ISLAMIC COLLEGE OF MELBOURNE TERM 3 ISSUE 5 31.7.2018 PRINCIPALS MESSAGE Assalamualaikum Warah- matullah Wabarakatuh Dear Parents and students, Mashallah what a busy last week of Term 2 we had. With the end of Ramadan and a number of other events happening at the college, we ask Allah (SWT) to accept our dua’s and always guide us on the right path insha’Allah. On the last week of Term 2, we celebrated Literacy/Nu- meracy Week and had the pleasure of seeing all the Primary students and staff dressed up in costumes of their favourite book charac- ter. Each year level then paraded their costumes during the day to show their friends and other students their efforts. This event was not over- shadowed by the last day of term, in which all students and staff at ICOM celebrated the annual Eid Festival. On the topic of sports, this term the Primary students will be partic- ipating in the gymnastics program. This is a 9-week program which encourages students to gain gymnastic skills, develop overall fitness, core strength, flexibility and enhance students’ spatial awareness. As the college continues to grow so to does the interest in the college. We have seen a huge number of potential enrolments this year and with testing happening in August we are humbled to continue to see this demand. Unfortunately, due to a number of reasons, including a limited number of spaces available at the college we are unable to accommodate all enrolment requests. We continue to look forward to an amazing term and would like to thank you for trusting the college with your children’s education. Dr Abdul M. Kamareddine College Principal With more rides and other activities on the day, there were smiles and painted faces all over the college. This is surely a sign that the students really enjoyed themselves. At 3.30pm, the parents were then also welcomed to join the festivi- ties where they too enjoyed the food stalls and atmosphere at the college. Please ensure you have a look at the photos from both events in this issue. Another major event I would like to mention is the Annual Rama- dan Quran Competition. This annual event continues to amaze me with the number of students participating and showing their great enthusiasm in the not only memorising the Holy Quran but also in ensuring they follow the Tajweed rules, Makhraj and apply- ing the Art of Reciting each verse. The finals were held in the second last week of term. The winners will be announced, and they will receive their prizes for their great effort insha’Allah. As Term 2 concluded, we have the number of events in Term 3. On the first day of Term 3, boys in Year 5 & 6 participated in the Bachar Houli Cup. As no surprise, our students competed admirably and will continue to the finals later in Term 3, this year. The college continues to support the participation of students in a number of interschool sports and this term we have so far seen students com- pete in soccer, AFL, table tennis and volleyball. Parents are reminded that all school gates will be opened at 8.20am every morning and students should be at school for morning assem-bly at 8.35am. Bachar Houli Cup

A great start to the Bachar Houli Cup Competition for 2018!

Ms. Gilda IncigneriHealth & Physical Education Co-ordinator

On the last week of Term Two, secondary students from the Islamic College of Melbourne were treated to various engaging activities to mark Literacy and History week. A photo booth allowed students to immerse themselves in famous historical sites but also allowed students to connect their learning from the classroom and recreate scenes from History.

Students were given the opportunity to take photos in front of the most famous landmarks in the world including the Taj Mahal, Hagia Sophia and the Pyra-mids of Giza. Overall, the experience was tremendous for students and teachers alike!

On Tuesday 17 July ICOM's Year 5/6 boys Football team competed in the Bachar Houli Cup, with a number of Islamic Schools from around Melbourne.Whilst the conditions were very windy, our boys were successful in cementing a spot in the Grand Final, and were announced the overall winners for the day. The grand nal will take place in few weeks’ time.

A special mention goes to our Captain for the day Mah-moud Chehade, Sharif Hika, Khalid El Souki and Youse Bey, who demonstrated fantastic skills throughout the day!

Hajj Week Week 5 of Term 3 (13 to 17 of August) will be the Hajj Week at ICOM. This is another exciting week in the ICOM Calendar. The Islamic Studies Department has been planning a number of activities this year to celebrate Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha. Hajj and its values will be incorporated in teaching across the curriculum. There will be short talks and Nasheed at morning assembly and after Dhuhr prayers delivered by students. Daily quizzes will also be conducted throughout the week.

Among the activities, the outstanding Hajj incursion Students of primary will experience the Hajj atmo-sphere by performing Tawa, Sa’I, Jamarath and other rituals of Hajj around the model Ka’ba built for demon-stration insha Allah.

The Annual Quran Competition held so much excitement and energy from Foundation to Year 12. Each year level had a designated Surah that students had to memorise. By the end of Term 2, all students were short listed, and they were ready for the nal round. We couldn’t even continue testing as everyone was ready and the teachers went through the ne details within their classes.Four students were short listed from every class. Many participated, however, not everyone qualied for the nals. As we told the students, they are all winners, however, we’ve got to choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd! We will leave the announcement of the winners to Week 4 of Term 3 and we will publicise their names in the next newsletter Insha’Allah. What a great competition! The images below summarise “it” ALL!

25 July, 2018, my mum, my sister and I were late to the biggest day of my life, the Plain English Speaking Award competition seminals. We quite literally speed walked for our lives to meet Mr Haroun at the rendezvous point where he audibly breathed a sigh of relief. We then ran to 2 Treasury Place and took our seats. I, at this point was feeling extremely awkward, to come late to such a prestigious event. Throughout the entire competition I was so nervous that I skipped the delicious buet served mid-way, as the thought of a cream lled scone would all come back up. Long story short I didn’t win but I still had fun and learned loads :)

Public Speaking Excursion

Student Wellbeing PresentationThe last day of school and we have to sit in the gym for 3 periods. What are we sitting here for? Why did I even come today?” These where the rst thoughts that came into my head in the morning as I was still wiping away the sleep from my eyes. What I didn’t realise was that this was a good opportunity for me and my peers to have our voices heard on a topic that was and will aect us into our futures, Racism. The opportunity to actually have a conversation about this real topic and suggest ways as a school and a community to tackle it was a little daunting at rst but was worth it. Like Margaret Heernan once said “For good ideas and true innovation, you need human interaction, conict, argument, debate”. This was a truly one school day I am glad I didn’t miss.Marwo Ibrahim Year 11

I met many other students from other schools and was happy to hear two speeches about topics I’m passionate about; “The Phase and how young boys need to be guided”, by Samuel Rouch and domestic violence and how it’s an issue for men more than women and we should make sure our sisters are protected. I was fond of the extraordinary talent , it was inspirational.

Eid Festival

“I had so, so, so, so, much fun with my friends and rides were my most favorite. Thank you Dr. Abdul for the Eid Festival, you made my day. ”

One of my favorite things from Eid day was the cool rides. Another is when I got some delicious, yummy ice cream, I nearly exploded from how good it was.
