Painting/Praying with the Icon of St. Francis of Assisi
Holy images express things in themselves
invisible and render them present, visible,
and active. An icon...does not exist simply to
direct our imagination during prayers. It is a
material center in which there reposes an
energy, a divine force, which unites itself to
human art. - Orthodox theologian Vladimir Lossky
Paint (or “write”) your own icon of St. Francis of Assisi with step-by-step group and individual instruction. As you spend the retreat week creating and reflecting on Francis’ icon and his writings and prayers, you will get to know his life and times, learning why, among all the world religions, he is one of the most revered humans to have lived. Iconographer Drazen Dupor will present some of the history of iconography and lead us through the process of creating our own icon. Pat Shutts will facilitate morning and evening prayer and reflection times..
Drazen Dupor, a Yugoslavian artist and iconographer, studied the art of icon painting in Thessalonica, Greece, at the K.N. Georgiadis
School of Art. Over the last twenty years, Drazen has been creating works in his own Art Studios in Tessalonica and since 2003, in Madison, Wisconsin.
Pat Shutts is retreat leader and spiritual guide. With training in Pastoral Studies, spiritual guidance, and bereavement ministry, Pat brings her gift of compassionate listening to companion seekers. Pat is a lay covenant companion with the Wheaton Franciscans and a member of the Sophia Zen Sangha. Pat loves art, play and prayer.

No less than the written word, an icon is an instrument for the transmission of Christian tradition and faith. Through sacred imagery, the Holy Spirit speaks to us, revealing truths
that may not be evident to those using only the tools of reason.
