and meditation on His Word. Another of our guest speakers was David Pawson, who has been associated with the ICEJ Feast celebrations since the very beginning in 1980. David shared what he believed was a word from the Lord for the ICEJ, based on the passage from Acts 4 quoted above – that the time has come for the ICEJ to embrace another aspect of our calling to “comfort” God’s people through the demonstration of God’s power in ‘signs and wonders’ – for the lame man, normal was over. Once again this year our group was thoroughly blessed by Jesma’s teachings which focussed on Jesus as a Jewish Rabbi doing ‘things’ that were not ‘normal’. On many occasions, by his words and actions, Jesus broke all the traditions of the Jewish religious leaders and elders in order to show what the Kingdom of God is really like – the woman caught in adultery, the woman of Samaria (possibly a prostitute) who had many husbands, the father and the 2 sons in the story of the prodigal son – in all of these instances, Jesus was not constrained by ‘normality’. “Normal” was over! I am confident that for many of us, we have experienced many events in our lives that would indicate that ‘normal’ was over, but in fact it was when Jesus came that ‘Normal’ was really over. May the Lord challenge each one of us to look beyond what the world or tradition is telling us, and to look to Jesus as our example. ICEJ AUSTRALIANovember 2011

“Normal is over” says a T-shirt, and certainly the month of October was anything but ‘normal’ for us, and not just because of our Feast of Tabernacles tour of Israel, and our tours to Berlin and Turkey, but also for the lessons learned during these events.

Just prior to our departure, I received a copy of an article by the Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom, Lord Jonathan Saccs (www.chiefrabbi.org) written for the 10th anniversary of the events of September 11,2001 in the USA, events that changed the world. Our ‘normal’ way of life was over! In the article, the Chief Rabbi suggested the events were “linked to a wider moral malaise”, being “us and our…unsustainable self-indulgence.” These words challenged me at the time, and that challenge was reinforced during our tours.

Berlin was another reminder that ‘normal is over’ as it was for the world’s Jewish population, and for many millions of people impacted by the Holocaust and other aspects of World War II. On the other hand however, out of the graves and ashes of the Holocaust, the nation of Israel was ‘reborn’ – an event that continues to impact world events today. Normal is over!

After Berlin we travelled to Israel for our annual Feast of Tabernacles celebrations. The Feast of Tabernacles, (also known as the Feast of Ingathering) is one of God’s ‘appointed times’ (Leviticus 23) and is a reminder of God’s continued provision, and of His promise to “gather the outcasts of Israel and bring them to their own land” (Deut 30:4). At the Feast celebrations, one of our special guest speakers was Angus Buchan, a potato farmer from South Africa who recounted many miraculous events from his life, which demonstrated the power of God to intervene on behalf of his people – especially those who are prepared to spend time with Him in prayer

Abraham is known in Jewish tradition, as a follower or disciple of the Almighty, and also as one who was a great

discipler of others. His story begins with the instruction in Hebrew, “Lech Lecha” – “Go forth from your native land and from your father’s house to the land I will show you.”[Genesis 12:1] Jesus gave to his disciples a similar instruction in Matthew 28, “Go therefore and make people from all nations into disciples...” God is a sending God and we need to be conscious of being sent as His disciples every day, in every circumstance in which we find ourselves. Each day presents opportunities to be involved in tikun ha olam, working with God to restore His broken world.

This instruction and Abraham’s obedient response, resulted in him and Sarah and their household embarking on a great adventure with God. They didn’t know where they were going or what they would do when they arrived, but God promised blessing and increase as they stepped out in obedience to His call. OBEDIENCE leading to BLESSING and INCREASE are the marks of a life of discipleship.

Abraham became the Father of all who believe – the ultimate pattern, apart from Jesus himself, of how we are called to live as disciples [Hebrews 11:8=11]. Abraham’s leap of faith involved risk, courage, vision, sacrifice and faithfulness. God is still looking for people who will exercise those qualities in partnering with Him in His great redemptive purposes, living their lives with kavannah, God focussed intent.

Many people are crippled by fear of the unknown, fear of failure and fear of what people think. It has rightly been said that to try something is to risk failure, but if you never try, you have failed already. Faith in God is the opposite of fear, which cripples us and hinders our effectiveness. Fear of God alone keeps us focussed on obeying His will and leading. This often means choosing to ignore negativity and criticism and push through, despite opposition. In the book “Faith of Leap,” Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch write, “God has designed us as decision makers in His very image, as agents of the Kingdom, not only to partake in history, but to prayerfully shape and direct it in His Name, a true act of worship. And the part we have to play will depend largely on a clear sense of our mission, on the level of intentionality in what we do, and on the fortitude and integrity with which we do it.”

All of us need to be continually fired, or refired, with a holy discontent with things as they are, and a passion to work to see God’s Kingdom impact our world.

The Jewish people are about to begin their yearly Torah reading cycle again, and they will be studying the life of Abraham in the book of Genesis. Eleven chapters are given over to telling the story of this remarkable man and

I encourage you to take time to study his life. The chapters reveal him as a man whose life was characterised by obedience, faith, faithfulness, integrity and commitment to God’s promises over a long period of time. He had a holy discontent with things as they were and continued to seek God for the fulfilment of His promises. [Genesis 13; 15]

He was a man of vision, able to see the big picture and work towards its fulfilment and so God promised that he would be the father, not only of the Jewish people, but of the community of faith that would spring up throughout the nations as a result of his obedience [Genesis 17:5; Isaiah 49:6].

He was focussed on God and His purposes, rather than on himself, and was willing to live a life of sacrifice and surrender to God’s purposes [Genesis 22; Romans 4:21; Hebrews 11:17-19]. His willingness to sacrifice even his beloved Isaac led to more promises of fruitfulness and increase on God’s part. In Genesis 23, as he farewells Sarah, we see his character revealed even through suffering and loss.

We, his spiritual descendants, have much to learn from the life of this great man of faith. The church Jesus birthed was never meant to be a safe, secure exclusive club with a focus on the comfort of its members. We are meant to be a revolutionary force in the world, bringing change and blessing one life at a time, like our Rabbi and Saviour Jesus. The early Christians were called “The Way”, a term that speaks of being on the move, not static. We are a people on a journey, advancing the Kingdom of God. Like Abraham, we need to see ourselves as tent dwellers, ready to move when God calls us, unencumbered by the things of this world [Hebrews 11:8-11].

They were also called Notzrim, branches, a term which speaks of growth and spreading out from the root and trunk, places of strength, bringing increase and fruitfulness.

Discipleship is a journey. It has a starting point, salvation, but the end of the journey is found in God’s great redemptive purposes. Like Abraham, we have a part to play. He would have achieved little and missed out on the great adventure of journeying with God, if he had chosen to stay in his comfortable, secure surroundings in Ur. We also, will not achieve all God has purposed for our lives unless we are willing to travel light, get rid of excess baggage from our lives, and to move out with faith, courage and kavannah, God focussed intent.
