought to the other person. Paul also urges us to take the best advantage we can, but with constant regard for the other per-son. And the best advantage we can take is to remember that Christ is with us—is in us—now. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This week we observe another Marian celebration, the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its original date was May 31, when it was instituted by Pius XII in 1954, but it was eventually moved to August 22 so that its close relationship with the Assumption might be made clear. Mary’s queenship is multi-dimensional: she reigns gloriously in heaven as queen and mother; she is the queen who intercedes; she is the sign of the Church in its future glory. Of course, the traditions surrounding the Blessed Mother’s queenship extend much further back than the establishment of this feast. In the eighth century St. John Damascene could write, “When she became Mother of the Creator, she truly became Queen of every creature.” According to Jewish tradition, the mother of the king was accorded a seat of honor at the right of the king. With Jesus’ royal heritage as a descendant and member of the house of David, Mary quite naturally takes her proper place as the queen mother. Pius XII simply recalled these traditions and gave us a day to remind us of how we can direct our prayers to Mary, our Queen. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Disposing of Religious Articles Paul Turner

When religious articles deteriorate to a point when they can no longer be used effectively, they may be disposed of with dignity. Your parish may burn old palm branches to make ashes for Ash Wednesday. But the proper disposal of other religious articles is not so clear.

The Code of Canon Law says that sacred objects desig-nated for divine worship by dedication or blessing are to be treated reverently. They are not to be employed for profane or inappro-priate use (1171). Regarding large buildings, the code says they lose their dedication or blessing if they have been destroyed in large part, or if they have been turned over permanently to profane use (1212).

But the code does not directly answer a very practical question many Catholics have: “What do I do with a broken ro-sary, a tarnished medal, or a deteriorating statue?”

In the past, the Vatican has offered several different solutions. If possible, put the object to some other sacred use. If not, burn it, melt it or bury it. Try to avoid letting the object enter secular or profane use.

If you have old religious articles at home, you may bury them in the ground. When you do, you might read a passage from the bible such as Revelation 21:1-5, which speaks about the pass-ing away of a former world and the coming of something new. Recall the occasions you have used these items. Pray the Lord’s Prayer. Do it in a spirit of thankfulness for all that these objects have meant and out of respect for the sacred realities they have represented.
